Peer reviewe

Void-Assisted Ion-Paired Proton Transfer at Water-Ionic Liquid Interfaces.

At the water-trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([P14,6,6,6 ][FAP]) ionic liquid interface, the unusual electrochemical transfer behavior of protons (H(+) ) and deuterium ions (D(+) ) was identified. Alkali metal cations (such as Li(+) , Na(+) , K(+) ) did not undergo this transfer. H(+) /D(+) transfers were assisted by the hydrophobic counter anion of the ionic liquid, [FAP](-) , resulting in the formation of a mixed capacitive layer from the filling of the latent voids within the anisotropic ionic liquid structure. This phenomenon could impact areas such as proton-coupled electron transfers, fuel cells, and hydrogen storage where ionic liquids are used as aprotic solvents

Design of price incentives for adjunct policy goals in formula funding for hospitals and health services

    Get PDF
Background. Hospital policy involves multiple objectives: efficiency of service delivery, pursuit of high quality care, promoting access. Funding policy based on hospital casemix has traditionally been considered to be only about promoting efficiency. Discussion. Formula-based funding policy can be (and has been) used to pursue a range of policy objectives, not only efficiency. These are termed 'adjunct' goals. Strategies to incorporate adjunct goals into funding design must, implicitly or explicitly, address key decision choices outlined in this paper. Summary. Policy must be clear and explicit about the behaviour to be rewarded; incentives must be designed so that all facilities with an opportunity to improve have an opportunity to benefit; the reward structure is stable and meaningful; and the funder monitors performance and gaming

Short Telomeres Compromise β-Cell Signaling and Survival

The genetic factors that underlie the increasing incidence of diabetes with age are poorly understood. We examined whether telomere length, which is inherited and known to shorten with age, plays a role in the age-dependent increased incidence of diabetes. We show that in mice with short telomeres, insulin secretion is impaired and leads to glucose intolerance despite the presence of an intact β-cell mass. In ex vivo studies, short telomeres induced cell-autonomous defects in β-cells including reduced mitochondrial membrane hyperpolarization and Ca2+ influx which limited insulin release. To examine the mechanism, we looked for evidence of apoptosis but found no baseline increase in β-cells with short telomeres. However, there was evidence of all the hallmarks of senescence including slower proliferation of β-cells and accumulation of p16INK4a. Specifically, we identified gene expression changes in pathways which are essential for Ca2+-mediated exocytosis. We also show that telomere length is additive to the damaging effect of endoplasmic reticulum stress which occurs in the late stages of type 2 diabetes. This additive effect manifests as more severe hyperglycemia in Akita mice with short telomeres which had a profound loss of β-cell mass and increased β-cell apoptosis. Our data indicate that short telomeres can affect β-cell metabolism even in the presence of intact β-cell number, thus identifying a novel mechanism of telomere-mediated disease. They implicate telomere length as a determinant of β-cell function and diabetes pathogenesis

This paper presents the numerical evaluation of ground (proximity) effects on the basic aerodynamic characteristics of a specifically designed airplane model. The ground effects were investigated in relation to the angle of attack and flight altitude. The results were referenced to the characteristics of an object in motion unaffected by ground effects.W pracy przedstawiono badania numeryczne wpływu efektu bliskości ziemi na podstawowe charakterystyki aerodynamiczne specjalnie do tego celu zaprojektowanej bryły samolotu. Zbadano wpływ bliskości ziemi w zależności od kąta natarcia oraz w zależności od wysokości lotu. Wyniki odniesiono do charakterystyk obiektu poruszającego się bez efektu bliskości ziemi

This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation into the effect of blade trailing-edge thickness and shape on the performance of a rotor ring model of axial fan. The numerical simulations carried out under this investigation provided the performance characteristics of efficiency, working medium power, and total pressure increase in the function of the volumetric flow rate of the rotor ring. The investigated blade trailing-edge thickness values were 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm. The models for the simulation series were developed with rounded and sharp blade trailing edges, for all thickness values thereof. The rounded trailing blade edges were modelled in the form of an arc over which the conditions of tangency with the upper and lower contours of the airfoil were imposed. The blades of the modelled blade fan were designed with the NACA 65-810 airfoil. To verify the applied turbulence model and mesh settings, experimental tests of the model rotor ring were performed on an axial fan test bed. The obtained experimental data was compared with numerical results. The results showed a significant impact of the thickness and shape of the blade trailing edge on the performance characteristics of axial fans.W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki numerycznego badania wpływu grubości i kształtu krawędzi spływu łopatki wirnikowej na charakterystyki pracy modelowego wieńca wirnikowego wentylatora osiowego. W toku symulacji numerycznych uzyskiwano charakterystykę sprawności, mocy oraz przyrostu ciśnienia całkowitego w funkcji objętościowego natężenia przepływu przez wieniec wirnikowy. Przyjęte do analizy grubości krawędzi spływu łopatki wynosiły 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm. Modele do serii symulacji numerycznych wykonano dla zaokrąglonych i niezaokrąglonych krawędzi spływu o podanych wyżej grubościach. Zaokrąglone krawędzie spływu odwzorowywano w postaci łuku, na który narzucono warunki styczności do górnego i dolnego obrysu profilu definiującego kształt łopatki. Łopatki modelowego wieńca wirnikowego zbudowano w oparciu o profil NACA 65-810. Na potrzeby sprawdzenia poprawności przyjętego modelu turbulencji oraz ustawień siatki przeprowadzono badania doświadczalne modelowego wieńca wirnikowego na stanowisku do badań wentylatorów osiowych. Uzyskane dane eksperymentalne zestawiono z wynikami numerycznymi. Przedstawione wyniki wykazały istotny wpływ grubości i kształtu krawędzi spływu łopatki wirnikowej na charakterystyki pracy wentylatora osiowego

Evidence That the Reactivity of the Martian Soil Is Due to Superoxide Ions

    No full text
The Viking Landers were unable to detect evidence of life on Mars but, instead, found a chemically reactive soil capable of decomposing organic molecules. This reactivity was attributed to the presence of one or more as-yet-unidentified inorganic superoxides or peroxides in the martian soil. Using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that superoxide radical ions (O_(2)–) form directly on Mars-analog mineral surfaces exposed to ultraviolet radiation under a simulated martian atmosphere. These oxygen radicals can explain the reactive nature of the soil and the apparent absence of organic material at the martian surface
