    Specific heat and non-linear susceptibility in spin glasses with random fields

    We study magnetic properties of spin glass SG systems under a random field (RF), beased on the suggestion that RFs can be induced by a weak transverse field in the compound LiHox_xY1x_{1-x}F4_4. We consider a cluster spin model that allows long-range disordered interactions among clusters and short-range interactions inside the clusters, besides a local RF for each spin following a Gaussian distribution with standard deviation Δ\Delta. We adopt the one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) approach to get an exactly solvable single-cluster problem. We discuss the behavior of order parameters, specific heat CmC_{m}, nonlinear susceptibility χ3\chi_3 and phase diagrams for different disorder configurations. In the absence of RF, the χ3\chi_3 exhibits a divergence at TfT_f, while the CmC_{m} shows a broad maximum at a temperature TT^{**} around 30%\% above TfT_f, as expected for conventional SG systems. The presence of RF changes this scenario. The CmC_{m} still shows the maximum at TT^{**} that is weakly dependent on Δ\Delta. However, the TfT_f is displaced to lower temperatures, enhancing considerable the ration T/TfT^{**}/T_f. Furthermore, the divergence in χ3\chi_3 is replaced by a rounded maximum at a temperature TT^{*}, which becomes increasingly higher than TfT_f as Δ\Delta enhances. As a consequence, the paramagnetic phase is unfolded in three regions: (i) a conventional paramagnetism (T>TT>T^{**}; (ii) a region with formation of short-range order with frozen spins (T<T<TT^{*}<T<T^{**}); (iii) a region with slow growth of free-energy barriers slowing down the spin dynamics before the SG transition (Tf<T<TT_f<T<T^{*}) suggesting an intermediate Griffiths phase before the SG state. Our results reproduce qualitatively some findings of LiHox_xY1x_{1-x}F4_4 as the rounded maximum of χ3\chi_3 behavior triggered by RF.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    En 2010 se comenzó a diseñar material interactivo, con el apoyo del software libre GeoGebra, para poner a disposición de los estudiantes de Análisis Matemático I de la Facultad Regional San Nicolás (FRSN) de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. En años siguientes se evaluó la opinión de los alumnos sobre este tipo de recursos, obteniendo resultados alentadores. También se observó una mejora en el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes. En este trabajo se presentan algunos resultados de distintas experiencias de uso y se muestra el Laboratorio Virtual de Análisis Matemático I que se presenta en el año académico 2016

    Understanding lactatemia in human sepsis potential impact for early management

    Rationale: Hyperlactatemia in sepsis may derive from a prevalent impairment of oxygen supply/demand and/or oxygen use. Discriminating between these two mechanisms may be relevant for the early fluid resuscitation strategy. Objectives: To understand the relationship among central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2), lactate, and base excess to better determine the origin of lactate. Methods: This was a post hoc analysis of baseline variables of 1,741 patients with sepsis enrolled in the multicenter trial ALBIOS (Albumin ItalianOutcome Sepsis). Variableswere analyzed as a function of sextiles of lactate concentration and sextiles of ScvO2.Wedefined the "alactic base excess," as the sum of lactate and standard base excess. Measurements and Main Results: Organ dysfunction severity scores, physiologic variables of hepatic, metabolic, cardiac, and renal function, and 90-day mortality were measured. ScvO2 was lower than 70% only in 35% of patients. Mortality, organ dysfunction scores, and lactate were highest in the first and sixth sextiles of ScvO2. Although lactate level related strongly to mortality, it was associated with acidemia only when kidney function was impaired (creatinine &gt;2 mg/dl), as rapidly detected by a negative alactic base excess. In contrast, positive values of alactic base excess were associated with a relative reduction of fluid balance. Conclusions: Hyperlactatemia is powerfully correlated with severity of sepsis and, in established sepsis, is caused more frequently by impaired tissue oxygen use, rather than by impaired oxygen transport. Concomitant acidemia was only observed in the presence of renal dysfunction, as rapidly detected by alactic base excess. The current strategy of fluid resuscitation could be modified according to the origin of excess lactate

    Targeted Sequencing of Candidate Regions Associated with Sagittal and Metopic Nonsyndromic Craniosynostosis

    Craniosynostosis (CS) is a major birth defect in which one or more skull sutures fuse prematurely. We previously performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for sagittal nonsyndromic CS (sNCS), identifying associations downstream from BMP2 on 20p12.3 and intronic to BBS9 on 7p14.3; analyses of imputed variants in DLG1 on 3q29 were also genome-wide significant. We followed this work with a GWAS for metopic non-syndromic NCS (mNCS), discovering a significant association intronic to BMP7 on 20q13.31. In the current study, we sequenced the associated regions on 3q29, 7p14.3, and 20p12.3, including two candidate genes (BMP2 and BMPER) near some of these regions in 83 sNCS child-parent trios, and sequenced regions on 7p14.3 and 20q13.2-q13.32 in 80 mNCS child-parent trios. These child-parent trios were selected from the original GWAS co-horts if the probands carried at least one copy of the top associated GWAS variant (rs1884302 C allele for sNCS; rs6127972 T allele for mNCS). Many of the variants sequenced in these targeted regions are strongly predicted to be within binding sites for transcription factors involved in crani-ofacial development or bone morphogenesis. Variants enriched in more than one trio and predicted to be damaging to gene function are prioritized for functional studies

    Instability of short arm of acrocentric chromosomes : Lesson from non-acrocentric satellited chromosomes. Report of 24 unrelated cases

    Satellited non-acrocentric autosomal chromosomes (ps-qs-chromosomes) are the result of an interchange between sub- or telomeric regions of autosomes and the p arm of acrocentrics. The sequence homology at the rearrangement breakpoints appears to be, among others, the most frequent mechanism generating these variant chromosomes. The unbalanced carriers of this type of translocation may or may not display phenotypic abnormalities. With the aim to understand the causative mechanism, we revised all the ps-qs-chromosomes identified in five medical genetics laboratories, which used the same procedures for karyotype analysis, reporting 24 unrelated cases involving eight chromosomes. In conclusion, we observed three different scenarios: true translocation, benign variant and complex rearrangement. The detection of translocation partners is essential to evaluate possible euchromatic unbalances and to infer their effect on phenotype. Moreover, we emphasize the importance to perform both, molecular and conventional cytogenetics methods, to better understand the behavior of our genome

    Mechanisms of oxygenation responses to proning and recruitment in COVID-19 pneumonia

    Purpose: This study aimed at investigating the mechanisms underlying the oxygenation response to proning and recruitment maneuvers in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Methods: Twenty-five patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, at variable times&nbsp;since admission (from 1 to 3&nbsp;weeks), underwent computed tomography (CT) lung scans, gas-exchange and lung-mechanics measurement in supine and prone positions at 5 cmH2O and during recruiting maneuver (supine, 35 cmH2O). Within the non-aerated tissue, we differentiated the atelectatic and consolidated tissue (recruitable and non-recruitable at 35 cmH2O of airway pressure). Positive/negative response to proning/recruitment was defined as increase/decrease of PaO2/FiO2. Apparent perfusion ratio was computed as venous admixture/non aerated tissue fraction. Results: The average values of venous admixture and PaO2/FiO2 ratio were similar in supine-5 and prone-5. However, the PaO2/FiO2 changes (increasing in 65% of the patients and decreasing in 35%, from supine to prone) correlated with the balance between resolution of dorsal atelectasis and formation of ventral atelectasis (p = 0.002). Dorsal consolidated tissue determined this balance, being inversely related with dorsal recruitment (p = 0.012). From supine-5 to supine-35, the apparent perfusion ratio increased from 1.38 ± 0.71 to 2.15 ± 1.15 (p = 0.004) while PaO2/FiO2 ratio increased in 52% and decreased in 48% of patients. Non-responders had consolidated tissue fraction of 0.27 ± 0.1 vs. 0.18 ± 0.1 in the responding cohort (p = 0.04). Consolidated tissue, PaCO2 and respiratory system elastance were higher in patients assessed late (all p &lt; 0.05), suggesting, all together, “fibrotic-like” changes of the lung over time. Conclusion: The amount of consolidated tissue was higher in patients assessed during the third week and determined the oxygenation responses following pronation and recruitment maneuvers
