Energy saving market for mobile operators
Ensuring seamless coverage accounts for the lion's share of the energy
consumed in a mobile network. Overlapping coverage of three to five mobile
network operators (MNOs) results in enormous amount of energy waste which is
avoidable. The traffic demands of the mobile networks vary significantly
throughout the day. As the offered load for all networks are not same at a
given time and the differences in energy consumption at different loads are
significant, multi-MNO capacity/coverage sharing can dramatically reduce energy
consumption of mobile networks and provide the MNOs a cost effective means to
cope with the exponential growth of traffic. In this paper, we propose an
energy saving market for a multi-MNO network scenario. As the competing MNOs
are not comfortable with information sharing, we propose a double auction
clearinghouse market mechanism where MNOs sell and buy capacity in order to
minimize energy consumption. In our setting, each MNO proposes its bids and
asks simultaneously for buying and selling multi-unit capacities respectively
to an independent auctioneer, i.e., clearinghouse and ends up either as a buyer
or as a seller in each round. We show that the mechanism allows the MNOs to
save significant percentage of energy cost throughout a wide range of network
load. Different than other energy saving features such as cell sleep or antenna
muting which can not be enabled at heavy traffic load, dynamic capacity sharing
allows MNOs to handle traffic bursts with energy saving opportunity.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to be published in ICC 2015 workshop on Next

Modeling charge-imbalanced NaNbO3/SrTiO3 superlattices: Lattice relaxation and metallicity
The electronic and structural properties of different charge-imbalanced perovskite oxide NaNbO3/SrTiO3 superlattices are investigated with density-functional theory (local density approximation and local spin density approximation+U) methods. Metallic or insulating behavior of such a superlattice depends on the types of interfaces present: nonstoichiometric composition of a superlattice introduces holes to O p orbitals or extra electrons to Nb/Ti d orbitals. Lattice parameters, superlattice volume, and the extent of conduction electron or hole states are found to depend on interface type. The extent of the metallic state may also depend on the NaNbO3/SrTiO3 ratio. Octahedral rotations and other low-symmetry phases increase the gap between p and d orbitals but do not affect metallicity. Adding a Hubbard U to account for possible electronic correlations does not affect electron localization. Within LSDA+U, the delocalized holes align ferromagnetically.Peer reviewe
Computational study of (111) epitaxially strained ferroelectric perovskites BaTiO3 and PbTiO3
The phase transition behavior of PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 under (111) epitaxial strain is investigated using density-functional theory calculations. From tensile strains of +0.015 to compressive strains of −0.015, PbTiO3 undergoes phase transitions from C2 through two Cm phases and then to R3m. The total polarization is found to be almost independent of strain. For the same range of strains BaTiO3 undergoes phase transitions from a single Cm phase, through R3m and then to R3¯m. In this case the application of compressive strain inhibits and then completely suppresses the polarization on transition to the nonpolar R3¯m phase.Peer reviewe
Image augmentation with conformal mappings for a convolutional neural network
For augmentation of the square-shaped image data of a convolutional neural
network (CNN), we introduce a new method, in which the original images are
mapped onto a disk with a conformal mapping, rotated around the center of this
disk and mapped under such a M\"obius transformation that preserves the disk,
and then mapped back onto their original square shape. This process does not
result the loss of information caused by removing areas from near the edges of
the original images unlike the typical transformations used in the data
augmentation for a CNN. We offer here the formulas of all the mappings needed
together with detailed instructions how to write a code for transforming the
images. The new method is also tested with simulated data and, according the
results, using this method to augment the training data of 10 images into 40
images decreases the amount of the error in the predictions by a CNN for a test
set of 160 images in a statistically significant way (p-value=0.0360).Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Ankylosis of the cervical spine increases the incidence of blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) in CTA screening after blunt trauma
Purpose To examine the incidence, location, and grade of blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI), as well as associated strokes in patients with ankylosis of the cervical spine, imaged with CT angiography (CTA) after blunt trauma. The related etiologies of ankylosis had an additional focus. Materials and methods Altogether of 5867 CTAs of the craniocervical arteries imaged after blunt trauma between October 2011 and March 2020 were manually reviewed for a threshold value of ankylosis of at least three consecutive cervical vertebrae. BCVI was the primary outcome and associated stroke as the secondary outcome. Variables were craniofacial and cervical spine fractures, etiology and levels of ankylosis, traumatic brain injury, spinal hematoma, spinal cord injury, and spinal cord impingement, for which correlations with BCVI were examined. Results Of the 153 patients with ankylosis and blunt trauma of the cervical spine, 29 had a total of 36 BCVIs, of whom two had anterior and 4 posterior circulation strokes. Most of the BCVIs (n = 32) were in the vertebral arteries. Injuries were graded according to the Biffl scale: 17 grade II, 4 grade III, 14 grade IV, and 1 grade V. A ground-level fall was the most common trauma mechanism. Cervical spine fracture was the only statistically significant predictor for BCVI (OR 7.44). Degenerative spondylosis was the most prevalent etiology for ankylosis. Conclusion Ankylosis of the cervical spine increases the incidence of BCVI up to sevenfold compared to general blunt trauma populations, affecting especially the vertebral arteries.Peer reviewe
Targeted exercise against osteoporosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis for optimising bone strength throughout life
Background.
Exercise is widely recommended to reduce osteoporosis, falls and related fragility fractures, but its effect on whole bone strength has remained inconclusive. The primary purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of long-term supervised exercise (≥6 months) on estimates of lower-extremity bone strength from childhood to older age.
Methods.
We searched four databases (PubMed, Sport Discus, Physical Education Index, and Embase) up to October 2009 and included 10 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the effects of exercise training on whole bone strength. We analysed the results by age groups (childhood, adolescence, and young and older adulthood) and compared the changes to habitually active or sedentary controls. To calculate standardized mean differences (SMD; effect size), we used the follow-up values of bone strength measures adjusted for baseline bone values. An inverse variance-weighted random-effects model was used to pool the results across studies.
Results.
Our quality analysis revealed that exercise regimens were heterogeneous; some trials were short in duration and small in sample size, and the weekly training doses varied considerably between trials. We found a small and significant exercise effect among pre- and early pubertal boys [SMD, effect size, 0.17 (95% CI, 0.02-0.32)], but not among pubertal girls [-0.01 (-0.18 to 0.17)], adolescent boys [0.10 (-0.75 to 0.95)], adolescent girls [0.21 (-0.53 to 0.97)], premenopausal women [0.00 (-0.43 to 0.44)] or postmenopausal women [0.00 (-0.15 to 0.15)]. Evidence based on per-protocol analyses of individual trials in children and adolescents indicated that programmes incorporating regular weight-bearing exercise can result in 1% to8% improvements in bone strength at the loaded skeletal sites. In premenopausal women with high exercise compliance, improvements ranging from 0.5% to 2.5% have been reported.
Conclusions.
The findings from our meta-analysis of RCTs indicate that exercise can significantly enhance bone strength at loaded sites in children but not in adults. Since few RCTs were conducted to investigate exercise effects on bone strength, there is still a need for further well-designed, long-term RCTs with adequate sample sizes to quantify the effects of exercise on whole bone strength and its structural determinants throughout life.peerReviewe
VR safety training for Fab Lab
Abstract. With advancements in both hardware and software, virtual reality has become more common in homes, offices and other workplaces. As with all new technologies, it is important to find uses that are best suited for VR. Education and training are the most common professional applications for VR. In this thesis we describe ways that VR has been utilized by others, and introduce an application developed by us to display the possibilities brought by VR.
We developed an application to teach safe behaviour when using a laser cutter, to aid in the education of new users of a Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab). The application was built using Unity3D game engine for the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset, and was tested in an evaluation by staff at the University of Oulu Fab Lab. There were four test users in total, all of them with limited experience using VR. A member of our team was there to guide them in the use of the application. After the evaluation was complete, the participants answered a questionnaire containing multiple-choice and open questions.
From the evaluation with the staff and questionnaire responses, it was concluded that the application was a mixed success with positive feedback but caused VR sickness in many. In addition, the evaluation resulted in suggestions for improvements from the users. We had planned to add other features, which were not possible to include due to the tight schedule. The application showed a lot of potential for future improvement such as including other machinery and features located in the Fab Lab such as 3D Printers and vinyl cutters for safety training.VR turvallisuuskoulutus Fab Lab-ympäristöön.
Kehitimme sovelluksen opettaaksemme turvallisia toimintatapoja laserleikkuria käytettäessä, helpottaaksemme uusien Fabrication Laboratoryn(Fab Lab) käyttäjiä.
Liikkujaidentiteetin kehittäminen positiivisen pedagogiikan avulla alkuopetuksen liikunnanopetuksessa
Tiivistelmä. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvittää, voiko oppilaan liikkujaidentiteettiä kehittää positiivisen pedagogiikan avulla alkuopetuksen liikunnan oppiaineessa. Tutkielmassa käsitellään TARGET-mallin elementtien käyttöä positiivisen pedagogiikan tukena myönteisen motivaatioilmaston luomisessa liikunnan oppitunneilla. Tutkimuskysymyksenä oli, miten positiivisen pedagogiikan ja TARGET-mallin elementtien hyödyntämisellä voidaan vaikuttaa yksilön liikkujaidentiteetin kehittymiseen alkuopetuksen liikunnanopetuksessa.
Liikunnallisen elämäntavan sisäistäminen on ajankohtainen aihe, koska lasten fyysinen aktiivisuus on vähentynyt. Perusta liikunnalliselle elämäntavalle luodaan varhain lapsena. Alkuopetuksen aikana oppilas kokee ensimmäiset kokemuksensa koululiikunnasta ja suhtautuminen liikuntaa kohtaan määräytyy kokemusmaailman pohjalta. Oppilaan liikkujaidentiteetti alkaa rakentumaan jo ensimmäisten kouluvuosien aikana. Opettajan tekemillä pedagogisilla ratkaisuilla on suuri merkitys oppilaan käsitykseen itsestään liikkujana. Opettaja voi tukea oppilaan liikkujaidentiteetin kehittymistä positiivisen pedagogiikan keinojen avulla.
Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että positiivisen pedagogiikan ja TARGET-mallin elementtien hyödyntämisellä osana alkuopetuksen liikunnanopetusta, voidaan vaikuttaa positiivisesti oppilaan liikkujaidentiteetin kehittymiseen. Tutkielman pohjalta voidaan todeta positiivisen pedagogiikan vaikuttavan positiivisesti niin luokan motivaatioilmaston kehittymiseen kuin yksittäisen oppilaan myönteisten kokemusten saantiin liikunnanopetuksessa
”Pahoinvoinnin poistaminen ei takaa hyvinvoinnin syntyä”:opettaja positiivisen pedagogiikan harjoittajana
Tiivistelmä. Tutkimuksen aiheena on opettajan käyttämä positiivinen pedagogiikka ensimmäisen vuosiluokan syksyllä. Positiivinen pedagogiikka sisältää ajatuksen välittävästä vuorovaikutuksesta, innostavan ilmapiirin luomisesta, oppilaan autonomian tukemisesta sekä luonteenvahvuuksien ja tunnekasvatuksen huomioimisesta osana opetusta. Sillä tavoitellaan oppilaan kokonaisvaltaista hyvinvointia. Positiivinen pedagogiikka on rantautunut Suomeen 2010-luvun puolivälissä, joten sen tutkiminen käytännön opettajan työssä on ajankohtaista.
Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin Pohjois-Pohjanmaalaisella alakoululla syksyllä 2020. Aineisto koostui etnografiselle tutkimukselle tyypillisistä aineistonkeruumenetelmistä: havainnoinnista ja haastattelusta. Havainnointi kohdistui kahteen yhteisopettajuutta toteuttavaan ensimmäisen vuosiluokan opettajaan, joille toteutettiin yksilölliset teemahaastattelut. Tutkimuskysymys oli: “Miten positiivinen pedagogiikka näyttäytyy opettajan toiminnassa alakoulun ensimmäisellä vuosiluokalla?”
Aineiston analyysissä hyödynnettiin teoriaohjaavaa sisällönanalyysiä. Tutkimustulokset jakautuivat positiivisen pedagogiikan osa-alueisiin teoriatiedon pohjalta, joihin sisältyi positiivisen pedagogiikan toimintaa kuvaavia käsitteitä.
