    The synergistic effect of hydroalcoholic extracts of Origanum vulgare, Hypericum perforatum and their active components carvacrol and hypericin against Staphylococcus aureus

    Aim: This study was designed to evaluate the synergistic activities of hydroalcoholic extracts of medicinal plants Origanum vulgare and Hypericum perforatum and their active components, carvacrol and hypericin against Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: The synergistic effects of the plants, as well as carvacrol and hypericin, were examined using a checkered method against S. aureus (ATCC 12600). Results: A fractional inhibitory concentration of 0.5 was obtained for combination of O. vulgare and H. perforatum and 0.49 for combination of the active ingredients carvacrol and hypericin, both of which indicated a synergistic effect. Conclusion: This preliminary evaluation demonstrated a synergistic property of O. vulgare and H. perforatum extracts in treating S. aureus infection. This study indicates that combination of the plants, as well as combination of carvacrol and hypericin, might be used as a new antibacterial strategy against S. aureus. We studied and evaluated the synergistic activities of hydroalcoholic extracts of oregano and St John's wort and their active components, carvacrol and hypericin, against Staphylococcus aureus. The results suggest that a combination of oregano and St John's wort extracts, as well as a combination of hypericin and carvacrol, have potential for use as natural and effective combinations against S. aureus infection

The structures of all the newly synthesized compounds have been comfirmed by elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR. Anti bacterial effects of compounds (1 and 2) have been studied. Following concentrations of materials were used: a=0.005 g/ml and b=0.01 M. Study was done on two strains of <em>S.aureus</em> and <em>E.coli</em> that experiments were done in Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB) and Nutrien Agar (TSB; Difco Laboratory). It is likely that these synthetic materials exert higher antibacterial effect on gram positive bacteria in comparison with gram negative.</span><strong></strong></p><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>     Chemical composition of elamit menta longifolia(L.)huds

    Oregano plant with the scientific name of Mentha longifolia L. and genius of Mentha is owned by the Lamiaceae family. In traditional medicine it is used to treat nausea, bronchitis, bloating and loss of appetite. It also has carminative, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. In this study, the chemical composition of Mentha native to Ilam Province was examined. Initially, the essential oil was extracted and analyzed with chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Based on the results obtained from the GC-MS method SMPE, it became clear that there were 55 active ingredients in the essential oil. Phytochemical analysis showed that beta-Phellandrene, α-PINENE, trans-Caryophyllene and β-Myrcene constituted respectively 19. 95, 17. 85, 10. 15 and 9. 15 of the ingredients of Oregano plant native to Ilam which most known composition of oregano isolated from Ilam Province plant was beta-Phellandrene (19. 95). © 2016, Sphinx Knowledge House. Conclusion: This preliminary evaluation demonstrated a synergistic property of O. vulgare and H. perforatum extracts in treating S. aureus infection. This study indicates that combination of the plants, as well as combination of carvacrol and hypericin, might be used as a new antibacterial strategy against S. aureus

    High-efficiency removal of phosphorous from filtered activated sludge effluent using electrochemical process

    Recently electrochemical process for removing phosphorous (P) from effluents has received more attention to control water resource pollution. However, there are many uncertainties about energy demand in this process. So, in this research energy demand was principally investigated. P concentration was measured on 210 samples before and after the electrochemical process. Direct current electricity was applied in the range of 0.1�1.5 A (A). Cathode and anode electrodes were eight pieces of steel plate submerged in the liquid. After measurement of P concentration, the data were analyzed by Greenhouse-Geisser, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests. The results showed that the optimum reaction time and electricity currents were 10 min and 0.6 A, respectively. Also, 98 efficiency for P removal was achieved. The current density was 1.89 mA/cm2. The energy demand was 7.69 KWh per equivalent of removed P and 0.45 kWh/m3. The data showed that the proposed method is economical and certainly more efficient in comparison with conventional P removal methods. Therefore, the electrochemical process alone by steel electrodes may be a capable process for P removal from filtered activated sludge effluent. © 2020 Elsevier Lt

    The Effects of Pretreatment with Various Doses of L-Arginine on Cisplatin-Induced Nephropathy of Male Rats

    Introduction: Cisplatin is a widely used anti-cancer drug, which its application is limited by nephrotoxicity. In this study, the effect of pretreatment with different l-arginine doses on Cisplatin-induced renal functional injury was investigated. Methods: 63 male rats were divided into 7 groups: In groups 3, 4, 5 and 6, 60 min before the Cisplatin injection (5mg/kg); L-Arginine with doses of 50,100,200 or 400mg/kg was injected, respectively. In group7, normal saline was injected before Cisplatin administration. In groups 1 and 2, normal saline was injected instead of Cisplatin. In group 2, 60min before normal saline injection, 400mg/kg L-Arginine was administered and in group1, instead of L-arginine, normal saline was injected too. Injections were intraperitoneal. 72h after Cisplatin injection, blood sampling and plasma separation were done. Urine sample was collected 24 hours before blood sampling by metabolic cage. The mean of plasma urea and creatinine levels and creatinine clearance (ml/day.kg) and fractional excretion of Na (FENa, %) were compared among different groups as renal functional parameters. Results: In comparison to group 7, L-arginine injection in a dose of 400mg/kg led to significant amelioration of all parameters. 200 mg/kg L-arginine administration led to significant decrease in plasma urea level and FENa. 100mg/kg L-arginine caused significant improvement in fractional excretion of sodium. L-arginine injection with 50mg/kg dose, significantly ameliorate all renal function tests instead of creatinine clearance. Conclusion: Pretreatment with L-arginine administration with 400 or 50 mg/kg doses, respectively, had the highest effect on reducing Cisplatin-induced nephropathy. L-arginine injection with intermediate doses i.e. 200 or 100 mg/kg had less effect in reducing Cisplatin-induced nephropathy and it needs more investigations
