Energy efficient engine preliminary design and integration studies
The characteristics and systems benefits of an energy efficient engine (E3) suitable for use on advanced subsonic transport aircraft were determined. Relative to a current CF6-50C engine, the following benefits were estimated: 14.4% reduction in installed cruise specific fuel consumption, and a reduction in direct operating cost of more than 5%. The advanced technology E3 system would also permit: compliance with FAR 36 (1977) noise limits, and compliance with 1981 EPA emission standards
"Soft X-ray transient" outbursts which aren't soft
We have accumulated multiwavelength (X-ray, optical, radio) lightcurves for
the eight black hole X-ray binaries which have been observed to enter a
supposed `soft X-ray transient' outburst, but remained in the low/hard state
throughout the outburst. Comparison of the lightcurve morphologies, spectral
behaviour, properties of the quasi-periodic oscillations and the radio jet
provides the first study of such objects as a sub-class of X-ray transients.
However rather than assuming that these hard state X-ray transients are
different from the `canonical' soft X-ray transient, we prefer to consider the
possibility that new analysis of both soft and hard state X-ray transients in a
spectral context will provide a model capable of explaining the outburst
mechanisms of (almost) all black hole X-ray binaries.Comment: Accepted for publication in New Astronom
The Hard Truth about Some "Soft" X-ray Transients
We have accumulated multiwavelength lightcurves for eight black hole X-ray
binaries which have been observed to enter a supposed ``soft X-ray transient''
outburst, but which in fact remained in the low/hard state throughout the
outburst. Comparison of the lightcurve morphologies, spectral behaviour,
properties of the QPOs and the radio jet provides the first study of such
objects as a subclass of X-ray transients (XRTs). However, rather than assuming
that these hard state XRTs are different from ``canonical'' soft XRTs, we
prefer to consider the possibility that a new analysis of both soft and hard
state XRTs in a spectral context will provide a model capable of explaining the
outburst mechanisms for the majority of black hole X-ray binaries.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures; to appear in the Proceedings of the 4th

Suspension Design, Modeling, and Testing of a Thermo-Acoustic-Driven Linear Alternator
The Score-Stove™ generates electricity from a wood-burning cooking stove using a thermo-acoustic engine (TAE) that converts heat to sound through a linear alternator (LA). This paper introduces a prototype hemitoroidal suspension that was refined into a segmented trapezoidal shape that gave a higher cyclic life for the LA and includes a critical evaluation that compares a theoretical analysis with experimental results. The results show an improvement from the 40% efficiency of a standard loudspeaker used in reverse as an LA to 70–80% efficiency with the new suspension and a double Halbach array magnetic topology
Distinguished bases of exceptional modules
Exceptional modules are tree modules. A tree module usually has many tree
bases and the corresponding coefficient quivers may look quite differently. The
aim of this note is to introduce a class of exceptional modules which have a
distinguished tree basis, we call them radiation modules (generalizing an
inductive construction considered already by Kinser). For a Dynkin quiver,
nearly all indecomposable representations turn out to be radiation modules, the
only exception is the maximal indecomposable module in case E_8. Also, the
exceptional representation of the generalized Kronecker quivers are given by
radiation modules. Consequently, with the help of Schofield induction one can
display all the exceptional modules of an arbitrary quiver in a nice way.Comment: This is a revised and slightly expanded version. Propositions 1 and 2
