Pre-inspection Mauritania Bivalve Mollusks Food Safety April 20-24th 2008

    Get PDF
Mauritania is working on the completion of a Food Safety Program for Bivalve Mollusks, in order to be obtain an export approval by the Europe Union for the last 4 years (and before). For the second semester 2008 the FVO has programmed a veterinary inspection for the on bivalve mollusks. In order to prepare themselves for the veterinary inspection the competent authority of Mauritania (ONISPA) has requested Wageningen IMARES for a pre-inspection of the Mauritanian system. The pre-inspection was performed during the period of 20-24 April in Mauritania (Nouakchott and Nouadhibou)

During the last four years Mauritania has been working on the completion of a Food Safety Program of Bivalve Mollusks, in order to obtain an export approval by the Europe Union. During the preparations for an inspection by the FVO (Food and Veterinary Office) no fisheries or production activities for Bivalve Mollusks occurred in Mauritania. The aim of the mission was to perform a pre-assessment on the status of the Bivalve Food Safety program in Mauritania. The pre-inspection was carried out in order to prepare Mauritania for the upcoming Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) inspection, planned for the second semester of 2008 or the beginning of 2009

Identification of specific demands on Feed in Dutch Organic Aquaculture

    Get PDF
The evaluation of specific demands for organic feed focussed on feed demands for four fish species which can be cultured in Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS), tilapia, African Catfish, shrimp and turbot. The evaluation of the various feed formulations indicates that there are several ingredients, which are common for the four species, and will therefore be used for further elaboration on the organic availability. These feed ingredients, are: fishmeal and oil, corn meal, wheat meal, blood meal, vitamin mix, mineral mix, and antioxidants. Besides the evaluation of the feed ingredients an inventory was made on the demands set by three key organic standards and legislation documents; European legislation (in prep), IFOAM and Naturland. A draft consensus standard containing a synthesis of all demands has been described. The implication of the demands, and the possibilities and bottlenecks for organic feed production were evaluated for the selected feed ingredients. It was concluded that organic feed production for RAS can meet the general criteria set for feed, on GMO material and organic composition. However, for the production of organic feed, a bottleneck will be the necessary requirement of synthetic amino acids for health improvement. The lack of these amino acids in organic feed can result in potential disadvantage for animal needs. This raw material restrictions will most likely also result in the lack of possibilities for fine tuning the feed for animal need

Hatchery manual for broodstock management and larval production of tubrot (Psetta maxima)

This hatchery manual is intended to provide detailed information from available published work and grey literature on turbot broodstock management and larval production. In reviewing larviculture techniques for turbot, it is notable that the major initial zoo technical advances were made in the 1980s. Subsequent refinements have been industry-led and are subject to commercial confidentiality. Some actors in the sector that have been approached either did not provide requested information or denied access to their sources of information. This manuscript therefore considers those aspects of commercial rearing techniques that are in the public domain, together with the applied scientific literature and information collected from different experts. With the aim to cover all aspects related to the production of turbot juveniles in Dutch farms from egg to fish of 10-15 g, the manual describes in details different steps. These have been grouped around the broodstock management, the hatchery/nursery period, the on growing and the grow out periods. A list of common diseases in turbot has been added at the end. The manual provides a link to the most update information available on live prey production and enrichment

Emerging Risks in the Dutch Food Chain report on project 2: Application of indicator analyses on several critical points in the salmon production chain and identification of related data sources

    Get PDF
An indicator analysis was performed on the fish production chain by assessing the indicators which may be of importance for the detection of emerging risks. The indicators were embedded in a “risk pathway”, in which the relations between different indicators could be illustrated. The risk pathways illustrate the main characteristics of the salmon production chain. However further research is required in order to develop further interaction with other sectors, and production chains to bring emerging risk detection to the next level. In relation to the assigned indicators, a selection of (electronic) data sources were identified in order to be able to combine data flows with indicators and risk pathways. The indicators were analyzed for availability, sources of data entry, validation of data sources, update frequency and delay in input. The combination of risk pathways, indicators and data sources, will be one of the key information sources for the further development of an Emerging Risk Detection Support System (ERDSS)

Monitoring quantity and quality of pangasius pond effluent : report of a monitoring program and recommendations for certification

    Get PDF
The quantity and quality of pangasius pond effluent was monitored by means of monthly sampling during a study conducted on four striped catfish farms located in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The study was undertaken to test the practical implications of the standards and guidelines with regard to catfish pond effluent that are at present developed by various certification programs for striped catfish production in Vietnam. The results showed a great variability twelve pangasius pond within the samples that were taken during one period of partial pond draining and refilling. The consequences of such variability with regard to the certification standards and guidelines are discussed and recommendations are given
