    Packet loss characteristics of IPTV-like traffic on residential links

    Packet loss is one of the principal threats to quality of experience for IPTV systems. However, the packet loss characteristics of the residential access networks which carry IPTV are not widely understood. We present packet level measurements of streaming IPTV-like traffic over four residential access links, and describe the extent and nature of packet loss we encountered. We discuss the likely impact of these losses for IPTV traffic, and outline steps which can ameliorate this

    The Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) is used in a large number of different application domains and environments. This heterogeneity implies that different security mechanisms are needed to provide services such as confidentiality, integrity, and source authentication of RTP and RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) packets suitable for the various environments. The range of solutions makes it difficult for RTP-based application developers to pick the most suitable mechanism. This document provides an overview of a number of security solutions for RTP and gives guidance for developers on how to choose the appropriate security mechanism

Guidelines for designers and reviewers of future RTP extensions are provided, to ensure that appropriate security mechanisms are mandated, and that any such mechanisms are specified in a manner that conforms with the RTP architecture

    An experimental study of client-side Spotify peering behaviour

    Spotify is a popular music-streaming service which has seen widespread use across Europe. While Spotify’s server-side behaviour has previously been studied, little is known about the client-side behaviour. In this paper, we describe an experimental study where we collect packet headers for Spotify traffic over multiple 24-hour time frames at a client host. Two distinct types of behaviour are observed, when tracks are being downloaded, and when the client is only serving requests from other peers. We also note wide variation in connection lifetimes, as seen in other studies of peer-to-peer systems. These findings are relevant for improving Spotify itself, and for the designers of other hybrid peer-to-peer and server-based distribution architectures

    Spin dynamics in the generalized ferromagnetic Kondo model for manganites

    Dynamical spin susceptibility is calculated for the generalized ferromagnetic Kondo model which describes itinerant ege_{g} electrons interacting with localized t2gt_{2g} electrons with antiferromagnetic coupling. The calculations done in the mean field approximation show that the spin-wave spectrum of the system in ferromagnetic state has two branches, acoustic and optic ones. Self-energy corrections to the spectrum are considered and the acoustic spin-wave damping is evaluated

    Magnetic and orbital ordering in cuprates and manganites

    The mechanisms of magnetic and orbital interactions due to double exchange (DE) and superexchange (SE) in transition metal oxides with degenerate e_g orbitals are presented. Specifically, we study the effective spin-orbital models derived for the d^9 ions as in KCuF_3, and for the d^4 ions as in LaMnO_3, for spins S=1/2 and S=2, respectively. Such models are characterized by three types of elementary excitations: spin waves, orbital waves, and spin-and-orbital waves. The SE interactions between Cu^{2+} (d^9) ions are inherently frustrated, which leads to a new mechanism of spin liquid which operates in three dimensions. The SE between Mn^{3+} (d^4) ions explains the A-type antiferromagnetic order in LaMnO_3 which coexists with the orbital order. In contrast, the ferromagnetic metallic phase and isotropic spin waves observed in doped manganites are explained by DE for degenerate e_g orbitals. It is shown that although a hole does not couple to spin excitations in ferromagnetic planes of LaMnO_3, the orbital excitations change the energy scale for the coherent hole propagation and cause a large redistribution of spectral weight.     Patterns of care and treatment outcomes of patients with astroblastoma: A National Cancer Database analysis

    AIM: To evaluate the use of chemotherapy and radiation, and their outcomes for patients with astroblastoma. PATIENTS & METHODS: This is a retrospective review of patients extracted from the National Cancer Database. We investigated overall survival (OS) using Kaplan-Meier curves. Cox proportional hazards models were used to correlate OS with risk variables and treatments. RESULTS: OS at 5 years was 79.5%. Patients with high-grade tumors were more likely to receive chemotherapy and radiation. Patients with high-grade astroblastoma who did not receive adjuvant radiation had poor survival. CONCLUSION: Patients with astroblastoma should be treated with curative intent. Radiation is likely beneficial in high-grade astroblastoma. The exact role of radiation and chemotherapy following surgical resection warrant further investigation

    Atmospheric constituent measurements using commercial 747 airliners

    NASA is implementing a Global Atmospheric Monitoring Program to measure the temporal and spatial distribution of particulate and gaseous constituents related to aircraft engine emissions in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (6 to 12 Km). Several 747 aircraft operated by different airlines flying routes selected for maximum world coverage will be instrumented. An instrumentation system is being assembled and tested and is scheduled for operation in airline service in late 1974. Specialized instrumentation and an electronic control unit are required for automatic unattended operation on commercial airliners. An ambient air sampling system was developed to provide undisturbed outside air to the instruments in the pressurized aircraft cabin
