    Hydrogen charging of carbon and low alloy steel by electrochemical methods

    Atomic hydrogen can be the result of different processes like electroplating, chemical and electrochemical pickling treatments, in welding or by cathodic processes in corrosive fluids. Moreover, adsorption of atomic hydrogen can affect materials in contact with high pressure gaseous hydrogen. Once entered the material, atomic hydrogen interacts with the metal structure and may produce a "damage" of various forms, such as Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC), delayed fracture, blistering and hydrogen embrittlement. In particular, when H2S is present ("sour service"), metallic materials, such as carbon and low alloy steels, may suffer hydrogen damage and hydrogen embrittlement. Sour service materials must be used in compliance with international accepted standards, used worldwide in oil and gas activities, when fluids are classified as sour. The present study has been carried out in order to set up an electrochemical method to charge with hydrogen two typical pipeline materials, carbon and low alloy steels. The reason of the use of an electrochemical method is to avoid any critical conditions from the point of view of preparation, safety and disposal. Hydrogen content in the specimens was measured by two different methods: hot glycerol bath and Inert Gas Fusion (IGF) analysis. Hydrogen content in the specimens is about 0.6-2 ppm; mechanical performances were assessed by means of J integral tests: a pronounced decrease of fracture toughness was observed for H charged specimens.{GRAPHIACAL ABSTRACT

    A Comprehensive Investigation on the Effects of Surface Finishing on the Resistance of Stainless Steel to Localized Corrosion

    The present research investigates the influence of surface roughness imparted by cold surface finishing processes on the localized corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Five different alloys were studied: ferritic AISI 430, martensitic AISI 430F, austenitic AISI 303, AISI 304L, and AISI 316L. It was demonstrated that the grinding process, executed on previously cold drawn bars, leads to an improvement in corrosion resistance according to the results obtained with electrochemical tests, namely, potentiostatic and potentiodynamic tests in chloride-rich environments, the salt spray test, and long-term exposure in urban and marine atmospheres. This allowed us to establish a trend among the different alloys regarding the resistance to pitting corrosion, which was assessed according to pitting potentials, critical chloride contents, and pitting initiation time. All the tests confirmed that surface finishing, as well as alloy chemical composition, is an important factor in controlling the corrosion resistance of stainless steel

    Maternal and Paternal Representations in Assisted Reproductive Technology and Spontaneous Conceiving Parents: A Longitudinal Study

    Aim of this study was to investigate whether parental mental representations during pregnancy and after delivery differed between parents who conceived after Assisted Reproductive Treatments (ART) and spontaneous conceiving (SC) parents. Effects of specific ART variables (previous ART attempts, treatment type and cause of infertility) were also taken into account. Seventeen ART couples and 25 SC couples were recruited at Santa Maria Nuova Hospital (Reggio Emilia, Italy). At both 32 weeks of gestation (T1) and 3 months postpartum (T2) participants completed the Semantic Differential of the IRMAG, a self-report tool which measures specific domains of mental representations pertaining either individual (Child, Self-as-woman/man, and Partner) or parental (Self-as-parent, Own parent) characteristics. Results showed that ART parents had significantly more positive representations of the child compared to SC parents, while the scores at Partner dimension improved from T1 to T2 for SC parents only. With regards to ART history, scores at the Self-as-woman/man dimension were significantly less positive for ICSI than IVF parents and improved substantially from T1 to T2 only in case of mothers with previous ART attempts and of fathers at the first ART cycle. The representation of own parents increased from T1 to T2 in case of infertility diagnosis due to male factors, while a decrease emerged when infertility was due to female factors. Findings suggest the need to investigate parental mental representations after ART, in order to improve the understanding on the transition to parenthood of infertile couples and to target more specific intervention for parenting support

    A Multi-objective Exploratory Procedure for Regression Model Selection

    Variable selection is recognized as one of the most critical steps in statistical modeling. The problems encountered in engineering and social sciences are commonly characterized by over-abundance of explanatory variables, non-linearities and unknown interdependencies between the regressors. An added difficulty is that the analysts may have little or no prior knowledge on the relative importance of the variables. To provide a robust method for model selection, this paper introduces the Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm for Variable Selection (MOGA-VS) that provides the user with an optimal set of regression models for a given data-set. The algorithm considers the regression problem as a two objective task, and explores the Pareto-optimal (best subset) models by preferring those models over the other which have less number of regression coefficients and better goodness of fit. The model exploration can be performed based on in-sample or generalization error minimization. The model selection is proposed to be performed in two steps. First, we generate the frontier of Pareto-optimal regression models by eliminating the dominated models without any user intervention. Second, a decision making process is executed which allows the user to choose the most preferred model using visualisations and simple metrics.     Optimization Heuristics for Determining Internal Rating Grading Scales

    Basel II imposes regulatory capital on banks related to the default risk of their credit portfolio. Banks using an internal rating approach compute the regulatory capital from pooled probabilities of default. These pooled probabilities can be calculated by clustering credit borrowers into different buckets and computing the mean PD for each bucket. The clustering problem can become very complex when Basel II regulations and real-world constraints are taken into account. Search heuristics have already proven remarkable performance in tackling this problem. A Threshold Accepting algorithm is proposed, which exploits the inherent discrete nature of the clustering problem. This algorithm is found to outperform alternative methodologies already proposed in the literature, such as standard k-means and Differential Evolution. Besides considering several clustering objectives for a given number of buckets, we extend the analysis further by introducing new methods to determine the optimal number of buckets in which to cluster banks’ clients

    Does needle calibre affect pain and complication rates in patients undergoing transperineal prostate biopsy? A prospective, randomized trial

    Transperineal prostate biopsy is a procedure that can be used to obtain histological samples from the prostate. To improve both the quality of the biopsy core samples and prostate cancer detection, we are currently performing a prospective, randomized trial comparing prostate biopsy samples obtained using an 18 G-needle to those obtained using a 16 G needle. The aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate pain and complication rates in both groups in order to assess whether performing a prostate biopsy with a larger calibre needle is a feasible procedure. One hundred and eighty-seven patients undergoing transperineal prostate biopsy were prospectively evaluated and divided into two groups. The first group (94 patients, Group A) received a transperineal prostate biopsy using a 16 G-needle and the second group (93 patients, Group B) underwent transperineal prostate biopsy with an 18 G-needle. Anaesthesia was obtained with a single perineal injection at the prostatic apex in all subjects. A visual analogue scale (VAS) and facial expression scale (FES) were used to assess pain during multiple steps of the procedure in each group. A detailed questionnaire was used to obtain information about drug use because it could potentially influence the pain and complications that patients experienced. Two weeks after the procedure, early and late complications were evaluated. Statistical analysis was carried out using non-parametric tests. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and drug use were similar at baseline between the two groups. Pain during prostate biopsy, which was measured with both the VAS and FES instruments, did not differ significantly between the 18- and 16 G-needle groups, and no significant differences were found in early or late complication rates between the groups. Transperineal prostate biopsy with a 16 G-needle is a feasible procedure in terms of pain and complication rates. Further studies with larger patient populations are required to assess whether or not this procedure can improve prostate cancer detection rates

    Biosinteis y caracterización de nanoparticulas de plata por actinobacterias metalo resistentes

    La nanobiosíntesis es una “tecnología verde" con numerosos beneficios por la que se obtienen NPs por procesos biológicos. Las AgNPs tienen una gran importancia debido a sus aplicaciones en medicina para el revelado de imágenes tumorales, liberación controlada de drogas, y fundamentalmente, excelentes propiedades antimicrobianas El objetivo fue evaluar la capacidad de biosíntesis de AgNPs por Streptomyces M7 y caracterizar las mismas y determinar su efecto antimicrobiano. La actinobacteria metalo-resistente Streptomyces M7 fue cultivada durante 72 hs en caldo Tripteína-Soja. Las células separadas del sobrenadante por centrifugación, fueron inoculadas en agua tridestilada (100gL-1) incubadas con agitación 72 hs. Mediante centrifugación se recuperó el sobrenadante (fuente de biomoléculas reductoras) con el que se preparó una solución de AgNO3 de 0,5 y 1 mM. Las soluciones se incubaron con agitación, 72 hs y se tomaron muestras cada 24 hs, realizando controles apropiados. Se evaluó la síntesis de AgNPs por medición de absorbancia (espectrofotómetro UV-visible, 200-800 nm) y por microscopia electrónica de barrido (MEB). La composición elemental de las AgNPS se evaluó mediante Espectroscopia de Energía Dispersada (EDS). La muestra tomada a las 72 hs, con una concentración 1 mM AgNO3 presentó el pico más alto de absorbancia (DO: 1,48) en comparación a las demás muestras. Esta absorbancia coincide con la reportada para AgNPs. Las imágenes de MEB revelaron la presencia de NPs agregadas, de tamaño heterogéneo entre 17,71 nm (min) y 94,44 nm (max) en el caso de AgNPs. El espectro EDS presentó una fuerte señal para Ag y otros picos más débiles correspondientes a otros elementos.
