    Dynamique de la teneur en carbone et en azote des sols dans les systèmes d’exploitation du Ferlo : cas du CRZ de Dahra

    Objectif : Cette étude, réalisée au Centre de Recherches Zootechniques (CRZ) de Dahra situé en Région sylvopastorale du Sénégal, a pour objectif d’apprécier l’évolution de la teneur en carbone, en azote et le stock de carbone du sol dans ses différents systèmes d’exploitation.Méthodologie et résultats : En 2011, des échantillons de sols (à 0-20 cm et 20 – 40 cm) ont été prélevés au niveau des mêmes sites que ceux qui ont fait l’objet d’analyse de sols en 1962, afin de déterminer la teneur en carbone et azote du sol. Le nombre d’échantillons est fonction de la superficie des différents types de sols rencontrés. L’utilisation de la cartographie nous a permis de déterminer le nombre d’échantillon prélevé sur chaque système d’exploitation. Au niveau du CRZ de Dahra, l’analyse des paramètres pédologiques (teneur en carbone, en azote et rapport C/N) de l’horizon 0-20 cm, n’a pas révélé de différence significative entre 1962 et 2011. Par contre, dans l’horizon 20-40 cm, seule la teneur en azote présente une hausse significative entre ces deux périodes. S’agissant des systèmes d’exploitation du CRZ de Dahra, l’analyse de la teneur en carbone, en azote et du rapport C/N de l’horizon 0-20 cm, n’a pas révélé de différence significative aussi bien pour l’année 1962 que celle de 2011. Au niveau de l’horizon 20-40 cm, parmi les paramètres étudiés, seul la teneur en carbone de 1962 présentait une différence significative (au seuil de 5%) entre les systèmes de cultures et les pâturages. Le stock de carbone du centre est en moyenne de 0,08±0,03 et 0,06±0,02 t/ha respectivement pour les horizons 0-20 et 20-40 cm. Celui-ci est plus important au niveau des gommiers et plus faibles dans les systèmes de culture et les pâturages.Conclusion et application des résultats : Cette étude a permis de montrer qu’au niveau du CRZ de Dahra à vocation essentiellement pastorale, le carbone et l’azote du sol, présente une certaine stabilité dans les différents systèmes d’exploitation. Toutefois, les gommiers présentent les teneurs en carbone et en azote du sol les plus importantes. Ces résultats peuvent servir de données d’entrée aux modèles de prévision de la séquestration du carbone et de l’azote du sol des écosystèmes sahéliens pastoraux, être valorisés en aménagement pastoral et agro-sylvopastoral en vue d’une meilleure préservation de l’environnement et de la gestion de la fertilité du sol.Mots clés : carbone, l'azote, le contenu, les sol

    Positron spectra from internal pair conversion observed in {238}U + {181}Ta collisions

    We present new results from measurements and simulations of positron spectra, originating from 238U + 181Ta collisions at beam energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The measurements were performed using an improved experimental setup at the double-Orange spectrometer of GSI. Particular emphasis is put on the signature of positrons from Internal-Pair-Conversion (IPC) processes in the measured e+ energy spectra, following the de-excitation of electromagnetic transitions in the moving Ta-like nucleus. It is shown by Monte Carlo simulations that, for the chosen current sweeping procedure used in the present experiments, positron emission from discrete IPC transitions can lead to rather narrow line structures in the measured energy spectra. The measured positron spectra do not show evidence for line structures within the statistical accuracy achieved, although expected from the intensities of the observed γ\gamma transitions (Eγ 1250−1600_{\gamma}~1250-1600 keV) and theoretical conversion coefficients. This is due to the reduced detection efficiency for IPC positrons, caused by the limited spatial and momentum acceptance of the spectrometer.     Off-shore and underwater sampling of aquatic environments with the aerial-aquatic drone MEDUSA

    Monitoring of aquatic habitats for water quality and biodiversity requires regular sampling, often in off-shore locations and underwater. Such sampling is commonly performed manually from research vessels, or if autonomous, is constrained to permanent installations. Consequentially, high frequency ecological monitoring, such as for harmful algal blooms, are limited to few sites and/or temporally infrequent. Here, we demonstrate the use of MEDUSA, an Unmanned Aerial-Aquatic Vehicle which is capable of performing underwater sampling and inspection at up to 10 m depth, and is composed of a multirotor platform, a tether management unit and a tethered micro Underwater Vehicle. The system is validated in the task of vertical profiling of Chlorophyll-a levels in freshwater systems by means of a custom solid sample filtering mechanism. This mechanism can collect up to two independent samples per mission by pumping water through a pair of glass-fibre GF/F filters. Chlorophyll levels measured from the solid deposits on the filters are consistent and on par with traditional sampling methods, highlighting the potential of using UAAVs to sample aquatic locations at high frequency and high spatial resolution

    Early pericalcarine atrophy in acute optic neuritis is associated with conversion to multiple sclerosis

    Background: Previous work showed that pericalcarine cortical volume loss is evident early after presentation with acute clinically isolated optic neuritis (ON). The aims of this study were: (1) to determine whether pericalcarine atrophy in patients with ON is associated with conversion to multiple sclerosis (MS); (2) to investigate whether regional atrophy preferentially affects pericalcarine cortex; and (3) to investigate potential causes of early pericalcarine atrophy using MRI. / Methods: 28 patients with acute ON and 10 controls underwent structural MRI (brain and optic nerves) and were followed-up over 12 months. Associations between the development of MS, optic nerve, optic radiation and pericalcarine cortical damage measures were investigated using multiple linear regression models. Regional cortical volumetric differences between patients and controls were calculated using t tests. / Results: The development of MS at 12 months was associated with greater whole brain and optic radiation lesion loads, shorter acute optic nerve lesions and smaller pericalcarine cortical volume at baseline. Regional atrophy was not evident in other sampled cortical regions. Pericalcarine atrophy was not directly associated with whole brain lesion load, optic radiation measures or optic nerve lesion length. However, the association between pericalcarine atrophy and MS was not independent of these parameters. / Conclusions: Reduced pericalcarine cortical volumes in patients with early clinically isolated ON were associated with the development of MS but volumes of other cortical regions were not. Hence pericalcarine cortical regions appear particularly susceptible to early damage. These findings could be explained by a combination of pathological effects to visual grey and white matter in patients with ON

    Socially sensitive lactation: Exploring the social context of breastfeeding

    Many women report difficulties with breastfeeding and do not maintain the practice for as long as intended. Although psychologists and other researchers have explored some of the difficulties they experience, fuller exploration of the relational contexts in which breastfeeding takes place is warranted to enable more in-depth analysis of the challenges these pose for breastfeeding women. The present paper is based on qualitative data collected from 22 first-time breastfeeding mothers through two phases of interviews and audio-diaries which explored how the participants experienced their relationships with significant others and the wider social context of breastfeeding in the first five weeks postpartum. Using a thematic analysis informed by symbolic interactionism, we develop the overarching theme of ‘Practising socially sensitive lactation’ which captures how participants felt the need to manage tensions between breastfeeding and their perceptions of the needs, expectations and comfort of others. We argue that breastfeeding remains a problematic social act, despite its agreed importance for child health. Whilst acknowledging the limitations of our sample and analytic approach, we suggest ways in which perinatal and public health interventions can take more effective account of the social challenges of breastfeeding in order to facilitate the health and psychological well-being of mothers and their infants

    Characterization of a new pathway that activates lumisterol <i>in vivo</i> to biologically active hydroxylumisterols

    Abstract Using LC/qTOF-MS we detected lumisterol, 20-hydroxylumisterol, 22-hydroxylumisterol, 24-hydroxylumisterol, 20,22-dihydroxylumisterol, pregnalumisterol, 17-hydroxypregnalumisterol and 17,20-dihydroxypregnalumisterol in human serum and epidermis, and the porcine adrenal gland. The hydroxylumisterols inhibited proliferation of human skin cells in a cell type-dependent fashion with predominant effects on epidermal keratinocytes. They also inhibited melanoma proliferation in both monolayer and soft agar. 20-Hydroxylumisterol stimulated the expression of several genes, including those associated with keratinocyte differentiation and antioxidative responses, while inhibiting the expression of others including RORA and RORC. Molecular modeling and studies on VDRE-transcriptional activity excludes action through the genomic site of the VDR. However, their favorable interactions with the A-pocket in conjunction with VDR translocation studies suggest they may act on this non-genomic VDR site. Inhibition of RORα and RORγ transactivation activities in a Tet-on CHO cell reporter system, RORα co-activator assays and inhibition of (RORE)-LUC reporter activity in skin cells, in conjunction with molecular modeling, identified RORα and RORγ as excellent receptor candidates for the hydroxylumisterols. Thus, we have discovered a new biologically relevant, lumisterogenic pathway, the metabolites of which display biological activity. This opens a new area of endocrine research on the effects of the hydroxylumisterols on different pathways in different cells and the mechanisms involved

    Model Order Reduction for Rotating Electrical Machines

    The simulation of electric rotating machines is both computationally expensive and memory intensive. To overcome these costs, model order reduction techniques can be applied. The focus of this contribution is especially on machines that contain non-symmetric components. These are usually introduced during the mass production process and are modeled by small perturbations in the geometry (e.g., eccentricity) or the material parameters. While model order reduction for symmetric machines is clear and does not need special treatment, the non-symmetric setting adds additional challenges. An adaptive strategy based on proper orthogonal decomposition is developed to overcome these difficulties. Equipped with an a posteriori error estimator the obtained solution is certified. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

    Fate of the Josephson effect in thin-film superconductors

    The dc Josephson effect refers to the dissipationless electrical current -- the supercurrent -- that can be sustained across a weak link connecting two bulk superconductors. This effect is a probe of the fundamental nature of the superconducting state. Here, we analyze the case of two superconducting thin films connected by a point contact. Remarkably, the Josephson effect is absent at nonzero temperature, and the resistance across the contact is nonzero. Moreover, the point contact resistance is found to vary with temperature in a nearly activated fashion, with a UNIVERSAL energy barrier determined only by the superfluid stiffness characterizing the films, an angle characterizing the geometry, and whether or not the Coulomb interaction between Cooper pairs is screened. This behavior reflects the subtle nature of the superconductivity in two-dimensional thin films, and should be testable in detail by future experiments.Comment: 16 + 8 pages. 1 figure, 1 tabl
