Assessing the ecological risk posed by a recently established invasive alien predator: Harmonia axyridis as a case study

Invasive alien predators are a serious threat to biodiversity worldwide. However, there is no generic method for assessing which local species are most at risk following the invasion of a new predator. The harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), is an alien in Europe and many other parts of the world where it affects other species of ladybirds through competition for food and intra-guild predation (IGP). Here, we describe a method developed to assess which European ladybird species are most at risk following the invasion of H. axyridis. The three components of the risk assessment are: the likelihood that the assessed native species encounters H. axyridis in the field, the hazard of competition for food, and the IGP hazard. Thirty native European ladybird species were assessed through data obtained from field observations, laboratory experiments and literature reviews. The species that are considered most at risk are found on deciduous trees, have immature stages which are highly vulnerable to IGP by H. axyridis, and are primarily aphidophagous. These species should be the focus of specific studies and possibly conservation actions. The risk assessment method proposed here could be applied to other alien predators which are considered a threat to native species through competition and predation

The Atlantic Forest is a global hotspot for biodiversity conservation; however, human actions threaten and unbalance the dynamics of the natural processes of the biome. The present study investigated the incidence of solar radiation within a fragment of semi deciduous seasonal forest in the area of the Atlantic Forest Biome in southeastern Brazil. In the four seasons of the year, the leaf area index (LAI) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were measured in the understory vegetation. The measurements were made at one-meter height, in ten different locations in the forest fragment, with different terrain exposure and slope. The annual average LAI was 4.5 and the PAR transmissivity was 4.1%. However, the results showed a spatial and seasonal variability of the leaf area index in the studied forest fragment. The seasonal variation of PAR in the understory vegetation was due to the LAI and to the different slopes and terrain exposures. The spatial heterogeneity in PAR availability is indicative of high plant diversity in the forest fragment

The coexistence of public and private health care systems in Brazil is old and their arrangements have contributed to the construction of a fragmented system. In seeking to establish policies in agreement with the Brazilian Unifed Health System, the National Agency of Supplemental Health insurance has encouraged the development of programs for health promotion and disease prevention on the private sector. These actions are a heterogeneous set of strategies to consolidate policies aiming at the population's health. This is a qualitative study that analyzes these preventive programs in a private health insurance agency, to understand whether they produce bio-political devices. Speeches were collected from users of the programs through a semi-structured script using the technique of content analysis. The results show that some restructuring processes of care production are ongoing, and relational aspects have been targeted in these programs. These actions are configured in devices leading biopolitical forms of life. It is important to have balance between these powers and the production practices of freedom, noting that there is no arbitrary and authoritarian biopolitical interventions in the production of health actions

To identify the causes of changes in therapeutic regimens for treating AIDS in children infected through vertical transmission. This was a case-control study in which the control group consisted of 49 children who had not had any changes to their antiretroviral regimen and the case group consisted of 62 children who had had changes between January 2000 and December 2005. Data from the patients' medical files and a semistructured interview were used. The data analysis was carried out using the SPSS software, and the chi-square test and logistic regression were applied. The main causes of changes in treatment were: increased viral load (48.4%), poor immunological response (46.6%) and clinical worsening (35.5%) of the patients. The adjustment of the data through logistic regression analysis showed that drug intolerance was the variable that contributed most to the change in medication (adjusted OR: 79.94; 95% CI: 6.28 -1034.55). Adherence was not shown to be responsible for changes in the anti-retroviral therapy, and this was attributable to the organization of the service and actions of the interdisciplinary team
