México, the Huasteca Region is found in the northeast of the country, covering the northern part of Veracruz, south of Tamaulipas, east of San Luis Potosí and northeast of Hidalgo; in its areas of natural vegetation there is an abundant variation of wild and semi-domesticated peppers (Capsicum spp.), among which the following groups predominate: piquín, piquín huasteco, chilpaya (Tabasco), pico de paloma (ozuluamero), mirador pico de pájaro and rayado. In a lower scale, there are variants of espinalteco and cuaresmeño jalapeños, chile de huerta and pajarito. Collections were made of the different biological types in order to characterize them morphologically; 102 accessions were identified and characterized from semi-domesticated and wild types that belonged to 10 racial groups, with two groups, piquín and piquín huasteco, standing out as a result of their abundance. Understanding the Long-Term Benefits of a Latino Financial Literacy Education Program

    Get PDF
The long-term impact of a Latino financial literacy program was evaluated with a sample of relatively recent immigrant populations in southern Minnesota. Telephone and face-to-face interviews were conducted with participants 6 months post program completion. Results indicate that improvements in knowledge and skills were retained and that these learning were applied to make improvements in participants\u27 financial situations. Participants acknowledged that more important than gaining knowledge was learning how to apply what they have learned. Implications for Extension are offered in terms of those factors that promoted the effectiveness of the financial literacy education

A Survey of key methods, traits, parameters, and conditions for measuring texture in cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.)

    Get PDF
In the cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) industry, the textural properties and firmness of the fruit are priority traits for producing processed products, such as sweetened dried cranberry (SDC), which have gained popularity in recent years. However, there is currently no reliable methodology for screening these traits in breeding programs. In this study, we examine the key methodologies, textural traits, parameters, and conditions that are necessary to accurately and efficiently measure the texture of cranberry fruit. Double compression, single compression, puncture, shearing and Kramer shear cell methodologies were successfully implemented in cranberry, resulting in a total of 47 textural features. These features allowed the evaluation of the texture of the cranberry fruit based on key factors such as flesh, structure, and skin. This study also examined factors than can affect the performance of texture measurements, including the optimal sample size, storage time, fruit texture-size correlation, fruit temperature and orientation, optimal speed/strain combinations, and the effect of probe diameter. The results of the study suggests that certain texture traits of the compression and puncture methodologies could potentially be used to test varieties and aid in breeding program

Parámetros fisicoquímicos para determinar la calidad del agua de la Laguna de Meoacán, Paraíso, Tabasco

    Get PDF

Kernicterus by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency: a case report and review of the literature

    Get PDF

Abstract

Introduction

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is an X-linked recessive disease that causes acute or chronic hemolytic anemia and potentially leads to severe jaundice in response to oxidative agents. This deficiency is the most common human innate error of metabolism, affecting more than 400 million people worldwide.

Case presentation

Here, we present the first documented case of kernicterus in Panama, in a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient newborn clothed in naphthalene-impregnated garments, resulting in reduced psychomotor development, neurosensory hypoacousia, absence of speech and poor reflex of the pupil to light.

Conclusion

Mutational analysis revealed the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase Mediterranean polymorphic variant, which explained the development of kernicterus after exposition of naphthalene. As the use of naphthalene in stored clothes is a common practice, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase testing in neonatal screening could prevent severe clinical consequences.</p

Transition metal oxide nanocatalysts for the deoxygenation of palm oil to green diesel

    Get PDF
This study investigated the hydrodeoxygenation of palm oil by different oxide nanocatalysts of transition metals α -Fe2O3, NiO, and NiFe2O4, which were synthesized by hot injection. All nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic light dispersion. The catalytic evaluation was performed in a Parr-type reactor at 350°C, 3.5 MPa of H2 pressure, and 3 h of reaction. The liquid product obtained was analyzed by ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy to identify the n-C16 generated during the reaction. The activity in the deoxygenation of fatty acids to produce n-C16 hydrocarbons has the following order: α-Fe2O3 < NiFe2O4 < NiO
