An assessment of threats to terrestrial protected areas
Protected areas (PAs) represent a cornerstone of efforts to safeguard biodiversity, and if effective should reduce threats to biodiversity. We present the most comprehensive assessment of threats to terrestrial PAs, based on in-situ data from 1,961 PAs across 149 countries, assessed by PA managers and local stakeholders. Unsustainable hunting was the most commonly reported threat and occurred in 61% of all PAs, followed by disturbance from recreational activities occurring in 55%, and natural system modifications from fire or its suppression in 49%. The number of reported threats was lower in PAs with greater remoteness, higher control of corruption and lower human development scores. The main reported threats in developing countries were linked to overexploitation for resource extraction, while negative impacts from recreational activities dominated in developed countries. Our results show that many of the most serious threats to PAs are difficult to monitor with remote sensing, and highlight the importance of in situ threat data to inform the implementation of more effective biodiversity conservation in the global protected area estate
A global analysis of management capacity and ecological outcomes in terrestrial protected areas
Protecting important sites is a key strategy for halting the loss of biodiversity. However, our understanding of the relationship between management inputs and biodiversity outcomes in protected areas (PAs) remains weak. Here, we examine biodiversity outcomes using species population trends in PAs derived from the Living Planet Database in relation to management data derived from the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) database for 217 population time‐series from 73 PAs. We found a positive relationship between our METT‐based scores for Capacity and Resources and changes in vertebrate abundance, consistent with the hypothesis that PAs require adequate resourcing to halt biodiversity loss. Additionally, PA age was negatively correlated with trends for the mammal subsets and PA size negatively correlated with population trends in the global subset. Our study highlights the paucity of appropriate data for rigorous testing of the role of management in maintaining species populations across multiple sites, and describes ways to improve our understanding of PA performance
Business experience and start-up size: buying more lottery tickets next time around?
This paper explores the determinants of start-up size by focusing on a cohort of 6247 businesses that started trading in 2004, using a unique dataset on customer records at Barclays Bank. Quantile regressions show that prior business experience is significantly related with start-up size, as are a number of other variables such as age, education and bank account activity. Quantile treatment effects (QTE) estimates show similar results, with the effect of business experience on (log) start-up size being roughly constant across the quantiles. Prior personal business experience leads to an increase in expected start-up size of about 50%. Instrumental variable QTE estimates are even higher, although there are concerns about the validity of the instrument

New range limits of the sun-tailed monkey, Cercopithecus solatus, in Central Gabon
Cercopithecus solatus is a recently discovered monkey endemic to Gabon, present in parts of the Lopé National Park and the Forêt des Abeilles in the center of the country. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (2010) due to its restricted extent of occurrence and continuing decline in population caused by high hunting pressure. All known field observations of this species are compiled here. Data collected since 1999 show that C. solatus occurs further to the south, east, and west than was previously known, and that its extent of occurrence almost certainly includes three national parks, rather than one
Electron-spin-resonance in the doped spin-Peierls compound Cu(1-x)Ni(x)GeO3
ESR-study of the Ni-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 has been performed in
the frequency range 9-75 GHz. At low temperatures the g-factor is smaller than
the value expected for Cu- and Ni-ions. This anomaly is explained by the
formation of magnetic clusters around the Ni-ions within a nonmagnetic
spin-Peierls matrix. The transition into the AFM-state detected earlier by
neutron scattering for doped samples was studied by means of ESR. For x=0.032 a
gap in the magnetic resonance spectrum is found below the Neel temperature and
the spectrum is well described by the theory of antiferromagnetic resonance
based on the molecular field approximation. For x=0.017 the spectrum below the
Neel point remained gapless. The gapless spectrum of the antiferromagnetic
state in weekly doped samples is attributed to the small value of the Neel

Reducing falls after hospital discharge: Protocol for a randomised controlled trial evaluating an individualised multi-modal falls education program for older adults
Introduction: Older adults frequently fall after discharge from hospital. Older people may have low self-perceived risk of falls and poor knowledge about falls prevention. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of providing tailored falls prevention education in addition to usual care on falls rates in older people after discharge from hospital compared to providing a social intervention in addition to usual care. Methods and analyses: The ‘Back to My Best’ study is a multisite, single blind, parallel-group randomised controlled trial with blinded outcome assessment and intention-to-treat analysis, adhering to CONSORT guidelines. Patients (n=390) (aged 60 years or older; score more than 7/10 on the Abbreviated Mental Test Score; discharged to community settings) from aged care rehabilitation wards in three hospitals will be recruited and randomly assigned to one of two groups. Participants allocated to the control group shall receive usual care plus a social visit. Participants allocated to the experimental group shall receive usual care and a falls prevention programme incorporating a video, workbook and individualised follow-up from an expert health professional to foster capability and motivation to engage in falls prevention strategies. The primary outcome is falls rates in the first 6 months after discharge, analysed using negative binomial regression with adjustment for participant\u27s length of observation in the study. Secondary outcomes are injurious falls rates, the proportion of people who become fallers, functional status and health-related quality of life. Healthcare resource use will be captured from four sources for 6 months after discharge. The study is powered to detect a 30% relative reduction in the rate of falls (negative binomial incidence ratio 0.70) for a control rate of 0.80 falls per person over 6 months. Ethics and dissemination: Results will be presented in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences worldwide. This study is approved by hospital and university Human Research Ethics Committees
Separation of the magnetic phases at the N\'{e}el point in the diluted spin-Peierls magnet CuGeO3
The impurity induced antiferromagnetic ordering of the doped spin-Peierls
magnet Cu(1-x)Mg(x)GeO(3) was studied by ESR technique. Crystals with the Mg
concentration x<4% demonstrate a coexistence of paramagnetic and
antiferromagnetic ESR modes. This coexistence indicates the separation of a
macroscopically uniform sample in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic
phases. In the presence of the long-range spin-Peierls order (in a sample with
x=1.71%) the volume of the antiferromagnetic phase immediately below the
N\'{e}el point T_N is much smaller than the volume of the paramagnetic phase.
In the presence of the short-range spin-Peierls order (in samples with x=2.88%,
x= 3.2%) there are comparable volumes of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic
phases at T=T_N. The fraction of the antiferromagnetic phase increases with
lowering temperature. In the absence of the spin-Peierls dimerization (at
x=4.57%)the whole sample exhibits the transition into the antiferromagnetic
state and there is no phase separation. The phase separation is explained by
the consideration of clusters of staggered magnetization located near impurity
atoms. In this model the areas occupied by coherently correlated spins expand
with decreasing temperature and the percolation of the ordered area through a
