    Do agents dream of abiding by the rules?:Learning norms via behavioral exploration and sparse human supervision

    In recent years, several normative systems have been presented in the literature. Relying on formal methods, these systems support the encoding of legal rules into machine-readable formats, enabling, e.g. to check whether a certain workflow satisfies or agents abide by these rules. However, not all rules can be easily expressed (see for instance the unclear boundaries between tax planning and tax avoidance). The paper introduces a framework for norm identification and norm induction that automates the formalization of norms about non-compliant behavior by exploring the behavioral space via simulation, and integrating inputs from humans via active learning. The proposed problem formulation sets also a bridge between AI &amp; law and more general branches of AI concerned by the adaptation of artificial agents to human directives.</p

    SEU Robustness, Total Dose Radiation Hardness and Analogue Performance of the Beetle Chip

    The Beetle is a 128 channel readout chip for silicon strip detectors in LHCb. In addition to the pipelined readout path known from the RD20 architecture which can be used either in analogue or binary mode, the Beetle features an additional prompt binary readout path, used for the LHCb pile-up veto counters and a triple-redundant layout of the control logic. It is manufactured in commercial 0.25 µm CMOS technology using radiation hard design techniques. In addition to a total dose irradiation with X-rays, an SEU irradiation test with 65 MeV protons was performed with Beetle1.3. The results of this test are presented together with new results from the Beetle versions 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5, which were submitted in the Beetle ER engineering run in May 2004

    Beetle is a 128-channel readout chip, which will be used in the silicon vertex detector, the pile-up veto counters and the silicon tracker of the LHCb experiment at CERN. A further application of the Beetle chip is the readout of the LHCb RICH, in case it is equipped with multi-anode PMTs. The scope of this paper is the design changes leading to the latest version 1.3 of the Beetle readout chip. In addition, measurements on earlier versions and simulation results driving these changes are shown

    Spin-Momentum Correlations in Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering from Deuterium

    We report on a measurement of spin-momentum correlations in quasi-elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons with an energy of 720 MeV from vector-polarized deuterium. The spin correlation parameter AedVA^V_{ed} was measured for the 2H(e,ep)n^2 \vec{\rm H}(\vec e,e^\prime p)n reaction for missing momenta up to 350 MeV/cc at a four-momentum transfer squared of 0.21 (GeV/c)2^2. The data give detailed information about the spin structure of the deuteron, and are in good agreement with the predictions of microscopic calculations based on realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials and including various spin-dependent reaction mechanism effects. The experiment demonstrates in a most direct manner the effects of the D-state in the deuteron ground-state wave function and shows the importance of isobar configurations for this reaction.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.
