THEORETICAL DESIGN STUDY ON SHAFTING ALIGNMENT CALCULATION FOR HIGH SPEED CRAFT

    Get PDF
The design reliability of the theory applied when calculating the sensitivity of shafting alignment must be determined especially at the initial design stage of shafting arrangement and calculation for the vertical static bearing loads (reaction forces) and pressures in order to obtain positive uniform values, which have to comply with the design requirements of the High Speed Craft Code of Classification Society. Any poor design of shafting arrangement for each vertical static bearing location and/or bearing off-set design value may cause a failed shafting alignment calculation and a non-uniform bearing load or over excessive bearing load and pressure on the propulsion shaft stern tube/strut supporting bearing and possible further damage, for example, excessive wastage and/or crack on a damaged aft shaft strut bearing for a high speed craft. The objective of this study was to find and verify the design reliability of the applied theoretical method for calculating the suitable design values of each vertical static bearing load and pressure on the propulsion shafting system at the initial design stage of shafting arrangement. The design values for each vertical static bearing load and pressure calculated by theoretical design methodologies of the finite element method (FEM) and the three moment equation method (TMEM) were compared with the shipyard original design values for the same design case of propulsion shafting system. The design deviation of the vertical static bearing from the shipyard original design values was determined in order to decide which design methodology (TMEM or FEM) would be adopted and developed for further numerical algorithm design on shafting alignment optimization. According to the obtained results, both the FEM and the TMEM theoretical design accuracy and reliability were well matched with the shipyard original design values. In addition, the TMEM design results for each static bearing load and pressure proved to be more close to the shipyard original design values

spl(2,1) dynamical supersymmetry and suppression of ferromagnetism in flat band double-exchange models

The low energy spectrum of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a N-site complete graph extended with on-site repulsion is obtained from the underlying spl(2,1) algebra properties in the strong coupling limit. The ferromagnetic ground state is realized for 1 and N+1 electrons only. We identify the large density of states to be responsible for the suppression of the ferromagnetic state and argue that a similar situation is encountered in the Kagome, pyrochlore, and other lattices with flat bands in their one-particle density of states.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur

Trans Politics, Social Change, and Justice

On May 6 and 7, 2005, Trans Politics, Social Change, and Justice brought over four hundred trans people and allies into a single building. A feeling of electricity was everywhere. Not because this was the first trans conference — it was not. Nor was it the largest. What participants felt came from the fact that the real lives of trans people were being addressed by trans people. For a time, the ground had shifted; the complex webs of institutions and politics that surround the lives of people everywhere were being addressed primarily from the perspective of transgender peoples and their communities

Self-consistent approach for the quantum confined Stark effect in shallow quantum wells

A computationally efficient, self-consistent complex scaling approach to calculating characteristics of excitons in an external electric field in quantum wells is introduced. The method allows one to extract the resonance position as well as the field-induced broadening for the exciton resonance. For the case of strong confinement the trial function is represented in factorized form. The corresponding coupled self-consistent equations, which include the effective complex potentials, are obtained. The method is applied to the shallow quantum well. It is shown that in this case the real part of the effective exciton potential is insensitive to changes of external electric field up to the ionization threshold, while the imaginary part has non-analytical field dependence and small for moderate electric fields. This allows one to express the exciton quasi-energy at some field through the renormalized expression for the zero-field bound state.Comment: 13 pages, RevTeX4, 6 figure

When I rolled out of bed at 4 am on April 20 to make the trip to New York for Futures of the Field: Building LGBT Studies into the 21st Century University, the idea of discussing institutionalization was less than appealing. In a time of staff cutbacks, increasing courseloads and notoriously poor job markets, going back to sleep seemed a much better idea

This research is motivated by the case of human rights violations during the massacre witches in Banyuwangi in 1998. The central government that when it is exposed to many issues require a diversion issues in other areas to divert attention began when the reform era turn of the new order of oligarchs capitalist towards a democratic state. Therefore, this study will analyze the motives brutality of human rights violations that led to the massacre of the witches. The purpose of this research that examines how government as the dominant party using a various social control to a group that dominated the society. This study used qualitative methods - descriptive. The subjects were the victims and the community leaders who concern about the problems of this massacre case. By using the theory of hegemony to explore the phenomenon of the role of the state to a case that comes to the human rights violations like this. Namely data collection techniques with direct observation to the test site and the literature to comparison be empirical research results also snowball technique purposive sampling. Based on the analysis of cases of human rights violations during the massacre witches in Banyuwangi 1998 as a whole is a game the government on the transfer issue. Turbulent political force people to accept an issue to distract him from the turmoil in the capital but did not go according to the destination. The lack of public understanding about the violation of Human Rights to make the case - a case that concerned have not or even cannot be resolved properly, including cases of human rights violations in Banyuwangi 1998's
