Transcriptionally inactive oocyte-type 5S RNA genes of Xenopus laevis are complexed with TFIIIA in vitro
An extract from whole oocytes of Xenopus laevis was shown to transcribe somatic-type 5S RNA genes approximately 100-fold more efficiently than oocyte-type 5S RNA genes. This preference was at least 10-fold greater than the preference seen upon microinjection of 5S RNA genes into oocyte nuclei or upon in vitro transcription in an oocyte nuclear extract. The approximately 100-fold transcriptional bias in favor of the somatic-type 5S RNA genes observed in vitro in the whole oocyte extract was similar to the transcriptional bias observed in developing Xenopus embryos. We also showed that in the whole oocyte extract, a promoter-binding protein required for 5S RNA gene transcription, TFIIIA, was bound both to the actively transcribed somatic-type 5S RNA gene and to the largely inactive oocyte-type 5S RNA genes. These findings suggest that the mechanism for the differential expression of 5S RNA genes during Xenopus development does not involve differential binding of TFIIIA to 5S RNA genes
Obscuration of the Parsec Scale Jets in the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708
We present results of VLA and VLBA observations of the 1.420 GHz neutral
hydrogen absorption associated with the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708
(z=0.101). We find significant structure in the gas on parsec scales. The peak
column density in the HI (N_HI~2.2x10^23 cm^-2 (T_s/8000K)) occurs toward the
center of activity of the source, as does the highest velocity dispersion
(FWHM~350 \kms). In addition, we find that the continuum spectra of the various
radio components associated with these jets strongly indicate free-free
absorption. This effect is particularly pronounced toward the core and inner
components of the receding jet, suggesting the presence of a screen local to

A detailed summary of the data used, analyses performed, modeling techniques employed, and results obtained in the course of the 1990 Epoch World Magnetic Modeling effort are given. Also, use and limitations of the GEOMAG algorithm are presented. Charts and tables related to the 1990 World Magnetic Model (WMM-90) for the Earth's main field and secular variation in Mercator and polar stereographic projections are presented along with useful tables of several magnetic field components and their secular variation on a 5-degree worldwide grid
A Flaring Megamaser in Mrk 348
We report new observations of the H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk
348. Following our initial detection in 2000 March using the Effelsberg 100 m
telescope, re-analysis of previous data on this source indicates that the maser
was present but only marginally detectable in late 1997. Monitoring through
late 2000 shows that the maser has again decreased to its original level. The
H2O line is redshifted by ~130 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity, is
extremely broad, with a FWHM of 130 km/s, and has no detectable high velocity
components within 1500 km/s on either side of the strong line. Followup VLBA
observations show that the maser emission emanates entirely from a region >0.25

Thinking beyond the hybrid:âactually-existingâ cities âafter neoliberalismâ in Boyle <i>et al.</i>
In their article, âThe spatialities of actually existing neoliberalism in Glasgow, 1977 to presentâ, Mark Boyle, Christopher McWilliams and Gareth Rice (2008) usefully problematise our current understanding of neoliberal urbanism. Our response is aimed at developing a sympathetic but critical approach to Boyle et al's understanding of neoliberal urbanism as illustrated by the Glasgow example. In particular, the counterposing by Boyle et al of a 'hybrid, mutant' model to a 'pure' model of neoliberalism for us misrepresents existing models of neoliberalism as a perfectly finished object rather than a roughly mottled process. That they do not identify any âpureâ model leads them to create a straw construct against which they can claim a more sophisticated, refined approach to the messiness of neoliberal urbanism. In contrast, we view neoliberalism as a contested and unstable response to accumulation crises at various scales of analysis
The concept of strong and weak virtual reality
We approach the virtual reality phenomenon by studying its relationship to
set theory, and we investigate the case where this is done using the
wellfoundedness property of sets. Our hypothesis is that non-wellfounded sets
(hypersets) give rise to a different quality of virtual reality than do
familiar wellfounded sets. We initially provide an alternative approach to
virtual reality based on Sommerhoff's idea of first and second order
self-awareness; both categories of self-awareness are considered as necessary
conditions for consciousness in terms of higher cognitive functions. We then
introduce a representation of first and second order self-awareness through
sets, and assume that these sets, which we call events, originally form a
collection of wellfounded sets. Strong virtual reality characterizes virtual
reality environments which have the limited capacity to create only events
associated with wellfounded sets. In contrast, the more general concept of weak
virtual reality characterizes collections of virtual reality mediated events
altogether forming an entirety larger than any collection of wellfounded sets.
By giving reference to Aczel's hyperset theory we indicate that this definition
is not empty, because hypersets encompass wellfounded sets already. Moreover,
we argue that weak virtual reality could be realized in human history through
continued progress in computer technology. Finally, we reformulate our
characterization into a more general framework, and use Baltag's Structural
Theory of Sets (STS) to show that within this general hyperset theory

Modeled larval fish prey fields and growth rates help predict recruitment success of cod and anchovy in the North Sea
Abstract. We introduce a new, coupled modeling approach for simulating ecosystem-wide patterns in larval fish foraging and growth. An application of the method reveals how interplay between temperature and plankton dynamics during 1970-2009 impacted a cold-water species (Atlantic cod Gadus morhua) and a warm-water species (European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus) in the North Sea. Larval fish growth rates were estimated by coupling models depicting traitbased foraging and bioenergetics of individuals, spatiotemporal changes in their prey field, and the biogeochemistry and hydrodynamics of the region. The biomass composition of modeled prey fields varied from 89% nano-, 10% micro-, and 1% mesoplankton to 15% nano-, 20% micro-, and 65% mesoplankton. The mean slope of the normalized biomass size spectrum was near -1.2, consistent with theoretical and empirical estimates. Median larval fish growth rates peaked in June for cod (24% d(-1)) and in July for anchovy (17% d(-1)). Insufficient prey resources played a substantial role in limiting the growth rates of cod larvae. Anchovy were consistently limited by cold temperatures. Faster median larval growth during specific months was significantly (p < 0.05) positively associated with detrended (i.e. higher than expected) juvenile recruitment indices in cod (rank correlation Kendall's tau = 22%) and anchovy (tau = 42%). For cod, the most predictive month was February, which was also when food limitation was most prevalent. The continued development of modeling tools based on first principles can help further a mechanistic understanding of how changes in the environment affect the productivity of living marine resources
Measurement of the ÎS=-ÎQ Amplitude from K_(e3)^0 Decay
We have measured the time distribution of the Ï^+e^-Îœ and Ï^-e^+Îœ modes from initial K^0's in a spark-chamber experiment performed at the Bevatron. From 1079 events between 0.2 and 7 K_S^0 lifetime, we find ReX=-0.069±0.036, ImX=+0.108_(-0.074)^(+0.092). This result is consistent with X=0 (relative probability = 0.25), but more than 4 standard deviations from the existing world average, +0.14 -0.13i
