    Life cycle energy and carbon analysis of a road-safety barrier produced using recycled tire rubber

    Increasing end-of-life material recovery and its application in new products is essential to reduce resource consumption. This paper assesses the cradle-to-gate life cycle energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of a new road safety barrier product to be installed around guardrails’ poles. To analyze the potential life cycle benefit of incorporating recycled materials, a base case product A, produced with conventional virgin synthetic rubber and polypropylene (PP), was compared with two equivalent alternatives under study: B (using recycled end-of-life tire rubber granulate (TRG) and PP), and C (using TRG and recycled polypropylene). The results show that the incorporation of recycled TRG has a positive effect in primary energy and carbon emissions. Product B presents less 38% CO2 emissions and 47% non-renewable primary energy than product A. The combination of TRG and recycled polypropylene (C), presents even more benefits: less 69% CO2 and 86% nonrenewable primary energy than A. Supply chain processes and material production have much higher impacts than the product manufacturing (e.g. product molding only represents 5% of the primary energy of product A).     Effect on gastric function and symptoms of drinking wine, black tea, or schnapps with a Swiss cheese fondue: randomised controlled crossover trial

    OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of drinking white wine or black tea with Swiss cheese fondue followed by a shot of cherry schnapps on gastric emptying, appetite, and abdominal symptoms. DESIGN: Randomised controlled crossover study. PARTICIPANTS: 20 healthy adults (14 men) aged 23-58. INTERVENTIONS: Cheese fondue (3260 kJ, 32% fat) labelled with 150 mg sodium (13)Carbon-octanoate was consumed with 300 ml of white wine (13%, 40 g alcohol) or black tea in randomised order, followed by 20 ml schnapps (40%, 8 g alcohol) or water in randomised order. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cumulative percentage dose of (13)C substrate recovered over four hours (higher values indicate faster gastric emptying) and appetite and dyspeptic symptoms (visual analogue scales). RESULTS: Gastric emptying was significantly faster when fondue was consumed with tea or water than with wine or schnapps (cumulative percentage dose of (13)C recovered 18.1%, 95% confidence interval 15.2% to 20.9% v 7.4%, 4.6% to 10.3%; P<0.001). An inverse dose-response relation between alcohol intake and gastric emptying was evident. Appetite was similar with consumption of wine or tea (difference 0.11, -0.12 to 0.34; P=0.35), but reduced if both wine and schnapps were consumed (difference -0.40, -0.01 to -0.79; P<0.046). No difference in dyspeptic symptoms was present. CONCLUSIONS: Gastric emptying after a Swiss cheese fondue is noticeably slower and appetite suppressed if consumed with higher doses of alcohol.     Dual Microsporidial Infection Due to Vittaforma corneae and Encephalitozoon hellem in a Patient with AIDS

    A 46-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-infected Swiss citizen living in Tanzania presented with respiratory, abdominal, and urogenital complaints. Microsporidial spores were isolated from urine and a sinunasal aspirate and were propagated in MRC-5 cell cultures. Western blot analysis and riboprinting identified the sinunasal isolate as Encephalitozoon hellem. Electron microscopic investigation of the urine isolate revealed spores with diplokaryotic nuclei and five to six isofilar coils of the polar tube and sporonts with two or three diplokarya. All stages were enveloped by two membranes, corresponding to a cisterna of host endoplasmic reticulum studded with ribosomes. These characteristics have been described for the genus Vittaforma. Western blot analysis of this isolate revealed a banding pattern identical to that of the Vittaforma corneae reference isolate. Part of the small subunit rRNA gene was amplified, sequenced (239 base pairs), and found to be identical to that of V. corneae. This is the second isolation of V. corneae and the first description of urinary tract infection due to V. corneae in a patient with AID

    Incidence of gallbladder lithiasis after ceftriaxone treatment

    Ceftriaxone has potent activity against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. While it is eliminated mainly by the kidney, 10-20% of the drug is eliminated in the bile and ceftriaxone salt precipitates have been described in the gallbladder of animals dosed with ceftriaxone. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the incidence of biliary lithiasis 6 and 12 months after treatment with ceftriaxone and to compare it with that in patients treated with amoxycillin/clavulanate. Biliary ultrasonography was performed at the start of treatment, at 6 months and at 12 months after the beginning of the study. One hundred patients were randomized and 74 were evaluable: 34 were given amoxycillin/clavulanate, 40 ceftriaxone. Gallbladder lithiasis developed in one patient 12 months after the amoxycillin/clavulanate treatment and in none in the ceftriaxone treatment arm. Biliary precipitate during ceftriaxone treatment was not looked for because this phenomenon was not known at the beginning of the study, but gallbladder precipitation that was seen in two patients given ceftriaxone during and at the end of treatment, respectively, resolved spontaneously.     Operationally meaningful representations of physical systems in neural networks

    To make progress in science, we often build abstract representations of physical systems that meaningfully encode information about the systems. The representations learnt by most current machine learning techniques reflect statistical structure present in the training data; however, these methods do not allow us to specify explicit and operationally meaningful requirements on the representation. Here, we present a neural network architecture based on the notion that agents dealing with different aspects of a physical system should be able to communicate relevant information as efficiently as possible to one another. This produces representations that separate different parameters which are useful for making statements about the physical system in different experimental settings. We present examples involving both classical and quantum physics. For instance, our architecture finds a compact representation of an arbitrary two-qubit system that separates local parameters from parameters describing quantum correlations. We further show that this method can be combined with reinforcement learning to enable representation learning within interactive scenarios where agents need to explore experimental settings to identify relevant variables.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figure

    Nebulized Bacteriophages for Prophylaxis of Experimental Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Due to Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

    OBJECTIVES There is a need for alternative strategies to combat and prevent antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Here, we assessed the potential for bacteriophage prophylaxis in the context of experimental ventilator-associated pneumonia due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in rats. DESIGN Nebulized phages (aerophages) were delivered to the lungs of rats using a modified vibrating mesh aerosol drug delivery system. Animals were intubated and ventilated for 4 hours, at which point they were infected with methicillin-resistant S. aureus strain AW7 via the endotracheal tube, extubated, and then monitored for 96 hours. SETTING Ventilator-associated pneumonia. SUBJECTS Male Wistar rats. INTERVENTIONS A single application of aerophages prior to ventilation at one of two concentrations (~1010 plaque forming units/mL or ~1011 plaque forming units/mL). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS 1) Animal survival at 96 hours, 2) enumeration of bacteria and phages in the lungs and spleen, and 3) lung tissue histopathology. Animals that received aerophages prior to ventilation and methicillin-resistant S. aureus challenge showed a higher survival rate compared with untreated controls (60% for animals that received 3 Ă— 10 plaque forming units; 70% for animals that received 3 Ă— 10 plaque forming units; 0% for controls; p < 0.01 for each treatment versus untreated). Surviving animals that received aerophage prophylaxis had fewer methicillin-resistant S. aureus in the lungs compared with untreated control animals that succumbed to pneumonia (1.6 Ă— 10 colony forming units/g vs 8.0 Ă— 10; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Prophylactically administered nebulized bacteriophages reduced lung bacterial burdens and improved survival of methicillin-resistant S. aureus infected rats, underscoring its potential in the context of ventilator-associated pneumonia
