    A simpler and more efficient algorithm for the next-to-shortest path problem

    Given an undirected graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) with positive edge lengths and two vertices ss and tt, the next-to-shortest path problem is to find an stst-path which length is minimum amongst all stst-paths strictly longer than the shortest path length. In this paper we show that the problem can be solved in linear time if the distances from ss and tt to all other vertices are given. Particularly our new algorithm runs in O(VlogV+E)O(|V|\log |V|+|E|) time for general graphs, which improves the previous result of O(V2)O(|V|^2) time for sparse graphs, and takes only linear time for unweighted graphs, planar graphs, and graphs with positive integer edge lengths.Comment: Partial result appeared in COCOA201

    Surface states and Rashba-type spin polarization in antiferromagnetic MnBi2_2Te4_4

    The layered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi2_2Te4_4 has been predicted to combine the band ordering of archetypical topological insulators such as Bi2_2Te3_3 with the magnetism of Mn, making this material a viable candidate for the realization of various magnetic topological states. We have systematically investigated the surface electronic structure of MnBi2_2Te4_4(0001) single crystals by use of spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In line with theoretical predictions, the results reveal a surface state in the bulk band gap and they provide evidence for the influence of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling on the surface electronic structure.Comment: Revised versio

    The Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey Project Stellar Variability. II. Detection of 15 Variable Stars

    The Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS) project has collected more than a billion photometric measurements since 2005 January. These sky survey data—covering timescales from a fraction of a second to a few hundred days—are a useful source to study stellar variability. A total of 167 star fields, mostly along the ecliptic plane, have been selected for photometric monitoring with the TAOS telescopes. This paper presents our initial analysis of a search for periodic variable stars from the time-series TAOS data on one particular TAOS field, No. 151 (R.A. = 17^(h)30^(m)6^(s).7, decl. = 27°17'30", J2000), which had been observed over 47 epochs in 2005. A total of 81 candidate variables are identified in the 3 deg^2 field, with magnitudes in the range 8 < R < 16. On the basis of the periodicity and shape of the light curves, 29 variables, 15 of which were previously unknown, are classified as RR Lyrae, Cepheid, δ Scuti, SX Phonencis, semi-regular, and eclipsing binaries

    The Qatari mangroves of Al-Khor are being increasingly exposed to a wide variety of anthropogenic pollutants due to land reclamation and urban expansion. In this study, we evaluated the lethal and genotoxic effects of methylmercury, trace metals, and organotins, assessing mortality and aneuploidy levels (abnormal number of chromosomes) in the endemic shrimp Palaemon khori under laboratory conditions. In the experimental design, two different concentrations were used for each family of contaminant (single or combined): an environmental concentration equivalent to the maximum value reported in the environment and a value ten times higher, for a period of eight weeks. Survival decreased significantly when pollutants were administrated in combination, even at environmental concentrations (as shown by Cox proportional hazards ratios): similar levels of mortality would be reached by individual type of pollutants only at ten times the environmental concentration. This critical result, under controlled lab conditions, highlights the importance of monitoring mixtures of contaminant types over single ones in the marine environment. Aneuploidy was reported in all treatments and control ranging from 5% to 19% at week four and from 7% to 21% at week eight. All treatments presented significantly higher aneuploidy levels when compared to the control. However, no significant difference was observed between the two time periods, even though 30% of the treatments could not be assessed at week eight, as not enough animals were still alive. In conclusion, the use of endemic species should be considered a valuable tool to determine local perturbations, representing a regional bioindicator of multiple environmental stressors from the initial stages of contamination

    A Close Binary Star Resolved from Occultation by 87 Sylvia

    The star BD+29 1748 was resolved to be a close binary from its occultation by the asteroid 87 Sylvia on 2006 December 18 UT. Four telescopes were used to observe this event at two sites separated by some 80 km apart. Two flux drops were observed at one site, whereas only one flux drop was detected at the other. From the long-term variation of Sylvia, we inferred the probable shape of the shadow during the occultation, and this in turn constrains the binary parameters: the two components of BD+29 1748 have a projected separation of 0.097" to 0.110" on the sky with a position angle 104 deg to 107 deg. The asteroid was clearly resolved with a size scale ranging from 130 to 290 km, as projected onto the occultation direction. Stars have been monitored photometrically at 4 Hz or 5 Hz to search for occultations by small (~3 km) Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs).     Reduction of CO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e By a Masked Two-Coordinate Cobalt(I) Complex and Characterization of a Proposed Oxodicobalt(II) Intermediate

    Fixation and chemical reduction of CO2 are important for utilization of this abundant resource, and understanding the detailed mechanism of C-O cleavage is needed for rational development of CO2 reduction methods. Here, we describe a detailed analysis of the mechanism of the reaction of a masked two-coordinate cobalt(i) complex, LtBuCo (where LtBu = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]hept-4-yl), with CO2, which yields two products of C-O cleavage, the cobalt(i) monocarbonyl complex LtBuCo(CO) and the dicobalt(ii) carbonate complex (LtBuCo)2(μ-CO3). Kinetic studies and computations show that the κN,η6-arene isomer of LtBuCo rearranges to the κ2N,N′ binding mode prior to binding of CO2, which contrasts with the mechanism of binding of other substrates to LtBuCo. Density functional theory (DFT) studies show that the only low-energy pathways for cleavage of CO2 proceed through bimetallic mechanisms, and DFT and highly correlated domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) calculations reveal the cooperative effects of the two metal centers during facile C-O bond rupture. A plausible intermediate in the reaction of CO2 with LtBuCo is the oxodicobalt(II) complex LtBuCoOCoLtBu, which has been independently synthesized through the reaction of LtBuCo with N2O. The rapid reaction of LtBuCoOCoLtBu with CO2 to form the carbonate product indicates that the oxo species is kinetically competent to be an intermediate during CO2 cleavage by LtBuCo. LtBuCoOCoLtBu is a novel example of a thoroughly characterized molecular cobalt-oxo complex where the cobalt ions are clearly in the +2 oxidation state. Its nucleophilic reactivity is a consequence of high charge localization on the μ-oxo ligand between two antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin cobalt(ii) centers, as characterized by DFT and multireference complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations

    Electromagnetic radiation emitted by the colliding beams is expected to play an important role at the next generation of high energy e^+ e^- linear collider(s).     The TAOS Project: Upper Bounds on the Population of Small KBOs and Tests of Models of Formation and Evolution of the Outer Solar System

    We have analyzed the first 3.75 years of data from TAOS, the Taiwanese American Occultation Survey. TAOS monitors bright stars to search for occultations by Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs). This dataset comprises 5e5 star-hours of multi-telescope photometric data taken at 4 or 5 Hz. No events consistent with KBO occultations were found in this dataset. We compute the number of events expected for the Kuiper Belt formation and evolution models of Pan & Sari (2005), Kenyon & Bromley (2004), Benavidez & Campo Bagatin (2009), and Fraser (2009). A comparison with the upper limits we derive from our data constrains the parameter space of these models. This is the first detailed comparison of models of the KBO size distribution with data from an occultation survey. Our results suggest that the KBO population is comprised of objects with low internal strength and that planetary migration played a role in the shaping of the size distribution.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, Aj submitte
