    We have recently observed the spectra of hydrogen hypochlorite and deuterium hypochlorite in the region 1-15μ as part of a general program of study of simple molecules. Since, so far as we are aware, no spectroscopic data has heretofore been reported on these substances, the preliminary results are of sufficient interest to be presented at this time

    Nonlinear evolution equations for degenerate transverse waves in anisotropic elastic solids

    Transverse elastic waves behave differently in nonlinear isotropic and anisotropic media. Quadratically nonlinear coupling in the evolution equations for wave amplitudes is not possible in isotropic solids, but such a coupling may occur for certain directions in anisotropic materials. We identify the expression responsible for the coupling and we derive coupled canonical evolution equations for transverse wave amplitudes in the case of two-fold and three-fold symmetry acoustic axes. We illustrate our considerations by examples for a cubic crystal.Comment: 4 page

    Surface-protein interactions on different stainless steel grades: effects of protein adsorption, surface changes and metal release

    Implantation using stainless steels (SS) is an example where an understanding of protein-induced metal release from SS is important when assessing potential toxicological risks. Here, the protein-induced metal release was investigated for austenitic (AISI 304, 310, and 316L), ferritic (AISI 430), and duplex (AISI 2205) grades in a phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4) solution containing either bovine serum albumin (BSA) or lysozyme (LSZ). The results show that both BSA and LSZ induce a significant enrichment of chromium in the surface oxide of all stainless steel grades. Both proteins induced an enhanced extent of released iron, chromium, nickel and manganese, very significant in the case of BSA (up to 40-fold increase), whereas both proteins reduced the corrosion resistance of SS, with the reverse situation for iron metal (reduced corrosion rates and reduced metal release in the presence of proteins). A full monolayer coverage is necessary to induce the effects observed.     A randomized controlled trial of the impact of body-worn camera activation on the outcomes of individual incidents

    Objectives Evaluate the impact of body-worn cameras (BWCs) on officer-initiated activity, arrests, use of force, and complaints. Methods We use instrumental variable analysis to examine the impact of BWC assignment and BWC activation on the outcomes of individual incidents through a randomized controlled trial of 436 officers in the Phoenix Police Department. Results Incidents involving BWC activations were associated with a lower likelihood of officer-initiated contacts and complaints, but a greater likelihood of arrests and use of force. BWC assignment alone was unrelated to arrests or complaints; however, incidents involving officers who were assigned and activated their BWC were significantly more likely to result in an arrest and less likely to result in a complaint. Conclusions Future researchers should account for BWC activation to better estimate the effects of BWCs on officer behavior. To maximize the effects of BWCs, police agencies should ensure that officers are complying with activation policies

    An electromagnetic shashlik calorimeter with longitudinal segmentation

    A novel technique for longitudinal segmentation of shashlik calorimeters has been tested in the CERN West Area beam facility. A 25 tower very fine samplings e.m. calorimeter has been built with vacuum photodiodes inserted in the first 8 radiation lengths to sample the initial development of the shower. Results concerning energy resolution, impact point reconstruction and electron/pion separation are reported.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure

    Logic, logical form and the disunity of truth

    Monists say that the nature of truth is invariant, whichever sentence you consider; pluralists say that the nature of truth varies between different sets of sentences. The orthodoxy is that logic and logical form favour monism: there must be a single property that is preserved in any valid inference; and any truth-functional complex must be true in the same way as its components. The orthodoxy, I argue, is mistaken. Logic and logical form impose only structural constraints on a metaphysics of truth. Monistic theories are not guaranteed to satisfy these constraints, and there is a pluralistic theory that does so
