    Checklist of serranid and epinephelid fishes (Perciformes: Serranidae & Epinephelidae) of India

    We provide an updated checklist of fishes of the families Serranidae and Epinephelidae reported or listed from India, along with photographs. A total of 120 fishes in this group are listed as occurring in India based on published literature, of which 25 require further confirmation and validation. We confirm here the presence of at least 95 species in 22 genera occurring in Indian marine waters. The majority of the species belong to the grouper genus Epinephelus (41%), followed by Pseudanthias (15%) and Cephalopholis (13%). Most species (92%) found in India have been assessed globally either as Data Deficient (DD) or Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Since information on groupers from India is limited, there is an urgent need to document the diversity, ecology, life history, population status, and fisheries status of this group of fishes from the country

    Children's unique experience of depression: Using a developmental approach to predict variation in symptomatology

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Current clinical knowledge suggests that children can have different types of depressive symptoms (irritability and aggression), but presents no theoretical basis for these differences. Using a developmental approach, the present study sought to test the relationship between developmental level (mental age) and expression of depressive symptoms. The primary hypothesis was that as children's mental age increased, so would the number of internalizing symptoms present.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Participants were 252 psychiatric inpatients aged 4 to 16 with a diagnosed depressive disorder. All children were diagnosed by trained clinicians using DSM criteria. Patients were predominantly male (61%) with varied ethnic backgrounds (Caucasian 54%; African American 22%; Hispanic 19%; Other 5%). Children were given an IQ test (KBIT or WISC) while within the hospital. Mental age was calculated by using the child's IQ score and chronological age. Four trained raters reviewed children's records for depressive symptoms as defined by the DSM-IV TR. Additionally, a ratio score was calculated to indicate the number of internalizing symptoms to total symptoms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mental age positively correlated (<it>r </it>= .51) with an internalizing total symptom ratio score and delineated between several individual symptoms. Mental age also predicted comorbidity with anxiety and conduct disorders. Children of a low mental age were more likely to be comorbid with conduct disorders, whereas children with a higher mental age presented more often with anxiety disorders. Gender was independently related to depressive symptoms, but minority status interacted with mental age.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of this study indicate that a developmental approach is useful in understanding children's depressive symptoms and has implications for both diagnosis and treatment of depression. If children experience depression differently, it follows that treatment options may also differ from that which is effective in adults.</p

In this study, the length–weight relationship and length–frequency-based population dynamics of this species, which are important prerequisites for effective fisheries management, were investigated for the first time based on specimens collected from the Mhadei River in the northern part of the Western Ghats. Estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were as follows: theoretical maximum length, L∞, 70.88 mm; growth coefficient, k, 1.50 year-1; and theoretical age at length 0, t0, –0.016 years. Natural mortality of P. setnai was higher than fishing mortality, and the present exploitation level (0.37) was less than 60% of the predicted maximum exploitation, suggesting that the species is not exploited to a level that is detrimental to the local population.Not Availabl

    Seismic performance evaluation of a recently developed magnetorheological damper : experimental investigation

    Magnetorheological (MR) dampers have the ability to mitigate natural hazards for structures due to their high energy dissipation features with low power demand. This feature has made the MR damper one of the most popular semiactive damping devices. The present work validates the performance of a single-story reinforced concrete (RC) frame using a reduced scale 10 kN capacity multiple coil MR damper that has recently been developed by the authors. To conduct this test, MR fluid is synthesized and the proposed multicoil MR damper was designed and fabricated. Three RC frames were cast and tested using a loading frame with a capacity of 50 kN. This frame was subjected to earthquake excitation with MR damper placed diagonally at 0 A current, 3 A current, and without MR damper for a better comparison. The comparative performance indicated the reductions in displacements, increase of forces, and changes in crack patterns. The proposed semiactive damper can, therefore, be used effectively as a seismic resilient device in reducing the structural responses in the regions of moderate to high seismicity

    Development of a multiple coil magneto-rheological smart damper to improve the seismic resilience of building structures

    The incremental research progress on Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper and its response motivated many researchers and engineers to focus on this topic in the last decade. Methods: MR damper is classified as a semi-active vibration controlling device owing to its mechanical simplicity, low power usage, large response reduction, perfect damping mechanism, good stability, quick reaction time and robust interface. Results: In the current investigation, experimental studies were performed for the design, development, and testing of a new type of MR damper. A proposed approach was adopted for the magnetic generation using multi-coils to produce more shear force in the flow gap. The study investigates time history responses of the proposed system under an array of strong ground motions at both element and structure levels. Numerical hybrid simulation using OpenSees has also been carried out on a building structure to show the effectiveness of the new device. Conclusion: The performance of the investigated structure equipped with the proposed system indicates a large reduction in displacement and an increase in damping force under major seismic events

    Not AvailableLength–weight relationship (LWR) was estimated for 12 elasmobranch species; five shark species, four species of rays and three species of guitar fishes from north-eastern Arabian Sea, India. Five major landing centres of Maharashtra were selected; Satpati (Lat. 19°43′15″N, Long. 72°42′00″E), Naigaon (Lat. 19°19′32″N, Long. 72°48′54″E), Versova (Lat. 19°08′33″N, Long. 72°48′11″E), New ferry Wharf (Lat. 18°57′29″N Long. 72°51′01″E) and Sassoon dock (Lat. 18°54′42″N, Long. 72°49′33″E). Samples were collected fortnightly during August 2016 to October 2017 from various gears; drift gill nets (Hung length 114–143 m and #100–270 mm) off Satpati coast at 35–50 m depth, dol nets (length 50–65 m and cod end # 30–69 mm) in Naigaon at 38–50 m depth and trawl (length 33–72 m and cod end # 17–32 mm) in Versova, New ferry Wharf and Sassoon dock operated at 20–50 m depth. Multiday fishing was carried out with 2–3 fishing trips in a month, each trip with duration of 7–13 days. Soaking time of gill net and dol net varied from 4 to 8 hr while each trawl haul lasted for 3–4 hr. Length–weight/Disc-width- weight relationship showed good fit with r2 values varying from 0.818 to 0.999. In addition to information on LWR, new maximum size for three species of elasmobranchs is reported in this paper.Not Availabl
