Black holes in extended gravity theories in Palatini formalism

We consider several physical scenarios where black holes within classical gravity theories including R2R^2 and Ricci-squared corrections and formulated \`a la Palatini can be analytically studied.Comment: 4 pages, contribution to the "Spanish Relativity Meeting in Portugal 2012 (Progress in Mathematical Relativity, Gravitation and Cosmology)", Springer Proceedings in Mathematics (to appear

The use of tethers for payload orbital transfer. Continuation of investigation of electrodynamic stabilization and control of long orbiting tethers, volume 2

    Get PDF
The SKYHOOK program was used to do simulations of two cases of the use of the tether for payload orbital transfer. The transport of a payload along the tether from a heavy lower platform to an upper launching platform is considered. A numerical example of the Shuttle launching a payload using an orbital tether facility is described

Classical Analog of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

    Get PDF
We present a classical analog for Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). In a system of just two coupled harmonic oscillators subject to a harmonic driving force we can reproduce the phenomenology observed in EIT. We describe a simple experiment performed with two linearly coupled RLC circuits which can be taught in an undergraduate laboratory class.Comment: 6 pages, two-column, 6 figures, submitted to the Am. Dirac fermions at the H point of graphite: Magneto-transmission studies

We report on far infrared magneto-transmission measurements on a thin graphite sample prepared by exfoliation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. In magnetic field, absorption lines exhibiting a blue-shift proportional to sqrtB are observed. This is a fingerprint for massless Dirac holes at the H point in bulk graphite. The Fermi velocity is found to be c*=1.02x10^6 m/s and the pseudogap at the H point is estimated to be below 10 meV. Although the holes behave to a first approximation as a strictly 2D gas of Dirac fermions, the full 3D band structure has to be taken into account to explain all the observed spectral features.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.
