High altitude balloon flights for detecting primary cosmic ray
Astronomy at sub-millimeter wavelengths
The first flight test of a gondola containing a Newtonian telescope with a 16 in. primary mirror is described. Bolometer tests were conducted along with gondola design studies, and changes were made in the mechanical system as a result. Parts of the system were rebuilt and tested, and it was found that the flight system had redundant data recording capabilities. In the total flight record, about 160 large signals were noted; about half of these appeared to have the correct shape for genuine signals, and the other were clearly noise spikes (they were large but the signal shape could not have been produced by the observation of a celestial object)

Instability Criteria for Steady Flows of a Perfect Fluid
An instability criterion based on the positivity of a Lyapunov-type exponent is used to study the stability of the Euler equations governing the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid. It is proved that any flow with exponential stretching of the fluid particles is unstable. In the case of an arbitrary axisymmetric steady integrable flow, a sufficient condition for instability is exhibited in terms of the curvature and the geodesic torsion of a stream line and the helicity of the flow.NSF DMS 9000137, DMS 9105688Mathematic
An approach to intersection theory on singular varieties using motivic complexes
We introduce techniques of Suslin, Voevodsky, and others into the study of
singular varieties. Our approach is modeled after Goresky-MacPherson
intersection homology. We provide a formulation of perversity cycle spaces
leading to perversity homology theory and a companion perversity cohomology
theory based upon generalized cocycle spaces. These theories lead to conditions
on pairs of cycles which can be intersected and a suitable equivalence relation
on cocycles/cycles enabling pairings on equivalence classes. We establish
suspension and splitting theorems, as well as a localization property. Some
examples of intersections on singular varieties are computed.Comment: revised version, to appear in Compositio Mathematic
General linear and functor cohomology over finite fields
In recent years, there has been considerable success in computing Ext-groups
of modular representations associated to the general linear group by relating
this problem to one of computing Ext-groups in functor categories. In this
paper, we extend our ability to make such Ext-group calculations by
establishing several fundamental results. Throughout this paper, we work over
fields of positive characteristic p.Comment: 66 pages, published version, abstract added in migratio
