    On the String Pair Creation in Dp-Dp' Brane System

    We address the bosonic string pair creation in a system of parallel Dp-Dp' (p<p') branes by applying the path integral formalism. We drive the string pair creation rate by calculating the one loop vacuum amplitude of the setup in presence of the background electric field defined over the Dp'-brane. It is pointed out that just the components of the electric field defined over the pp spatial directions (the common directions along which the both D-branes are extended) give rise to the pair creationComment: Accepted for publication in Mod.     Clinical and radiographic alterations in bilateral avascular necrosis of the femoral head following laser acupuncture: A case report

    Introduction: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is an increasingly common cause of musculoskeletal disability with unknown etiology. Traumatic and non-traumatic factors can be effective in its occurrence. About 50 of cases are bilateral. The underlying treatment is prosthetic replacement surgical procedure. Case Presentation: We report a case of bilateral AVN of femoral heads who was a candidate for prosthetic replacement surgery but improved significantly, using laser acupuncture. The patient was a 55-year-old woman with a diagnosis of bilateral osteonecrosis of the femoral head for five years. As the patient declined the surgical option, laser acupuncture was started for pain control. Regarding the signs of bilateral femoral head recovery (according to the MRI scan criteria), a total of 3 courses of laser acupuncture (each course was 20 sessions) with 2 months intervals was performed. Ten acupuncture points: Li4, Li11, St36, SP6, LIV3, GB4, GB5, GB6, GB13, GB14, GB20, GB30, GB31, GB34, were irradiated bilaterally using red 650 nm laser, 100 mW, 1505 Hz frequency, duty cycle 50 3 J/point and near infrared 810 nm laser, 100 mW, 1705 Hz frequency, duty cycle 50 3 J/point, for 2 minutes. The patient received 3 laser therapy courses. During the first-course, laser therapy was done every other day to reduce pain. For the second and third courses, according to pain decrease, therapy was done every week. Results: The results of the MRI scans and x-ray studies show progressive regeneration of the right femoral head from VI to B II and of the left from V to C II (based on the standard table of Pennsylvania). Conclusion: It seems that this procedure may be mentioned in future research projects, especially in cases with high risks of surgery. © 2018, Laser Application in Medical Sciences Research Center

    Social Media, Gender and the Mediatisation of War: Exploring the German Armed Forces’ Visual Representation of the Afghanistan Operation on Facebook

    Studies on the mediatisation of war point to attempts of governments to regulate the visual perspective of their involvements in armed conflict – the most notable example being the practice of ‘embedded reporting’ in Iraq and Afghanistan. This paper focuses on a different strategy of visual meaning-making, namely, the publication of images on social media by armed forces themselves. Specifically, we argue that the mediatisation of war literature could profit from an increased engagement with feminist research, both within Critical Security/Critical Military Studies and within Science and Technology Studies that highlight the close connection between masculinity, technology and control. The article examines the German military mission in Afghanistan as represented on the German armed forces’ official Facebook page. Germany constitutes an interesting, and largely neglected, case for the growing literature on the mediatisation of war: its strong antimilitarist political culture makes the representation of war particularly delicate. The paper examines specific representational patterns of Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan and discusses the implications which arise from what is placed inside the frame of visibility and what remains out of its view

    Effects of micro‐nano titania contents and maleic anhydride compatibilization on the mechanical performance of polylactide

    The first aim of this study was to compare influences of various contents of the micro- (200 nm) and nano (50 nm)-sized titania (TiO2) particles especially on the mechanical performance of the polylactide (PLA) biopolymer. Micro- and nano-composites were prepared by twin-screw extruder melt mixing, while the specimens were shaped by compression molding. Scanning electron microscope analyses and mechanical tests revealed that due to the most efficient uniform distribution in the matrix, the best improvements in the strength, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness values could be obtained either by using 5 wt% micro-TiO2 or by only 2 wt% nano-TiO2 particles. The second purpose of this study was to investigate influences of using maleic anhydride (MA)-grafted copolymer (PLA-g-MA) compatibilization on the performance of one nanocomposite composition. Due to the improved chemical interfacial adhesion, use of PLA-g-MA compatibilization for the specimen of PLA/2 wt% n-TiO2 composition resulted in the highest improvements in the mechanical performance of neat PLA. The improvements were 14% in tensile strength, 20% in flexural modulus, and as much as 67% in fracture toughness.
