Search for a Standard Model Higgs Boson in CMS via Vector Boson Fusion in the H->WW->l\nu l\nu Channel
We present the potential for discovering the Standard Model Higgs boson
produced by the vector-boson fusion mechanism. We considered the decay of Higgs
bosons into the W+W- final state, with both W-bosons subsequently decaying
leptonically. The main background is ttbar with one or more jets produced. This
study is based on a full simulation of the CMS detector, and up-to-date
reconstruction codes. The result is that a signal of 5 sigma significance can
be obtained with an integrated luminosity of 12-72 1/fb for Higgs boson masses
between 130-200 GeV. In addition, the major background can be measured directly
to 7% from the data with an integrated luminosity of 30 1/fb. In this study, we
also suggested a method to obtain information in Higgs mass using the
transverse mass distributions.Comment: 26 pages, 22 figure
Multiple Parton Interactions in Z+4j, W\pm W\pm +0/2j and W+ W- +2j production at the LHC
The expected rate for Multiple Parton Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is large.
This requires an estimate of their impact on all measurement foreseen at the
LHC. Conversely it provides new means of studying MPI at the LHC. In this paper
we examine the role of MPI at the LHC, with the design energy of 14 TeV, in - Z
production in association with four jets, - W\pm W\pm in association with zero
or two jets. -W+ W- in association with two jets. In all cases the vector
bosons are assumed to decay leptonically.
The MPI contribution to Z+4j is dominated by events with two jets with
balancing transverse momentum. It is possible to achieve a good signal to
background ratio, close to 20%, for MPI compared to Single Interaction
processes by selecting events with two jets with large separation in the
transverse plane. The corresponding statistical significance for a luminosity
of 1 inverse fb is about 6.9 for the mu+mu- channel alone.
The final state channel in which only two same-sign high transverse momentum
charged leptons are required and additional hard jets are vetoed is dominated
by MPI, with an expected yield of 2500 events with the full LHC luminosity.Comment: Accepted for publication in JHE

Measurement of double-differential cross sections for top quark pair production in pp collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] and impact on parton distribution functions.
Normalized double-differential cross sections for top quark pair ([Formula: see text]) production are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8[Formula: see text] with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7[Formula: see text]. The measurement is performed in the dilepton [Formula: see text] final state. The [Formula: see text] cross section is determined as a function of various pairs of observables characterizing the kinematics of the top quark and [Formula: see text] system. The data are compared to calculations using perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading and approximate next-to-next-to-leading orders. They are also compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement fixed-order computations with parton showers, hadronization, and multiple-parton interactions. Overall agreement is observed with the predictions, which is improved when the latest global sets of proton parton distribution functions are used. The inclusion of the measured [Formula: see text] cross sections in a fit of parametrized parton distribution functions is shown to have significant impact on the gluon distribution

A search for new phenomena in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] in final states with missing transverse momentum and at least one jet using the [Formula: see text] variable.
A search for new phenomena is performed in final states containing one or more jets and an imbalance in transverse momentum in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13[Formula: see text]. The analysed data sample, recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3[Formula: see text]. Several kinematic variables are employed to suppress the dominant background, multijet production, as well as to discriminate between other standard model and new physics processes. The search provides sensitivity to a broad range of new-physics models that yield a stable weakly interacting massive particle. The number of observed candidate events is found to agree with the expected contributions from standard model processes, and the result is interpreted in the mass parameter space of fourteen simplified supersymmetric models that assume the pair production of gluinos or squarks and a range of decay modes. For models that assume gluino pair production, masses up to 1575 and 975[Formula: see text] are excluded for gluinos and neutralinos, respectively. For models involving the pair production of top squarks and compressed mass spectra, top squark masses up to 400[Formula: see text] are excluded

Search for supersymmetry in hadronic final states with missing transverse energy using the variables αT and b-quark multiplicity in pp collisions at [Formula: see text].
An inclusive search for supersymmetric processes that produce final states with jets and missing transverse energy is performed in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 11.7 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In this search, a dimensionless kinematic variable, αT, is used to discriminate between events with genuine and misreconstructed missing transverse energy. The search is based on an examination of the number of reconstructed jets per event, the scalar sum of transverse energies of these jets, and the number of these jets identified as originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of events over the standard model expectation is found. Exclusion limits are set in the parameter space of simplified models, with a special emphasis on both compressed-spectrum scenarios and direct or gluino-induced production of third-generation squarks. For the case of gluino-mediated squark production, gluino masses up to 950-1125 GeV are excluded depending on the assumed model. For the direct pair-production of squarks, masses up to 450 GeV are excluded for a single light first- or second-generation squark, increasing to 600 GeV for bottom squarks
