    Microstructure and chemical composition of Roman orichalcum coins emitted after the monetary reform of Augustus (23 B.C.)

    A collection of ancient Roman orichalcum coins, i.e., a copper-zinc alloy, minted under the reigns from Caesar to Domitianus, have been characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). We studied, for the first time, coins emitted by Romans after the reforms of Augustus (23 B.C.) and Nero (63-64 A.D). These coins, consisting of asses, sestertii, dupondii and semisses, were analysed using non- and invasive analyses, aiming to explore microstructure, corrosive process and to acquire quantitative chemical analysis. The results revealed that the coins are characterized by porous external layers, which are affected by dezincification and decuprification processes. As pictured by the X-ray maps, the elemental distribution of Cu and Zn shows patterns of depletion that in some cases penetrate in deep up to 1 mm. The composition of the un-corroded nucleus is a Cu-Zn alloy containing up to 30% of Zn, typical of coins produced via cementation process

    Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation Acts in the DNA Demethylation of Mouse Primordial Germ Cells Also with DNA Damage-Independent Roles

    Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation regulates chromatin structure and transcription driving epigenetic events. In particular, Parp1 is able to directly influence DNA methylation patterns controlling transcription and activity of Dnmt1. Here, we show that ADP-ribose polymer levels and Parp1 expression are noticeably high in mouse primordial germ cells (PGCs) when the bulk of DNA demethylation occurs during germline epigenetic reprogramming in the embryo. Notably, Parp1 activity is stimulated in PGCs even before its participation in the DNA damage response associated with active DNA demethylation. We demonstrate that PARP inhibition impairs both genome-wide and locus-specific DNA methylation erasure in PGCs. Moreover, we evidence that impairment of PARP activity causes a significant reduction of expression of the gene coding for Tet1 hydroxylases involved in active DNA demethylation. Taken together these results demonstrate new and adjuvant roles of poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation during germline DNA demethylation and suggest its possible more general involvement in genome reprogramming

    High-resolution tracking in a GEM-Emulsion detector

    SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) is a beam dump experiment proposed at the CERN SPS aiming at the observation of long lived particles very weakly coupled with ordinary matter mostly produced in the decay of charmed hadrons. The beam dump facility of SHiP is also a copious factory of neutrinos of all three kinds and therefore a dedicated neutrino detector is foreseen in the SHiP apparatus. The neutrino detector exploits the Emulsion Cloud Chamber technique with a modular structure, alternating walls of target units and planes of electronic detectors providing the time stamp to the event. GEM detectors are one of the possible choices for this task. This paper reports the results of the first exposure to a muon beam at CERN of a new hybrid chamber, obtained by coupling a GEM chamber and an emulsion detector. Thanks to the micrometric accuracy of the emulsion detector, the position resolution of the GEM chamber as a function of the particle inclination was evaluated in two configurations, with and without the magnetic fiel

    Temporal response to harmonic driving in electroconvection

    The temporal evolution of the spatially periodic electroconvection (EC) patterns has been studied within the period of the driving ac voltage by monitoring the light intensity diffracted from the pattern. Measurements have been carried out on a variety of nematic systems, including those with negative dielectric and positive conductivity anisotropy, exhibiting "standard EC" (s-EC), those with both anisotropies negative exhibiting "non-standard EC" (ns-EC), as well as those with the two anisotropies positive. Theoretical predictions have been confirmed for stationary s-EC and ns-EC patterns. Transitions with Hopf bifurcation have also been studied. While traveling had no effect on the temporal evolution of dielectric s-EC, traveling conductive s-EC and ns-EC patterns exhibited a substantially altered temporal behavior with a dependence on the Hopf frequency. It has also been shown that in nematics with both anisotropies positive, the pattern develops and decays within an interval much shorter than the period, even at relatively large driving frequencies.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure

    Rapid optimization of stationary tokamak plasmas in RAPTOR: demonstration for the ITER hybrid scenario with neural network surrogate transport model QLKNN

    This work presents a fast and robust method for optimizing the stationary radial distribution of temperature, density and parallel current density in a tokamak plasma and its application to first-principle-based modeling of the ITER hybrid scenario. A new solver is implemented in the RAPTOR transport code, enabling direct evaluation of the stationary solution to which the radial plasma profiles evolve. Coupled to a neural network emulation of the quasi-linear gyrokinetic QuaLiKiz transport model (QLKNN-hyper-10D), a first-principle-based estimate of the stationary state of the core plasma can be found at unprecedented computational speed (typically a few seconds on standard hardware). The stationary state solver is then embedded in a numerical optimization scheme, allowing the optimization of tokamak plasma scenarios in only a few minutes. The proposed method is applied to investigate the performance of ITER hybrid scenarios at different values of total plasma current, plasma density and pedestal height and for different power contributions in a heating mix consisting of electron cyclotron and neutral beam heating. Optimizing the radial distribution of electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) deposition, the q profile is tailored to maximize the fusion gain Q, by maximizing the energy confinement predicted through the first-principles-based transport model, while satisfying q &gt; 1, avoiding sawtooth oscillations. It is found that optimal use of ECCD in ITER hybrid scenarios is to deposit power as close to the core as possible, while maintaining sufficient off-axis current drive to keep q above 1. Upper limits for the fusion gain Q are shown to be constrained either by minimum power requirements for the separatrix power flow to maintain H-mode or by minimum current drive requirements for q profile tailoring. Finally, it is shown that the ITER hybrid scenario operating window is significantly extended by an upgrade of the electron cyclotron power to 40 MW.</p

    We study the Bak-Sneppen model in the probabilistic framework of the Run Time Statistics (RTS). This model has attracted a large interest for its simplicity being a prototype for the whole class of models showing Self-Organized Criticality. The dynamics is characterized by a self-organization of almost all the species fitnesses above a non-trivial threshold value, and by a lack of spatial and temporal characteristic scales. This results in {\em avalanches} of activity power law distributed. In this letter we use the RTS approach to compute the value of xcx_c, the value of the avalanche exponent τ\tau and the asymptotic distribution of minimal fitnesses.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published on Physical Review Letter

    Human adipose-derived stromal cells transplantation prolongs reproductive lifespan on mouse models of mild and severe premature ovarian insufficiency

    Background Although recent studies have investigated the ability of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) to alleviate short-term ovarian damage in animal models of chemotherapy-induced Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), no data are available on reproductive lifespan recovery, especially in a severe POI condition. For this reason, we investigated the potential of MSCs isolated from human adipose tissue (hASCs), since they are easy to harvest and abundant, in ameliorating the length and performance of reproductive life in both mild and severe chemotherapy-induced murine POI models. Methods Mild and severe POI models were established by intraperitoneally administering a light (12 mg/kg busulfan + 120 mg/kg cyclophosphamide) or heavy (30 mg/kg busulfan + 120 mg/kg cyclophosphamide) dose of chemotherapy, respectively, in CD1 mice. In both cases, a week later, 1 × 106 hASCs were transplanted systemically through the tail vein. After four additional weeks, some females were sacrificed to collect ovaries for morphological evaluation. H&amp;E staining was performed to assess stroma alteration and to count follicle numbers; immunofluorescence staining for αSMA was used to analyse vascularization. Of the remaining females, some were mated after superovulation to collect 2-cell embryos in order to evaluate their pre-implantation developmental capacity in vitro, while others were naturally mated to monitor litters and reproductive lifespan length. F1 litters’ weight, ovaries and reproductive lifespan were also analysed. Results hASC transplantation alleviated ovarian weight loss and size decrease and reduced alterations on ovarian stroma and vasculature, concurrently preventing the progressive follicle stockpile depletion caused by chemotherapy. These effects were associated with the preservation of the oocyte competence to develop into blastocyst in vitro and, more interestingly, with a significant decrease of chemotherapy-induced POI features, like shortness of reproductive lifespan, reduced number of litters and longer time to plug (the latter only presented in the severe POI model). Conclusion Human ASC transplantation was able to significantly reduce all the alterations induced by the chemotherapeutic treatment, while improving oocyte quality and prolonging reproductive functions, thus counteracting infertility. These results, strengthened by the use of an outbred model, support the potential applications of hASCs in women with POI, nowadays mainly induced by anticancer therapies

    A model to explain angular distributions of J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays into ΛΛ\Lambda\overline{\Lambda} and Σ0Σ0\Sigma^0\overline{\Sigma}^0

    BESIII data show a particular angular distribution for the decay of the J/ψJ/\psi and ψ(2S)\psi(2S) mesons into the hyperons ΛΛ\Lambda\overline{\Lambda} and Σ0Σ0\Sigma^0\overline{\Sigma}^0. More in details the angular distribution of the decay ψ(2S)Σ0Σ0\psi(2S) \to \Sigma^0\overline{\Sigma}^0 exhibits an opposite trend with respect to that of the other three channels: J/ψΛΛJ/\psi \to \Lambda\overline{\Lambda}, J/ψΣ0Σ0J/\psi \to \Sigma^0\overline{\Sigma}^0 and ψ(2S)ΛΛ\psi(2S) \to \Lambda\overline{\Lambda}.
