From One Context to Another: How Business Models Emerge

    Get PDF
In this paper, we expose how managers within one industry leverage interorganizational collaborations to create a new business model. Based on an inductive case study of an automotive GPS navigation company, we develop an emergent theory of how organizations use interorganizational collaborations to develop new business models. Our preliminary findings suggest that organizations enact 3 practices: activation (clash between familiar and unfamiliar knowledge), blending (socially constructed projection of the future), and calibration (alignment of interests among partners). These practices enabled the co-creation of a pioneering business model involving four distinct but highly complementary partners. This study provides preliminary insights on a theory of business model innovation via interorganizational collaboration. More broadly, we help open up organization theory to a fresh conceptual lens—the business model—that highlights how organizations work and create value through collaboration

Mechanism for current saturation and energy dissipation in graphene transistors

From a combination of careful and detailed theoretical and experimental studies, we demonstrate that the Boltzmann theory including all scattering mechanisms gives an excellent account, with no adjustable parameters, of high electric field transport in single as well as double-oxide graphene transistors. We further show unambiguously that scattering from the substrate and superstrate surface optical (SO) phonons governs the high field transport and heat dissipation over a wide range of experimentally relevant parameters. Models that neglect SO phonons altogether or treat them in a simple phenomenological manner are inadequate. We outline possible strategies for achieving higher current and complete saturation in graphene devices.Comment: revtex, 5 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

Effect of winding harmonics on the asynchronous torque of a single-phase line start permanant-magnet motor

This paper presents an analytical method for calculating the effect of winding harmonics on the asynchronous torque of a single-phase line-start permanent-magnet motor. The method is an extension of earlier work, which combines symmetrical-component analysis with dq-axis theory to model the various components of forward and backward rotating fields. The effect of individual winding harmonics is brought out both theoretically and experimentally, by comparing calculated and measured torque/speed characteristics for a series of six motors with different distributions of turns in both the main and auxiliary windings

Structural validity of the MACI psychopathy and narcissism scales: Evidence of multidimensionality and implications for use in research and screening

This study investigated the psychometric properties and predictive validity of three self-report scales (the Psychopathy Content Scale, the Psychopathy-16 scale, and the Egotistic scale) derived from the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI) to screen for the presence of psychopathic and narcissistic personality characteristics. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed in a sample of 173 clinic-referred adolescents (ages 12-17), results from which suggested that these scales are multidimensional in nature. The Psychopathy Content Scale was best captured by a two-factor structure, with personality-based items loading on one factor and antisocial/impulsive behaviors loading on the second. The most parsimonious solution for the Psychopathy-16 scale was a three-factor model, characterized by callous and egocentric features on the first two factors and antisocial behaviors on the third. The Egotistic scale of the MACI was best represented by three factors, depicting features of self-confidence, exhibitionistic tendencies, and social conceit, respectively. Regression analyses supported the multidimensionality of these scales by showing divergent patterns of association with violent and nonviolent outcomes among the factors that composed the scales

Understanding Business Model Innovation from a Practitioner Perspective

    Get PDF
While business model innovations are critical to a company’s long-term survival, they are still poorly understood compared to other kinds of innovations. This paper investigates prior research and reframes business model innovation through a practitioner lens. Reporting on a content analysis of interviews with CEOs of small and medium enterprises in the technology industry, this research investigates their definition of business model innovation. This research intends to contribute to a better understanding of the meaning of business model innovation from a practitioners’ perspective. These findings open new directions for theory development and empirical studies in the business model and innovation management literature

Multi-sensor Cloud Retrieval Simulator and Remote Sensing from Model Parameters

In this paper we describe a general procedure for calculating synthetic sensor radiances from variable output from a global atmospheric forecast model. In order to take proper account of the discrepancies between model resolution and sensor footprint, the algorithm takes explicit account of the model subgrid variability, in particular its description of the probability density function of total water (vapor and cloud condensate.) The simulated sensor radiances are then substituted into an operational remote sensing algorithm processing chain to produce a variety of remote sensing products that would normally be produced from actual sensor output. This output can then be used for a wide variety of purposes such as model parameter verification, remote sensing algorithm validation, testing of new retrieval methods and future sensor studies. We show a specific implementation using the GEOS-5 model, the MODIS instrument and the MODIS Adaptive Processing System (MODAPS) Data Collection 5.1 operational remote sensing cloud algorithm processing chain (including the cloud mask, cloud top properties and cloud optical and microphysical properties products). We focus on clouds because they are very important to model development and improvement
