    Study of advanced composite structural design concepts for an arrow wing supersonic cruise configuration

    Based on estimated graphite and boron fiber properties, allowable stresses and strains were established for advanced composite materials. Stiffened panel and conventional sandwich panel concepts were designed and analyzed, using graphite/polyimide and boron/polyimide materials. The conventional sandwich panel was elected as the structural concept for the modified wing structure. Upper and lower surface panels of the arrow wing structure were then redesigned, using high strength graphite/polyimide sandwich panels, retaining the titanium spars and ribs from the prior study. The ATLAS integrated analysis and design system was used for stress analysis and automated resizing of surface panels. Flutter analysis of the hybrid structure showed a significant decrease in flutter speed relative to the titanium wing design. The flutter speed was increased to that of the titanium design by selective increase in laminate thickness and by using graphite fibers with properties intermediate between high strength and high modulus values

    Transform methods for precision continuum and control models of flexible space structures

    An open loop optimal control algorithm is developed for general flexible structures, based on Laplace transform methods. A distributed parameter model of the structure is first presented, followed by a derivation of the optimal control algorithm. The control inputs are expressed in terms of their Fourier series expansions, so that a numerical solution can be easily obtained. The algorithm deals directly with the transcendental transfer functions from control inputs to outputs of interest, and structural deformation penalties, as well as penalties on control effort, are included in the formulation. The algorithm is applied to several structures of increasing complexity to show its generality

    Continuously observing a dynamically decoupled spin-1 quantum gas

    We continuously observe dynamical decoupling in a spin-1 quantum gas using a weak optical measurement of spin precession. Continuous dynamical decoupling aims to dramatically modify the character and energy spectrum of spin states to render them insensitive to parasitic fluctuations. Continuous observation measures this new spectrum in a single-preparation of the quantum gas. The measured time-series contains seven tones, which spectrogram analysis parses as splittings, coherences, and coupling strengths between the decoupled states in real-time. With this we locate a regime where a transition between two states is decoupled from magnetic field instabilities up to fourth order, complementary to the parallel work at higher fields by Trypogeorgos et al. (arXiv:1706.07876). The decoupled microscale quantum gas offers magnetic sensitivity in a tunable band, persistent over many milliseconds: the length scales, frequencies, and durations relevant to many applications, including sensing biomagnetic phenomena such as neural spike trains.Comment: 5+ pages, 4 figures, 1 table; revised citation of Trypogeorgos et al.     Progress in predictive design capabilities for external heat transfer to turbine vanes was summarized. A two dimensional linear cascade (previously used to obtain vane surface heat transfer distributions on nonfilm cooled airfoils) was used to examine the effect of leading edge shower head film cooling on downstream heat transfer. The data were used to develop and evaluate analytical models. Modifications to the two dimensional boundary layer model are described. The results were used to formulate and test an effective viscosity model capable of predicting heat transfer phenomena downstream of the leading edge film cooling array on both the suction and pressure surfaces, with and without mass injection

    Image lag optimisation in a 4T CMOS image sensor for the JANUS camera on ESA's JUICE mission to Jupiter

    The CIS115, the imager selected for the JANUS camera on ESA’s JUICE mission to Jupiter, is a Four Transistor (4T) CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) fabricated in a 0.18 µm process. 4T CIS (like the CIS115) transfer photo generated charge collected in the pinned photodiode (PPD) to the sense node (SN) through the Transfer Gate (TG). These regions are held at different potentials and charge is transferred from the potential well under PPD to the potential well under the FD through a voltage pulse applied to the TG. Incomplete transfer of this charge can result in image lag, where signal in previous frames can manifest itself in subsequent frames, often appearing as ghosted images in successive readouts. This can seriously affect image quality in scientific instruments and must be minimised. This is important in the JANUS camera, where image quality is essential to help JUICE meet its scientific objectives. This paper presents two techniques to minimise image lag within the CIS115. An analysis of the optimal voltage for the transfer gate voltage is detailed where optimisation of this TG “ON” voltage has shown to minimise image lag in both an engineering model and gamma and proton irradiated devices. Secondly, a new readout method of the CIS115 is described, where following standard image integration, the PPD is biased to the reset voltage level (VRESET) through the transfer gate to empty charge on the PPD and has shown to reduce image lag in the CIS115

    Analog tree-organized multiplexer

    An analog tree-organized multiplexer (ATOM) which is intended for use in the telemetry system of an interplanetary spacecraft is designed. The ATOM will be fabricated by a monolithic, dielectric isolation process, and will contain silicon junction field effect transistors (JFET) as the active elements. The effect of the radiation environment on the performance of the ATOM is analyzed. The result indicates that the expected radiation environment will cause only minor changes in the preradiation characteristics of ATOM. The JFET in the ATOM is designed to meet the electrical requirements when fabricated by either the double poly-dielectric isolation process or the raised dielectric isolation process. The effect of the heat treatment required for the dielectric isolation process on the diffusion profile of the JFET is described. The layout of the ATOM circuit for fabrication by either the double poly or raised dielectric isolation process is also given

    An order (n) algorithm for the dynamics simulation of robotic systems

    The formulation of an Order (n) algorithm for DISCOS (Dynamics Interaction Simulation of Controls and Structures), which is an industry-standard software package for simulation and analysis of flexible multibody systems is presented. For systems involving many bodies, the new Order (n) version of DISCOS is much faster than the current version. Results of the experimental validation of the dynamics software are also presented. The experiment is carried out on a seven-joint robot arm at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The algorithm used in the current version of DISCOS requires the inverse of a matrix whose dimension is equal to the number of constraints in the system. Generally, the number of constraints in a system is roughly proportional to the number of bodies in the system, and matrix inversion requires O(p exp 3) operations, where p is the dimension of the matrix. The current version of DISCOS is therefore considered an Order (n exp 3) algorithm. In contrast, the Order (n) algorithm requires inversion of matrices which are small, and the number of matrices to be inverted increases only linearly with the number of bodies. The newly-developed Order (n) DISCOS is currently capable of handling chain and tree topologies as well as multiple closed loops. Continuing development will extend the capability of the software to deal with typical robotics applications such as put-and-place, multi-arm hand-off and surface sliding
