    Testosterone Trajectories and Reference Ranges in a Large Longitudinal Sample of Male Adolescents

    Pubertal dynamics plays an important role in physical and psychological development of children and adolescents. We aim to provide reference ranges of plasma testosterone in a large longitudinal sample. Furthermore, we describe a measure of testosterone trajectories during adolescence that can be used in future investigations of development.We carried out longitudinal measurements of plasma testosterone in 2,216 samples obtained from 513 males (9 to 17 years of age) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. We used integration of a model fitted to each participant's testosterone trajectory to calculate a measure of average exposure to testosterone over adolescence. We pooled these data with corresponding values reported in the literature to provide a reference range of testosterone levels in males between the ages of 6 and 19 years.The average values of total testosterone in the ALSPAC sample range from 0.82 nmol/L (Standard Deviation [SD]: 0.09) at 9 years of age to 16.5 (SD: 2.65) nmol/L at 17 years of age; these values are congruent with other reports in the literature. The average exposure to testosterone is associated with different features of testosterone trajectories such as Peak Testosterone Change, Age at Peak Testosterone Change, and Testosterone at 17 years of age as well as the timing of the growth spurt during puberty.The average exposure to testosterone is a useful measure for future investigations using testosterone trajectories to examine pubertal dynamics

    A systematic review of parent and family functioning in pediatric solid organ transplant populations

    The process of pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT) places new and increased stressors on patients and family members. Measures of family functioning may predict psychological and health outcomes for pediatric patients and their families, and provide opportunity for targeted intervention. This systematic review investigated parent and family functioning and factors associated with poorer functioning in the pediatric SOT population. Thirty‐seven studies were identified and reviewed. Studies featured a range of organ populations (eg, heart, liver, kidney, lung, intestine) at various stages in the transplant process. Findings highlighted that parents of pediatric SOT populations commonly report increased stress and mental health symptoms, including posttraumatic stress disorder. Pediatric SOT is also associated with increased family stress and burden throughout the transplant process. Measures of parent and family functioning were associated with several important health‐related factors, such as medication adherence, readiness for discharge, and number of hospitalizations.     Educational needs in families of pediatric liver and kidney transplant recipients: A quality improvement project

    Parents of pediatric liver and kidney transplant recipients were surveyed regarding their current education plans (eg, Individualized Education Program, 504), satisfaction with these plans, and interest in educational support from the psychosocial transplant team. Survey results indicate high rates of IEP and 504 plans, academic and related services, and accommodations among this population. The majority of parents/guardians reported satisfaction with their child’s current school plan and did not report need for additional transplant team support specific to school services on the survey measure.     Building bridges: a critical analysis of university and industry collaboration to improve diverse access to elite professions

    This article explores how both universities and industry can work together to improve access to graduate opportunities for disadvantaged students. Focusing on an initiative which involved students from a post-1992 university experiencing London's legal sector, this article analyses the factors which contribute to students' perceptions of their increased self-efficacy as a result of participating in the event. Utilising a focus group methodology, the article critically examines the barriers that can be imposed by students' socio-economic backgrounds which may prevent such initiatives from having a meaningful impact on diverse recruitment and fair access to higher professional occupations. Focusing in on 2 particular strands of the Triple Helix Model, this article also makes some recommendations as to how more effective bridges can be built between universities and industry to improve access for all to the elite professions

    Psychosocial functioning in pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families

    Across pediatric organ transplant populations, patient and family psychosocial functioning is associated with important health‐related outcomes. Research has suggested that pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families are at increased risk for adverse psychosocial outcomes; however, recent investigation of psychosocial functioning in this population is lacking. This study aimed to provide a contemporary characterization of psychosocial functioning in pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families. Associations between psychosocial function, demographic variables, and transplant‐related variables were investigated. Fifty‐six parents/guardians of pediatric heart transplant recipients completed a comprehensive psychosocial screening measure during transplant follow‐up clinic visits. Descriptive statistics, correlational analyses, and independent samples t tests were performed. Forty percent of pediatric heart transplant recipients and their families endorsed clinically meaningful levels of total psychosocial risk. One‐third of patients presented with clinically significant psychological problems per parent report. Psychosocial risk was unassociated with demographic or transplant‐related factors. Despite notable improvements in the survival of pediatric heart transplant recipients over the past decade, patients and families present with sustained psychosocial risks well beyond the immediate post‐transplant period, necessitating mental health intervention to mitigate adverse impact on health‐related outcomes.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142422/1/petr13110.pdfhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/142422/2/petr13110_am.pd

    Work/ family demands and cardiometabolic risk and sleep duration in extended care employees: multilevel findings from the Work, family and Health Network

    The study investigates the associations of work-family conflict and other work and family conditions with objectively-measured outcomes cardiometabolic risk and sleep duration in a study of employees in nursing homes. Multilevel analyses are used to assess cross-sectional associations between employee and job characteristics and health in analyses of 1,524 employees in 30 extended care facilities in a single company. We examine work and family conditions in relation to two major study health outcomes: 1) a validated, Framingham cardiometabolic risk score based on measured blood pressure, cholesterol, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), body mass index (BMI), and self-reported tobacco consumption, and 2) wrist actigraphy-based measures of sleep duration. In fully-adjusted multi-level models, Work-To-Family conflict, but not Family-to-Work conflict was positively associated with cardiometabolic risk. Having a lower-level occupation (nursing assistants vs. nurses) was also associated with increased cardiometabolic risk, while being married and having younger children at home was protective. A significant age by Work-To-Family conflict interaction revealed that higher Work-To-Family conflict was more strongly associated with increased cardiometabolic risk in younger employees. With regard to sleep duration, high Family-To-Work Conflict was significantly associated with shorter sleep duration. In addition, working long hours and having younger children at home were both independently associated with shorter sleep duration. High Work-To-Family Conflict was associated with longer sleep duration. These results indicate that different dimensions of work-family conflict (i.e., Work-To-Family Conflict and Family-To-Work Conflict) may both pose threats to cardiometabolic risk and sleep duration for employees. This study contributes to the research on work- family conflict suggesting that Work-To-Family and Family-To-Work conflict are associated with specific outcomes. Translating theory and our findings to preventive interventions entails recognition of the dimensionality of work and family dynamics and the need to target specific work and family conditions

    Psychological Functioning in Pediatric Patients with Single Ventricle Congenital Heart Disease: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review Protocol

    Mental health is an important yet understudied area of care for patients with congenital heart disease. Through limited studies, it is known that children and adults with congenital heart disease have increased incidence of mental health disorders when compared to their peers [1-3]. Some studies estimate that over half of adult patients with congenital heart disease have significant symptoms of a mood or anxiety disorder [3], although it is very likely that these symptoms are underrecognized. It is also known that in adults with congenital heart disease, depression is responsible for the variability of self-reported health status of patients, including physical functioning [4]. A prior review and meta-analysis of patient with complex congenital heart disease showed an increased risk of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, however this review was not specific to the single ventricle population [5]. A recent review and meta-analysis of patients with children and adults with single ventricle physiology found worse health-related quality of life outcomes in this population [6], however currently less is known about psychological functioning specifically in the pediatric single ventricle population. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize and meta-analyze the existing literature of psychological outcomes in pediatric single ventricle patients.     Social functioning and behaviour in Mucopolysaccharidosis IH [Hurlers Syndrome]

    Background: Mucopolysaccharidosis type IH (MPS-IH) [Hurlers Syndrome] is a developmental genetic disorder characterised by severe physical symptoms and cognitive decline. This study aimed to investigate the behavioural phenotype of MPS-IH treated by haematopoietic cell transplantation, focusing on social functioning and sleep. Parental stress was also measured. Methods: Participants were 22 children with MPS-IH (mean age 9 years 1 month), of whom 10 were male (45%). Parents completed the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), Children’s Sleep Habit Questionnaire and Parent Stress Index, Short Form (PSI-SF). Results: Twenty-three per cent of children with MPS-IH scored in the severe range of the SRS, suggesting significant difficulties in social functioning. Children with MPS-IH were more than 30 times more likely to receive scores in the severe range than typically developing children. Thirty-six per cent scored in the mild-to-moderate range, suggesting milder, but marked, difficulties in social interaction. Although children with MPS-IH did not show significantly higher rates of internalising, externalising or total behaviour problems than the normative sample, they received scores that were significantly higher on social, thought and attention problems and rule-breaking behaviour, and all the competence areas of the CBCL. Parents of children with MPS-IH did not score significantly higher on parental stress than parents in a normative sample. Conclusions: Parents of children with MPS-IH rate their children as having problems with social functioning and various areas of competence more frequently than previously thought, with implications for clinical support

Mycoviruses have been described in phytopathogenic fungi while in entomopathogenic fungi their presence has been reported only rarely. Here we show that 21.3% of a collection of B. bassiana isolates sourced from worldwide locations, harbor dsRNA elements. Molecular characterization of these elements revealed the prevalence of mycoviruses belonging to the Partitiviridae and Totiviridae families, the smallest reported virus to date, belonging to the family Narnaviridae, and viruses unassigned to a family or genus. Of particular importance is the discovery of members of a newly proposed family Polymycoviridae in B. bassiana. Polymycoviruses, previously designated as tetramycoviruses, consist of four non-conventionally encapsidated capped dsRNAs. The presence of additional non-homologous genomic segments in B. bassiana polymycoviruses and other fungi illustrates the unprecedented dynamic nature of the viral genome. Finally, a comparison of virus-free and virus-infected isogenic lines derived from an exemplar B. bassiana isolate revealed a mild hypervirulent effect of mycoviruses on the growth of their host isolate and on its pathogenicity against the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella, highlighting for the first time the potential of mycoviruses as enhancers of biocontrol agents.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
