    Methods to quantify soft-tissue based facial growth and treatment outcomes in children: a systematic review.

    Contains fulltext : 108661.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)CONTEXT: Technological advancements have led craniofacial researchers and clinicians into the era of three-dimensional digital imaging for quantitative evaluation of craniofacial growth and treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To give an overview of soft-tissue based methods for quantitative longitudinal assessment of facial dimensions in children until six years of age and to assess the reliability of these methods in studies with good methodological quality. DATA SOURCE: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus and CINAHL were searched. A hand search was performed to check for additional relevant studies. STUDY SELECTION: Primary publications on facial growth and treatment outcomes in children younger than six years of age were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Independent data extraction by two observers. A quality assessment instrument was used to determine the methodological quality. Methods, used in studies with good methodological quality, were assessed for reliability expressed as the magnitude of the measurement error and the correlation coefficient between repeated measurements. RESULTS: In total, 47 studies were included describing 4 methods: 2D x-ray cephalometry; 2D photography; anthropometry; 3D imaging techniques (surface laser scanning, stereophotogrammetry and cone beam computed tomography). In general the measurement error was below 1 mm and 1 degrees and correlation coefficients range from 0.65 to 1.0. CONCLUSION: Various methods have shown to be reliable. However, at present stereophotogrammetry seems to be the best 3D method for quantitative longitudinal assessment of facial dimensions in children until six years of age due to its millisecond fast image capture, archival capabilities, high resolution and no exposure to ionizing radiation

    Nitrogen availability and defense of tomato against two-spotted spider mite

    The aim of this work was to study how nitrogen availability affects within-plant allocation to growth and secondary metabolites and how this allocation affects host selection by herbivores. Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum) were grown at six levels of nitrogen availability. When nitrogen availability increased, plant relative growth rate increased, but tissue carbon/nitrogen ratio in the second oldest true leaf and allocation to large glandular trichomes (type VI) as well as to the defense compounds rutin and chlorogenic acid decreased. Leaf protein concentration increased. Two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) females responded significantly to these changes: in dual choice tests they preferred leaf disks from plants grown at high nitrogen availability, with a low C/N ratio. This preference persisted in an olfactometer in which the mites were offered only the odors released by leaves with damaged trichomes. We conclude that in a tomato leaf increased nitrogen availability leads to decreased allocation to defenses, and that repellent volatiles released by trichomes play a key role in affecting leaf selection by two-spotted spider mite females

    Characterization of Phloem Iron and Its Possible Role in the Regulation of Fe-Efficiency Reactions

    `Fe-efficiency reactions' are induced in the roots of dicotyledonous plants as a response to Fe deficiency. The role of phloem Fe in the regulation of these reactions was investigated. Iron travels in the phloem of Ricinus communis L. as a complex with an estimated molecular weight of 2400, as determined by gel exclusion chromatography. The complex is predominantly in the ferric form, but because of the presence of reducing compounds in the phloem sap, there must be a fast turnover in situ between ferric and ferrous (k ≈ 1 min(−1)). Iron concentrations in R. communis phloem were determined colorimetrically or after addition of (59)Fe to the nutrient solution. The iron content of the phloem in Fe-deficient plants was lower (7 micromolar) than in Fe-sufficient plants (20 micromolar). Administration of Fe-EDTA to leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. increased the iron content of the roots within 2 days, and decreased proton extrusion and ferric chelate reduction. The increase in iron content of the roots was about the same as the difference between iron contents of roots grown on two iron levels with a concomitantly different expression of Fe-efficiency reactions. We conclude that the iron content of the leaves is reflected by the iron content of the phloem sap, and that the capacity of the phloem to carry iron to the roots is sufficient to influence the development of Fe-efficiency reactions. This does not preclude other ways for the shoot to influence these reactions

    Mobility Characteristics of Children with Spastic Paraplegia Due to a Mutation in the <i>KIF1A</i> Gene

    Item does not contain fulltextSeveral de novo variants in the KIF1A gene have been reported to cause a complicated form of hereditary spastic paraplegia. Additional symptoms include cognitive impairment and varying degrees of peripheral neuropathy, epilepsy, decreased visual acuity, and ataxia. We describe four patients (ages 10-18 years), focusing on their mobility and gait characteristics. Two patients were not able to walk without assistance and showed a severe abnormal gait pattern, crouch gait. At examination, severe contractures were found.In addition to describing the different phenotypes with specific attention to gait in our cases, we reviewed known KIF1A mutations and summarized their associated phenotypes.We conclude that mobility and cognition are severely affected in children with spastic paraplegia due to de novo KIF1A mutations. Deterioration in mobility is most likely due to progressive spasticity, muscle weakness, and the secondary development of severe contractures, possibly combined with an additional progressive polyneuropathy. Close follow-up and treatment of these patients are warranted
