    A model for continuous monitoring of patients with major depression in short and long term periods

It has a high prevalence and it is predicted that it will be among the three leading causes of disease burden by 2030. The prevalence of depression, all of its social and personal costs, and its recurrent characteristics, put heavy constraints on the ability of the public healthcare system to provide sufficient support for patients with depression. In this research, a model for continuous monitoring and tracking of depression in both short-term and long-term periods is presented. This model is based on a new qualitative reasoning approach. METHOD: This paper describes the patient assessment unit of a major depression monitoring system that has three modules: a patient progress module, based on a qualitative reasoning model; an analysis module, based on expert knowledge and a rules-based system; and the communication module. These modules base their reasoning mainly on data of the patient's mood and life events that are obtained from the patient's responses to specific questionnaires (PHQ-9, M.I.N.I. and Brugha). The patient assessment unit provides synthetic and useful information for both patients and physicians, keeps them informed of the progress of patients, and alerts them in the case of necessity. RESULTS: A set of hypothetical patients has been defined based on clinically possible cases in order to perform a complete scenario evaluation. The results that have been verified by psychiatrists suggest the utility of the platform. CONCLUSION: The proposed major depression monitoring system takes advantage of current technologies and facilitates more frequent follow-up of the progress of patients during their home stay after being diagnosed with depression by a psychiatrist.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Panoramic-Based Mandibular Indices and Bone Mineral Density of Femoral Neck and Lumbar Vertebrae in Women

    Objective: The aim of this cross-sectional analytic study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of panoramic-based indices of the mandible (Mental Index-MI, Mandibular Cortical Index-MCI and Panoramic Mandibular Index-PMI) and to determine their correlationwith bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae (L2-L4) in order to assess the possibility of using these parameters as indicators of osteoporosis.Materials and Methods: The mandibular indices of 67 women over 35 years old were measured from panoramic radiographs, and bone densitometry was performed in the femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae (L2-L4), using DXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry)technique. The patients were divided into three categories of normal, osteopenic andosteoporotic in each skeletal region. One-way ANOVA and ROC curve analyses were applied.The results were considered statistically significant when the P-value was less than 0.05.Results: Comparing the mean BMD in the femoral neck in women between C1 and C3 subgroups of MCI, a significant difference was detected (P=0.04). The mean PMI in the three skeletal subgroups was not different according to the skeletal region (P>0.05). We found a significant difference in mean MI between normal and osteopenic subgroups in the femoral neck (P=0.042).Conclusion: Using radiomorphometric indices of the mandible (MCI-MI) may be useful in determining the skeletal status of the patients, but is not sufficient for precise evaluation

    Improvement of Hydrogenation and Dehydrogenation Kinetics of As-Cast AZ91 Magnesium Alloy via Twin Parallel Channel Angular Extrusion Processing

In the current study, Twin Parallel Channel Angular Extrusion (TPCAE) as a developed SPD processing technique is used to improve the hydrogen storage properties of AZ91 cast alloy. The processing is conducted at different temperatures, ranging from 340 °C down to 200 °C. The hydrogen absorption and desorption tests are conducted kinetically at three different temperatures, using a Sievert-type apparatus. Remarkable improvement in the absorption kinetic is achieved as a result of the TPCAE processing. A maximum absorption capacity of 6.1 wt.% within a time span of 2000 s is achieved for the sample with three passes of processing complemented at 250 °C. Also, the kinetic of dehydrogenation is improved significantly and complete desorption at 350 °C is achieved for all the processed samples within a time span of maximum 2500 s. By calculating the activation energy of hydrogenation and evaluating the microstructure changes, it is found that implementing sufficient thermomechanical work level along with applying the last pass of the process at lower temperature results in a reduction of the activation energy and improvement of the hydrogenation kinetic.Shiraz University, grant number 99-GR-ENG 15

    Gemini imidazolium gels enhance the photodynamic performance of porphyrins

    Photodynamic therapy (PDT) successful clinical use has led to an emerging interest in the development of improved delivery systems for photosensitizers. Amongst different formulations, gels have the advantage of being easier to apply, providing greater adhesion to the affected region and allowing light penetration. Importantly, we have previously reported that by incorporating porphyrin into a bisimidazolium gelator matrix there is an increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation compared to the photosensitizer in solution [1]. Motivated by this, we report further assessment on the photosensitizing capabilities of porphyrins in a gel structure. In this work, we evaluated effect of varying the chemical structures of porphyrins on their photosensitizing capabilities whilst embedded within a supramolecular hydrogel based on gemini imidazolium amphiphiles. The investigated porphyrins presented enhanced singlet oxygen (1O2) within the hydrogel matrix compared to solution and showed negligent release in relevant biological media. Rheological measurements revealed that porphyrin hydrogels presented desirable viscoelastic properties as a functional delivery system for PDT
