    Anomalous Enhancement of the Boltzmann Conductivity in Disordered Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons

    We study the conductivity of disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the incoherent regime by using the Boltzmann equation approach. The band structure of zigzag nanoribbons contains two energy valleys, and each valley has an excess one-way channel. The crucial point is that the numbers of conducting channels for two propagating directions are imbalanced in each valley due to the presence of an excess one-way channel. It was pointed out that as a consequence of this imbalance, a perfectly conducting channel is stabilized in the coherent regime if intervalley scattering is absent. We show that even in the incoherent regime, the conductivity is anomalously enhanced if intervalley scattering is very weak. Particularly, in the limit of no intervalley scattering, the dimensionless conductance approaches to unity with increasing ribbon length as if there exists a perfectly conducting channel. We also show that anomalous valley polarization of electron density appears in the presence of an electric field.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Epitaxial Growth of a Full-Heusler Alloy Co2_{2}FeSi on Silicon by Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy

    For electrical spin injection and detection of spin-polarized electrons in silicon, we explore highly epitaxial growth of ferromagnetic full-Heusler-alloy Co2FeSi thin films on silicon substrates using low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy (LTMBE). Although in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction images clearly show two-dimensional epitaxial growth for growth temperatures T_G of 60, 130, and 200 C, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy experiments reveal that there are single-crystal phases other than Heusler alloys near the interface between Co_2FeSi and Si for T_G = 130 and 200 C. On the other hand, almost perfect heterointerfaces are achieved for T_G = 60 C. These results and magnetic measurements indicate that highly epitaxial growth of Co_2FeSi thin films on Si is demonstrated only for T_G = 60 C.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure

    Conductance fluctuations in the presence of spin scattering

    Electron transport through disordered systems that include spin scatterers is studied numerically. We consider three kinds of magnetic impurities: the Ising, the XY and the Heisenberg. By extending the transfer matrix method to include the spin degree of freedom, the two terminal conductance is calculated. The variance of conductance is halved as the number of spin components of the magnetic impurities increases. Application of the Zeeman field in the lead causes a further halving of the variance under certain conditions.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.

    The result of the experiment which ethylalcohol affect on the X-rays injury advantageously reported by M. Yamamoto who is our co-worker at the same time ago, and we attempted to this experiment that whether ethylalcohol affect on the restoration of X-rays injury usefully or not, and this experiment carried out on 3 groups as following: 1) A group of mice in wich ethylalcohol was not used, 2) B group of mice in which ethylalcohol was used only for irradiated period with 100r×10, 3) C group of mice in which ethylalcohol was used not only for irradiated period with 100r×10, but for 15 days, 30 days after the irradiated with 100r×10, and we found out following results in this experiment. In this case there were more histological restorating figures of spleen, liver injuries than in the case of mice in which ethylalcohol was not used

    Effects of upregulated indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase 1 by interferon γ gene transfer on interferon γ-mediated antitumor activity.

    Interferon γ (IFN-γ), an anticancer agent, is a strong inducer of indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), which is a tryptophan-metabolizing enzyme involved in the induction of tumor immune tolerance. In this study, we investigated the IDO1 expression in organs after IFN-γ gene transfer to mice. IFN-γ gene transfer greatly increased the mRNA expression of IDO1 in many tissues with the highest in the liver. This upregulation was associated with reduced L-tryptophan levels and increased L-kynurenine levels in serum, indicating that IFN-γ gene transfer increased the IDO activity. Then, Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) tumor-bearing wild-type and IDO1-knockout (IDO1 KO) mice were used to investigate the effects of IDO1 on the antitumor activity of IFN-γ. IFN-γ gene transfer significantly retarded the tumor growth in both strains without any significant difference in tumor size between the two groups. By contrast, the IDO1 activity was increased only in the wild-type mice by IFN-γ gene transfer, suggesting that cells other than LLC cells, such as tumor stromal cells, are the major contributors of IDO1 expression in LLC tumor. Taken together, these results imply that IFN-γ gene transfer mediated IDO1 upregulation in cells other than LLC cells has hardly any effect on the antitumor activity of IFN-γ

    A Case Report of a Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma in a T-cell Receptor β Chain and p53 Double-knockout Mouse

    A subcutaneous tumor was found in the right abdomen of a 16-week-old male TCRβ and p53 double-knockout mouse. The tumor had indistinct borders with the surrounding tissue. The cut surface after formalin fixation was pale yellowish white, partially dark red and partly white. Histologically, the tumor was composed of three distinct regions. The first region showed pleomorphic cells arranged in sheets. The second region showed spindle cells arranged in interlacing fascicles. The final region contained a mixture of the above mentioned two types of cells. Furthermore, a small amount of collagen fibers, round cells, multinucleated giant cells, and cells with eosinophilic granules were observed between these tumor cells. Immunohistochemical examination and electron microscopy identified that the pleomorphic cells and spindle cells were histiocytes and fibroblasts, respectively, and that the round cells were undifferentiated mesenchymal cells. Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as a malignant fibrous histiocytoma
