Lice, Mites, and Ticks of Southeastern Wisconsin Mammals

    Get PDF
Seventeen species of southeastern Wisconsin mammals were found to 6e infected with arthropod ectoparasites other than fleas. One host species was infested with one species of biting lice (Mallophaga), five with five species of sucking lice (Anoplura), ten with at least 16 species of mites (Acari) and nine with six species of hard ticks (Ixodidae). Many new state and/or host records are reported. Host specificity was very pronounced in lice but less marked in ticks and mites particularly in the more common species, ex. Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese) and Ixodes cookei Packard, respectively

Marine Flora and Fauna of the eastern United States: Acanthocephala

    Get PDF
The phylum Acanthocephala (intestinal worm parasites of vertebrates) of the Atlantic coast of the United States comprises 43 species and 20 genera belonging to three orders: Echinorhynchida, Neoechinorhynchida, and Polymorphida. Adults are exclusively intestinal parasites of vertebrates. This study includes those species found in vertebrates of marine and estuarine environments along the North American Atlantic coast between Maine and Texas. Species that can be found within that geographical range and those that typically infect freshwater fishes but that are occasionally present in marine or estuarine hosts are also included. The taxonamy, anatomy, natural history, and ecology of the phylum Acanthocephala are discussed, and an illustrated key to the genera is presented. Techniques, an\ud annotated systematic treatment of all 43 species, and a systematic index are included. No systematic decisions will be made at this time, but areas where such decisions are pending will be indicated and discussed for future reports. (PDF file contains 32 pages.

Hysteresis of Finite Arrays of Magnetic nano Dots

    Get PDF
Hysteresis curves for finite arrays of N×NN\times N ferromagnetic nano dots subject to the dipole-dipole interaction are investigated for N=2...13N=2... 13. Spin arrangements up to N=6 are presented, which indicate the onset of bulk-like behavior associated with odd (N=5) and even (N=6) systems. The effect of field misalignment on the hysteresis loops is also studied for N=3...6N=3... 6. The area ANA_N of the hysteresis loop is studied as a function of NN. We find that AN−A∞A_N-A_\infty approximately scales as N−3/2N^{-{3/2}} for NN odd and as N−2N^{-2} for NN even.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to PR

Detection and Isolation of Link Failures under the Agreement Protocol

In this paper a property of the multi-agent consensus dynamics that relates the failure of links in the network to jump discontinuities in the derivatives of the output responses of the nodes is derived and verified analytically. At the next step, an algorithm for sensor placement is proposed, which would enable the designer to detect and isolate any link failures across the network based on the observed jump discontinuities in the derivatives of the responses of a subset of nodes. These results are explained through elaborative examples.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 201

Moment-Based Spectral Analysis of Random Graphs with Given Expected Degrees

In this paper, we analyze the limiting spectral distribution of the adjacency matrix of a random graph ensemble, proposed by Chung and Lu, in which a given expected degree sequence w‾nT=(w1(n),…,wn(n))\overline{w}_n^{^{T}} = (w^{(n)}_1,\ldots,w^{(n)}_n) is prescribed on the ensemble. Let ai,j=1\mathbf{a}_{i,j} =1 if there is an edge between the nodes {i,j}\{i,j\} and zero otherwise, and consider the normalized random adjacency matrix of the graph ensemble: An\mathbf{A}_n == [ai,j/n]i,j=1n [\mathbf{a}_{i,j}/\sqrt{n}]_{i,j=1}^{n}. The empirical spectral distribution of An\mathbf{A}_n denoted by Fn(⋅)\mathbf{F}_n(\mathord{\cdot}) is the empirical measure putting a mass 1/n1/n at each of the nn real eigenvalues of the symmetric matrix An\mathbf{A}_n. Under some technical conditions on the expected degree sequence, we show that with probability one, Fn(⋅)\mathbf{F}_n(\mathord{\cdot}) converges weakly to a deterministic distribution F(⋅)F(\mathord{\cdot}). Furthermore, we fully characterize this distribution by providing explicit expressions for the moments of F(⋅)F(\mathord{\cdot}). We apply our results to well-known degree distributions, such as power-law and exponential. The asymptotic expressions of the spectral moments in each case provide significant insights about the bulk behavior of the eigenvalue spectrum

On participatory service provision at the network edge with community home gateways

Edge computing is considered as a technology to enable new types of services which operate at the network edge. There are important use cases in ambient intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) for edge computing driven by huge business potentials. Most of today's edge computing platforms, however, consist of proprietary gateways, which are either closed or fairly restricted to deploy any third-party services. In this paper we discuss a participatory edge computing system running on home gateways to serve as an open environment to deploy local services. We present first motivating use cases and review existing approaches and design considerations for the proposed system. Then we show our platform which materializes the principles of an open and participatory edge environment, to lower the entry barriers for service deployment at the network edge. By using containers, our platform can flexibly enable third-party services, and may serve as an infrastructure to support several application domains of ambient intelligence.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
