    Seasonal variations in scrotal circumference and semen characteristics of Naimi and Najdi rams in Saudi Arabia

    In the present study, the authors analysed the effects of seasonal variations on the scrotal circumference and semen characteristics in two ram breeds in Saudi Arabia, namely Naimi and Najdi. Five rams of each breed were used in this experiment. Scrotal circumference and semen characteristics were evaluated in each ram twice a month throughout the year. Significant differences were observed in the scrotal circumference between various seasons. The largest production of semen was recorded mainly in spring, whereas the lowest semen volume was produced in summer. The pH of the semen was slightly alkaline and significantly lower in autumn than in spring. Furthermore, the highest value of the total number of sperm per ejaculate was observed in spring for both breeds. The results indicated that mass motility increased significantly in autumn compared with winter, spring, and summer. Progressive motility was significantly lower during the months of summer and spring. However, no significant differences were recorded between autumn and winter. Hence, the presence of significant seasonal variations in semen quantity and quality of Naimi and Najdi rams suggests the viability of increased utilization of rams in spring and autumn for semen collection and reproductive practices.Keywords: Mass motility, progressive motility, semen volume, sperm concentratio

    A virtual university: Characteristics of the concept (by the example of the syrian virtual university)

    © Serials Publications.The relevance of the problem lies in the necessity of detailed study of the Middle East region and its potential in the field of virtual education caused by the fact that all existing studies cover the projects which were implemented in the educational space of North America and Western Europe. The basic approach is presented by the method of observation, the method of interview with the ideologists of the Syrian Virtual University, which is the subject of our study, as well as the survey of students. The main results of the study consist in identification of distinctive features of virtual learning, definition of the required conditions for adaptation of the model, as well as determination of the main problems occurred within the process of implementation of the virtual university model by the example of the Syrian Virtual University. The research creates necessary prerequisites for a more detailed and deep analysis of the educational process development in the Middle East; the results of the study may be included in teaching materials and textbooks on pedagogy

    Performance Characteristics of Breezhaler((R)) and Aerolizer((R)) in the Real-World Setting

    The evaluation of errors in use with different inhaler devices is challenging to quantify as there are a number of definitions of critical and non-critical errors with respect to inhaler use; in addition, performance characteristics of the device, such as airflow resistance, can also influence effective use in the real-world setting. Repeated observations and checking/correcting inhaler use are essential to optimise clinical effectiveness of inhaled therapy in patients. BreezhalerÂź is a single unit-dose dry powder inhaler used in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and in asthma (budesonide) that has low airflow resistance, making it easier for patients of varying disease severities to achieve the inhalation flow rate required for lung deposition of treatment. Similar to BreezhalerÂź, the AerolizerÂź is a single unit-dose dry powder inhaler used in asthma management with low airflow resistance. Studies have shown relatively low rates of critical errors with BreezhalerÂź and AerolizerÂź, with similarities in the critical errors reported; these data on critical errors together with similarities in the usability of BreezhalerÂź and AerolizerÂź further support the functional similarity between the two devices in both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. BreezhalerÂź also has patient-feedback features, including use of a transparent drug capsule that can be checked after inhalation to see it is empty. The low resistance of the dose-confirming BreezhalerÂź results in less inspiratory effort being required by patients for its effective use, which allows the device to be used effectively across a wide age range of patients and disease severities

    Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents’ growth and development

    Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified
