    Influence of Teacher Support and Personal Relevance on Academic Self-Efficacy and Enjoyment of Mathematics Lessons: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach

    The purpose of our study was to examine the effects of two psychosocial features of the classroom environment (teacher support and personal relevance) on college students’ academic self-efficacy and enjoyment of mathematics lessons. Data collected from 352 mathematics students attending three higher education institutions in the United Arab Emirates were used to validate the questionnaires and to investigate the hypothesized relationships. Structural equation modeling analysis suggests that teacher support and personal relevance are influential predictors of enjoyment of mathematics lessons and academic self-efficacy. L’objectif de cette étude est d’examiner les effets de deux facteurs psychosociaux de la salle de classe (soutien des enseignants et pertinence personnelle) sur l’auto-efficacité académique des étudiants universitaires et du plaisir qu’ils retirent des cours de mathématiques. On a puisé dans des données recueillies chez 352 étudiants en mathématiques de trois institutions d’études supérieures aux Émirats arabes unis pour valider les questionnaires et vérifier les relations postulées. Une analyse de la modélisation par équation structurelle laisse supposer que le soutien des enseignants et la pertinence personnelle ont constitué des facteurs de prévision influents quant au plaisir que retirent les étudiants des cours de mathématiques et à leur auto-efficacité académique

    Procedural And Distributive Justice As Mediators Of The Relationship Between Interactional Justice And Work Outcomes: An Empirical Study Of The UAE Public Health Care Sector

    This study examined the direct and indirect effects of different dimensions of organizational justice on organizational citizenship behaviors, and turnover intention in the context of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) healthcare sector. A questionnaire was administered to a random sample of 448 employees working in three different public hospitals in the UAE. The study used descriptive statistics, factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to analyze the data. The results revealed that perceptions of the three organizational justice dimensions (interactional justice, procedural justice, and distributive justice) have a direct influence on employees' organizational citizenship behaviors and turnover intention. In addition, the results showed that interactional justice has an indirect effect on both organizational citizenship behaviors and turnover intention through procedural and distributive justice. This study is one of the first empirical studies of its kind to demonstrate the role of procedural and distributive justice as mediators between interactional justice and employees' work attitudes and behaviors. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that each of the dimensions of organizational justice, which affect employee attitudes and behavior in the healthcare sector, gives us a better understanding of organizational justice and its dimensions and its influence

    Design for safety in construction: a study of design professionals in Kuwait

    Purpose: Design for safety (DfS), also known as prevention through design (PtD), is a concept that mitigates accidents and hazards through considerations during the design stage of building projects. The literature provides much information on this concept, but such information is only limited to a few developed countries such as the UK, the USA and Australia. There is limited insight into DfS implementation in the construction industry of several countries, including countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) such as Kuwait. Therefore, this study investigates DfS implementation among design professionals in the Kuwait construction industry. Design/methodology/approach: The study used a questionnaire survey to obtain data from design professionals. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics (i.e. analysis of variance and t-test). Findings: The results revealed that DfS awareness among design professionals is very high; there is a very high willingness among design professionals to apply the concept, and design professionals generally view DfS implementation as important. Despite these, the frequency of implementation of DfS practices is generally moderate. In addition, the results revealed that though there is a high interest in DfS training among the design professionals, their actual engagement in training is low. The results also suggest some association between the frequency of engagement in the DfS practices and designers' DfS awareness, training and education. DfS related regulations, industry guidance, formal education and training are considered by design professionals to have the greatest influence on DfS implementation in Kuwait. Originality/Value: These emerging findings both mirror and contradict aspects of the outcomes of previous DfS studies in other countries. Furthermore, the findings from this study provide insights into a less investigated area regarding work-related health and safety in the GCC region. It offers new and additional information and insights into the current state-of-the-art DfS implementation in the construction industry in Kuwait. In view of the findings, joined-up efforts by government, industry and academia are needed to enhance DfS implementation by design professionals in Kuwait

    Readiness for self-directed learning among King Abdulaziz University medical students

    Background: To determine readiness for self-directed learning (SDL) among medical students enrolled at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as well as identify demographic characteristics that might affect or control such readiness.Methods: Medical students at all levels of training were asked to participate in a study in the form of a self-response questionnaire via emailed link (Gugliemino’s Self-Directed Learner Readiness Scale [SDLRS]). This instrument was designed to measure the complex attitudes, skills and characteristics that comprise an individual’s current level of readiness to manage his or her own learning. Data were analysed using SPSS, and mean, median and total scores were calculated and compared.Results: Of more than 1900 medical students at the KAU Faculty of Medicine, 192 students responded to the self-response questionnaire (see appendix). Results suggested that readiness for SDL is below average for more than 99% of medical studentsConclusions: Our study showed that further evaluation of our students' readiness for SDL is required, as well as exploration and implementation of tools for improving skill and knowledge development, to enable students to develop a lifelong learning attitude

    The importance of strong local partnerships and alliances for the sustainability and long-term success of agricultural development efforts cannot be overemphasized. This is supported by its inclusion as a standalone goal (goal 17) in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also by increasing calls to make local partnerships and alliances integral components of development projects and programmes. Strong local partnerships are critical not only for identifying development needs, setting priorities, and driving the implementation of validated development interventions but also for scaling and sustaining impacts of such interventions

    Uncommon mixed outbreak of pneumococcal and meningococcal meningitis in Jirapa District, Upper West Region, Ghana, 2016

    Objective: The Jirapa District in Ghana falls within the African meningitis belt where over 500 million people are at risk of epidemic meningitis. The district suffered an outbreak of Neisseria meningitides, W (NMW) in 2012 and a mixed outbreak of Streptococcus pneumonia and NMW in early 2016. We investigated the outbreak to identify the source, causative agents, and magnitude and assess health facility preparedness and propose control measures.Design and Setting: We conducted a descriptive study in all sub-districts of Jirapa, between 28th February to10th April 2016. We reviewed records at health facilities, assessed health facility preparedness, searched for cases, traced contacts of case to administer chemoprophylaxis and collect CSF for laboratory analysis. Data were entered in Microsoft excel cleaned, and exported to stata-13 for analysis by person place and time.Results: A total 233 meningitis cases were reported with mean age of 22.4years and standard deviation 21.6. Males were (57%), females (43%) and 60.8% were less than 19 years. Attack rate of meningitis was 214/100,000 with case fatality rate (CFR) of 12.4% (29/233). Causative agents were NMW (69.5%) and streptococcus pneumonia (27.1%), mainly serotype STN1 and H. influenza (3.4%). The index case had travel history to dollar power, close to Tain District which is the epicentre for the 2016 meningitis outbreak in Ghana.Conclusion: The Jirapa district experienced a mixed outbreak of streptococcal and meningococcal meningitis in early 2016, facilitated by migration.     Adoption and impact of improved groundnut varieties on household food security in Nigeria

    Improved agricultural technologies are promoted as cost-effective and sustainable ways of improving rural households’ food security and reducing poverty in developing countries. This study evaluates the relationship between improved groundnut varieties (IGVs) and household food security using detailed household and plot level data from a sample of over 1300 farm households in Northern Nigeria. Endogenous switching regression models are employed to control for potential endogeneity biases. Results show that about 30 % of groundnut plots are planted with improved varieties, and the adoption of IGVs significantly increases the likelihood of household per capita groundnut consumption by about 13 % and reduces the probability of households’ vulnerability to food (access) insecurity by 22 %. Counterfactual analyses show that non-adopting households could have enjoyed comparable benefits had they adopted IGVs. These results suggest that development interventions aimed at improving the diffusion and impacts of IGVs in Nigeria need to target farmers’ access to information about the technologies while developing groundnut seed systems to make quality seeds readily available to smallholder farmers at affordable prices

    Tetrahydropyrazolo[1,5-a]Pyrimidine-3-Carboxamide and N-Benzyl-6′,7′-Dihydrospiro[Piperidine-4,4′-Thieno[3,2-c]Pyran] analogues with bactericidal efficacy against Mycobacterium tuberculosis targeting MmpL3

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a major human pathogen and the causative agent for the pulmonary disease, tuberculosis (TB). Current treatment programs to combat TB are under threat due to the emergence of multi-drug and extensively-drug resistant TB. As part of our efforts towards the discovery of new anti-tubercular leads, a number of potent tetrahydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine-3-ca​rboxamide(THPP) and N-benzyl-6′,7′-dihydrospiro[piperidine-4,​4′-thieno[3,2-c]pyran](Spiro) analogues were recently identified against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis BCG through a high-throughput whole-cell screening campaign. Herein, we describe the attractive in vitro and in vivo anti-tubercular profiles of both lead series. The generation of M. tuberculosis spontaneous mutants and subsequent whole genome sequencing of several resistant mutants identified single mutations in the essential mmpL3 gene. This ‘genetic phenotype’ was further confirmed by a ‘chemical phenotype’, whereby M. bovis BCG treated with both the THPP and Spiro series resulted in the accumulation of trehalose monomycolate. In vivo efficacy evaluation of two optimized THPP and Spiro leads showed how the compounds were able to reduce >2 logs bacterial cfu counts in the lungs of infected mice
