A holistic measurement model of movement competency in children
Different countries have different methods for assessing movement competence in children; however, it is unclear whether the test batteries that are used measure the same aspects of movement competence. The aim of this paper was to (1) investigate whether the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2) and Körperkoordinations Test für Kinder (KTK) measure the same aspects of children’s movement competence and (2) examine the factorial structure of the TGMD-2 and KTK in a sample of Australian children. A total of 158 children participated (M age = 9.5; SD = 2.2). First, confirmatory factor analysis examined the independent factorial structure of the KTK and TGMD-2. Second, it was investigated whether locomotor, object control and body coordination loaded on the latent variable Movement Competency. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an adequate fit for both the KTK and TGMD-2. An adequate fit was also achieved for the final model. In this model, locomotor (r = .86), object control (r = .71) and body coordination (r = .52) loaded on movement competence. Findings support our hypothesis that the TGMD-2 and KTK measure discrete aspects of movement competence. Future researchers and practitioners should consider using a wider range of test batteries to assess movement competence
'Language Background Other Than English': a problem NAPLaN test category for Australian students of refugee background
Since 2008 Australia has held the National Assessment Program: Literacy and Numeracy (known as NAPLAN) for all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Despite the multilingual character of the Australian population, these standardized literacy and numeracy tests are built on an assumption of English as a first language competency. The capacity for monitoring the performance of students who speak languages other than English is achieved through the disaggregation of test data using a category labelled Language Background Other than English (LBOTE). A student is classified as LBOTE if they or their parents speak a language other than English at home. The category definition is so broad that the disaggregated national data suggest that LBOTE students are outperforming English speaking students, on most test domains, though the LBOTE category shows greater variance of results. Drawing on Foucault’s theory of governmentality, this article explores the possible implications of LBOTE categorisation for English as a Second Language (ESL) students of refugee background. The article uses a quantitative research project, carried out in Queensland, Australia, to demonstrate the potential inequities resultant from such a poorly constructed data category
Sensory ways to indigenous multimodal literacies : Hands and feet tell the story
This chapter reports original research that asks the question: What are the ways of knowing, being, and communicating that are valued and practiced in Indigenous communities? Literacy curricula, internationally and nationally, typically do not take into account the multi-sensorial dimensions of non-Western forms of representation that go beyond narrow conceptions of print. For example, literacies are often conceived as drawing on print, visual, spatial, gestural, and audio modes, but the role of haptics and locomotion has typically received little attention. This chapter highlights examples of the multi-sensoriality of Indigenous literacies observed in participatory community research with an Indigenous school. It extends recent theories of sensory studies in the history and cultural anthropology of the senses, applying these principles to literacy education. Sensory literacies is a theoretical perspective that gives priority to the sensorial dimensions of the body and its role in communication in literacy practice, because without a sensing body, we cannot know about or communicate with the world. The data demonstrates how the forgotten role of the hands and feet in dominant theories of communication is central to Indigenous identity and literacies. Written by a white academic with an Indigenous researcher, the chapter problematises the privileging of narrow, logocentric, and Western forms of literacy and its implications for rethinking the role of the whole body in literacy and the literacy curriculum for Indigenous students
Do aspects of social, emotional and behavioural development in the pre-school period predict later cognitive and academic attainment?
Some aspects of child non-cognitive development in pre-school have independently been shown to predict academic outcomes in later primary and early high school. However, the extent to which each aspect uniquely predicts these outcomes remains unclear. It is also unclear as to what mechanisms may predict these aspects of non-cognitive development. To address these issues, the current study sought to explore the antecedents to, and the predictive strength of, prominent aspects of early non-cognitive development (e.g. hyperactivity, pro-social behaviour, peer and conduct problems at 4–5 years of age) on children’s academic achievement at 6–11 years of age from a large, longitudinal and nationally representative sample. The study found early hyperactivity to be the strongest predictor of academic achievement at age 10–11 years of age. Further, early hostile parenting styles, child’s gender, and parental educational levels were the strongest and most consistent predictors of children’s non-cognitive development. Findings from this study further clarify the relational nature of aspects of non-cognitive development and academic outcomes, as well as the factors that best predict early non-cognitive development
‘Even though it might take me a while, in the end, I understand it’: a longitudinal case study of interactions between a conceptual change strategy and student motivation, interest and confidence
Although there have been many investigations of the social, motivational, and emotional aspects of conceptual
change, there have been few studies investigating the intersection of these factors with cognitive aspects in the
regular classroom. Using a conceptual change approach, this case study reports experiences of a student of low to
average prior attainment who achieved high levels of conceptual gains in five science topics over a two-year
period. Her experience in the cognitive, social and affective domains was probed through analysis of interviews,
student artefacts, video recordings of classroom learning, pre/post-tests and questionnaire results. For this student,
peripheral or incidental persuasion of belonging to a supportive small group initially led to greater engagement
with the construction of understanding through production of multiple student-generated representations,
resulting in improved self-confidence and high levels of conceptual change. Evidence of transfer from performance
to mastery approach goals, adoption of positive activating emotions and increased interest in science were
observed. This study highlights that adoption of a multidimensional conceptual change approach with judicious
organisation of small groups to support construction of verbal, pictorial and written representations of
understanding may bring about changes in motivational stance, self-confidence and emotions to maximise
conceptual change
Disposition of quinapril and quinaprilat in the isolated perfused rat kidney
An isolated perfused rat kidney model was used to probe the renal disposition of quinapril and quinaprilat after separate administration of each drug species. Control studies were performed with drug-free perfusate ( n=8 ) and perfusate containing quinapril ( n=9 ) quinaprilat ( n=7 ) at initial drug concentrations of 1000 ng/ml (including corresponding tracer levels of tritiated drug). Physiologic parameters were within the normal range of values for this technique and were stable for the duration of each experiment. Quinapril and quinaprilat concentrations were determined in perfusate, urine, and perfusate ultrafiltrate using a specific and sensitive reversed-phase HPLC procedure with radiochemical detection, coupled to liquid scintillation spectrometry. Perfusate protein binding was determined using an ultrafiltration method at 37°C. The total renal learance of quinapril ( CLr ) was calculated as Dose/AUC (0-∞), and is represented by the sum of its urinary and metabolic clearances. The urinary clearances ( CLe ) of quinapril and quinaprilat were calculated as urinary excretion rate divided by midpoint perfusate concentration for each respective species. Of the total renal clearance for quinapril ( CLr =4.49 ml/min), less than 0.1% was cleared as unchanged drug ( CLe =0.004 ml/min); over 99% of the drug was cleared as quinaprilat formed in the kidney. The clearance ratio of quinapril [ CR=CLr/(fu·GFR )] was 41.0, a value representing extensive tubular secretion into the renal cells.
