Influence of Multiple Traumatic Event Types on Mental Health Outcomes: Does Count Matter?

    Get PDF
The experience of potentially traumatizing events (PTEs) may be associated with conflicting outcomes: individuals may experience greater psychological distress (dose-response theory), or individuals may become more resilient against repeated PTEs (stress-inoculation theory). With limited empirical data comparing these theories, we examined the relationships between the count of lifetime PTE types and psychological outcomes [posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, impaired distress tolerance] using linear and quadratic regressions. A linear relationship would support the dose-response theory, and a quadratic relationship would support the stress-inoculation theory. We also explored whether there was a threshold number of PTE types fostering resiliency before an increase of distressing outcomes. The sample included 123 (68.30% female) treatment-seeking patients at a community mental health center participating in a larger study (Contractor et al. in Psychiatry Research, 252, 252215–252222, 2017). Linear regression results indicated number of PTE types significantly predicted increasing PTSD and depression severity and distress tolerance difficulties. Quadratic regression model results were not significant. ROC analyses indicated exposure to at least 3.5 PTE types predicted PTSD with moderate accuracy. In conclusion, the dose-response theory was supported, with results indicating there may be a threshold count of lifetime PTE types (\u3e 3) influencing traumatic stress outcomes

Stress is a physical, mental and emotional response to a challenging event and is a normal part of everyone\u27s life. It has been linked to suppression of the immune system and could increase the risk of getting ill or alter the course of existing illness. Studies show that stress is associated with increased HBA1c, especially in females. Therefore the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of stress with abnormal glucose value among the women community. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 168 residents of Mukim Sg. Pelek, Sepang, Selangor. Participants were selected through a simple random sampling and were asked to answer questionnaires provided. The Depression, Stress and Anxiety (DASS-21) scale was used to determine the prevalence of stress and random blood sugar (RBS) for measurement of the glucose level. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 and Chi-square analyses for determining the association between variables. The study found that 58.3% of the stressed women in the community have abnormal blood glucose level, which indicated that the risk of getting diabetes is slightly high. This finding has important implication for designing strategic plans for intervention program on awareness towards coping with stress positively

Flake is one of a high starch content that might increase the consumption of red rice. Important process are carried out to obtain the desired product of flake is boiling and drying. Variations in boiling and drying temperature affect the characteristics of the desired product. The research design used was randomized block design (RAK) factorial with two factors, the boiling temperature consists of 3 (three) standard treatment R1 (70°C), R2 (80°C), R3 (90°C) and the drying temperature consists of 3 (three) standard treatment K1 (50°C), K2 (60°C), K3 (70°C). Each treatment was repeated 2 times. The parameters tested is moisture content, rehydration, color, hardness, the size and shape of starch granules, organoleptic test (starchy flavor, mouthfeel, flavor with milk) and ash content, protein content, fat content for the best treatment. The data then analyzed using ANOVA at α = 5% to determine whether there is a marked influence on the parameters of the study. If there is a real effect, then continued with DMRT analysis. Drying temperature gave the different to the moisture content of red rice flake. Boiling temperature gave the different to hardness, rehydration, lightness, yellowness, the size and shape of starch granules red rice flake. Variations of boiling and drying temperature resulted in a different in flavor, starchy flavor, and mouthfeel of red rice flake. The best treatment was boiling temperature 80°C and drying temperature 70°C. The product has 5,35% moisture content, 170,06 N hardness, 198,37% rehydration, 48,90 lightness, 16,45 redness, 13,75 yellowness, and sensory evaluation values was 5,60; 5,12 and 5,55 for flavor, starchy flavor, and mouthfeel, respectively

Purpose To provide guidelines for patient recall regimen, professional maintenance regimen, and at-home maintenance regimen for patients with tooth-borne and implant-borne removable and fixed restorations. Materials and Methods The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP) convened a scientific panel of experts appointed by the ACP, American Dental Association (ADA), Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) who critically evaluated and debated recently published findings from two systematic reviews on this topic. The major outcomes and consequences considered during formulation of the clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) were risk for failure of tooth- and implant-borne restorations. The panel conducted a round table discussion of the proposed guidelines, which were debated in detail. Feedback was used to supplement and refine the proposed guidelines, and consensus was attained. Results A set of CPGs was developed for tooth-borne restorations and implant-borne restorations. Each CPG comprised (1) patient recall, (2) professional maintenance, and (3) at-home maintenance. For tooth-borne restorations, the professional maintenance and at-home maintenance CPGs were subdivided for removable and fixed restorations. For implant-borne restorations, the professional maintenance CPGs were subdivided for removable and fixed restorations and further divided into biological maintenance and mechanical maintenance for each type of restoration. The at-home maintenance CPGs were subdivided for removable and fixed restorations. Conclusions The clinical practice guidelines presented in this document were initially developed using the two systematic reviews. Additional guidelines were developed using expert opinion and consensus, which included discussion of the best clinical practices, clinical feasibility, and risk-benefit ratio to the patient. To the authors’ knowledge, these are the first CPGs addressing patient recall regimen, professional maintenance regimen, and at-home maintenance regimen for patients with tooth-borne and implant-borne restorations. This document serves as a baseline with the expectation of future modifications when additional evidence becomes available
