    Clementine Observations of the Zodiacal Light and the Dust Content of the Inner Solar System

    Using the Moon to occult the Sun, the Clementine spacecraft used its navigation cameras to map the inner zodiacal light at optical wavelengths over elongations of 3-30 degrees from the Sun. This surface brightness map is then used to infer the spatial distribution of interplanetary dust over heliocentric distances of about 10 solar radii to the orbit of Venus. We also apply a simple model that attributes the zodiacal light as being due to three dust populations having distinct inclination distributions, namely, dust from asteroids and Jupiter-family comets (JFCs), dust from Halley-type comets, and an isotropic cloud of dust from Oort Cloud comets. The best-fitting scenario indicates that asteroids + JFCs are the source of about 45% of the optical dust cross-section seen in the ecliptic at 1 AU, but that at least 89% of the dust cross-section enclosed by a 1 AU radius sphere is of a cometary origin. When these results are extrapolated out to the asteroid belt, we find an upper limit on the mass of the light-reflecting asteroidal dust that is equivalent to a 12 km asteroid, and a similar extrapolation of the isotropic dust cloud out to Oort Cloud distances yields a mass equivalent to a 30 km comet, although the latter mass is uncertain by orders of magnitude.Comment: To be published in Icaru

    Using bijective maps to improve free energy estimates

    We derive a fluctuation theorem for generalized work distributions, related to bijective mappings of the phase spaces of two physical systems, and use it to derive a two-sided constraint maximum likelihood estimator of their free energy difference which uses samples from the equilibrium configurations of both systems. As an application, we evaluate the chemical potential of a dense Lennard-Jones fluid and study the construction and performance of suitable maps.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figure

    Isoscaling Studies of Fission - a Sensitive Probe into the Dynamics of Scission

    The fragment yield ratios were investigated in the fission of 238,233U targets induced by 14 MeV neutrons. The isoscaling behavior was typically observed for the isotopic chains of fragments ranging from the proton-rich to the most neutron-rich ones. The observed high sensitivity of neutron-rich heavy fragments to the target neutron content suggests fission as a source of neutron-rich heavy nuclei for present and future rare ion beam facilities, allowing studies of nuclear properties towards the neutron drip-line and investigations of the conditions for nucleosynthesis of heavy nuclei. The breakdowns of the isoscaling behavior around N=62 and N=80 manifest the effect of two shell closures on the dynamics of scission. The shell closure around N=64 can be explained by the deformed shell. The investigation of isoscaling in the spontaneous fission of 248,244Cm further supports such conclusion. The Z-dependence of the isoscaling parameter exhibits a structure which can be possibly related to details of scission dynamics.     Mechanisms of rolling contact spalling

    The results of a study aimed at analyzing the mechanical material interactions responsible for rolling contact spalling of the 440 C steel, high pressure oxygen turbopump bearings are presented. A coupled temperature displacement finite element analysis of the effects of friction heating under the contact is presented. The contact is modelled as a stationary, heat generating, 2 dimensional indent in an elastic perfectly plastic half-space with heat fluxes up to 8.6 x 10000 KW/m sq comparable to those generated in the bearing. Local temperatures in excess of 1000 C are treated. The calculations reveal high levels of residual tension after the contact is unloaded and cools. Efforts to promote Mode 2/Mode 3 fatigue crack growth under cyclic torsion in hardened 440 C steel are described. Spalls produced on 440 C steel by a 3 ball/rod rolling contact testing machine were studied with scanning microscopy. The shapes of the cyclic, stress strain hysteresis loops displayed by hardened 440 C steel in cyclic torsion at room temperature are defined for the plastic strain amplitudes encountered in rolling/sliding contact.     The CP violating asymmetry from the decay rates H±→W±h1H^\pm\to W^\pm h_1 of charged Higgs bosons into the lightest neutral Higgs boson and a W±W^\pm boson is calculated and discussed in the complex MSSM.     Parametric LTL on Markov Chains

    This paper is concerned with the verification of finite Markov chains against parametrized LTL (pLTL) formulas. In pLTL, the until-modality is equipped with a bound that contains variables; e.g., ◊≤x φ\Diamond_{\le x}\ \varphi asserts that φ\varphi holds within xx time steps, where xx is a variable on natural numbers. The central problem studied in this paper is to determine the set of parameter valuations V≺p(φ)V_{\prec p} (\varphi) for which the probability to satisfy pLTL-formula φ\varphi in a Markov chain meets a given threshold ≺p\prec p, where ≺\prec is a comparison on reals and pp a probability. As for pLTL determining the emptiness of V>0(φ)V_{> 0}(\varphi) is undecidable, we consider several logic fragments. We consider parametric reachability properties, a sub-logic of pLTL restricted to next and ◊≤x\Diamond_{\le x}, parametric B\"uchi properties and finally, a maximal subclass of pLTL for which emptiness of V>0(φ)V_{> 0}(\varphi) is decidable.Comment: TCS Track B 201

    StemNet: An Evolving Service for Knowledge Networking in the Life Sciences

    Up until now, crucial life science information resources, whether bibliographic or factual databases, are isolated from each other. Moreover, semantic metadata intended to structure their contents is supplied in a manual form only. In the StemNet project we aim at developing a framework for semantic interoperability for these resources. This will facilitate the extraction of relevant information from textual sources and the generation of semantic metadata in a fully automatic manner. In this way, (from a computational perspective) unstructured life science documents are linked to structured biological fact databases, in particular to the identifiers of genes, proteins, etc. Thus, life scientists will be able to seamlessly access information from a homogeneous platform, despite the fact that the original information was unlinked and scattered over the whole variety of heterogeneous life science information resources and, therefore, almost inaccessible for integrated systematic search by academic, clinical, or industrial users

    Wash-Out in N_2-dominated leptogenesis

    We study the wash-out of a cosmological baryon asymmetry produced via leptogenesis by subsequent interactions. Therefore we focus on a scenario in which a lepton asymmetry is established in the out-of-equilibrium decays of the next-to-lightest right-handed neutrino. We apply the full classical Boltzmann equations without the assumption of kinetic equilibrium and including all quantum statistical factors to calculate the wash-out of the lepton asymmetry by interactions of the lightest right-handed state. We include scattering processes with top quarks in our analysis. This is of particular interest since the wash-out is enhanced by scatterings and the use of mode equations with quantum statistical distribution functions.
