The social status of women belonging to an ethnic minority and the resulting consequences for the field of social work
This thesis analyzes the history and current circumstances women belonging to ethnic minorities find themselves in. It also examines how social work deals with this issue. The situation of Indigenous women in Canada as well as Sinti and Roma women in Germany will serve as an example. Within Germany, there are no comparable Indigenous groups that went through a history similar to that of the Indigenous people of Canada. Thus, within the realms of possibility, it is intended to compare their situation to that of Sinti and Roma women and their communities in Germany. After comparing both groups and their current situation, possible consequences and improvements for the field of social work will be indicate
Robust Pilot Decontamination Based on Joint Angle and Power Domain Discrimination
We address the problem of noise and interference corrupted channel estimation
in massive MIMO systems. Interference, which originates from pilot reuse (or
contamination), can in principle be discriminated on the basis of the
distributions of path angles and amplitudes. In this paper we propose novel
robust channel estimation algorithms exploiting path diversity in both angle
and power domains, relying on a suitable combination of the spatial filtering
and amplitude based projection. The proposed approaches are able to cope with a
wide range of system and topology scenarios, including those where, unlike in
previous works, interference channel may overlap with desired channels in terms
of multipath angles of arrival or exceed them in terms of received power. In
particular we establish analytically the conditions under which the proposed
channel estimator is fully decontaminated. Simulation results confirm the
overall system gains when using the new methods.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on

On the definition of unemployment and its implementation in register data : the case of Germany
"Unemployment information in individual level register data depends on institutional settings, administrative procedures and which registers are merged. In this paper we suggest different implementation strategies for common international and German legal unemployment definitions for the Sample of the Integrated Employment Biographies (IEBS). The IEBS belongs to a new generation of German merged register data that is more comprehensive than previous data sets. Our descriptive figures show large differences in the number of spells and the unemployment duration across implementations. This suggests that empirical results of labour market research are likely to depend on the underlying legal definition of unemployment and its implementation in this data." Promoting Renewable Energies in Tourism
In tourism, energy demands are particularly high. Tourism facilities such as hotels require large amounts of electric and heating / cooling energy while their supply is usually still based on fossil energies.
This research approach analyses the potential of promoting renewable energies in tourism. It focuses on a combined and hence highly efficient production of both electric and thermal energy by biogas plants on the one hand and its provision to local tourism facilities via short distance networks on the other. Considering regional resource availability as well as socio-economic aspects, it thus examines strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that can arise from such a micro-cooperation. The research aim is to provide an actor-based, spatially transferable feasibility analysis
Sense of frustration: the debate on land reform in South Africa
In December 2018, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the opposition party, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), agreed to draft an amendment to the constitution in the South African Parliament. Its intention is to give concrete form to existing options to expropriate land without compensation. The narrative of land reform discussions in South Africa often creates the impression that the expropriation of land owned by white farmers without compensation could solve the country's problem of unequal income distribution. It would, however, take a whole set of political reforms to create more social justice. Visible successes might help appease those groups that are disappointed with South African democracy 25 years after the end of apartheid, but if the reforms fail then this will likely exacerbate the already palpable sense of frustration felt by ordinary South Africans.
