    Total Prompt Energy Release in the Neutron-Induced Fission of 235-U, 238-U, and 239-Pu

    This study addresses, for the first time, the total prompt energy release and its components for the fission of 235-U, 238-U, and 239-Pu as a function of the kinetic energy of the neutron inducing the fission. The components are extracted from experimental measurements, where they exist, together with model-dependent calculation, interpolation, and extrapolation. While the components display clear dependencies upon the incident neutron energy, their sums display only weak, yet definite, energy dependencies. Also addressed is the total prompt energy deposition in fission for the same three systems. Results are presented in equation form. New measurements are recommended as a consequence of this study.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nuclear Physics

    Perturbation theories for the S=1/2 spin ladder with four-spin ring exchange

    The isotropic S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin ladder with additional four-spin ring exchange is studied perturbatively in the strong coupling regime with the help of cluster expansion technique, and by means of bosonization in the weak coupling limit. It is found that a sufficiently large strength of ring exchange leads to a second-order phase transition, and the shape of the boundary in the vicinity of the known exact transition point is obtained. The critical exponent for the gap is found to be η≃1\eta\simeq1, in agreement both with exact results available for the dimer line and with the bosonization analysis. The phase emerging for high values of the ring exchange is argued to be gapped and spontaneously dimerized. The results for the transition line from strong coupling and from weak coupling match with each other naturally.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, some minor changes in text and reference

    A Query Language Combining Object Features and Semantic Events for Surveillance Video Retrieval

    International audienceIn this paper, we propose a novel query language for video indexing and retrieval that (1) enables to make queries both at the image level and at the semantic level (2) enables the users to define their own scenarios based on semantic events and (3) retrieves videos with both exact matching and similarity matching. For a query language, four main issues must be addressed: data modeling, query formulation, query parsing and query matching. In this paper we focus and give contributions on data modeling, query formulation and query matching. We are currently using color histograms and SIFT features at the image level and 10 types of events at the semantic level. We have tested the proposed query language for the retrieval of surveillance videos of a metro station. In our experiments the database contains more than 200 indexed physical objects and 48 semantic events. The results using different types of queries are promising

    Phase diagrams of the generalized spin-1/2 ladder under staggered field and dimerization: A renormalization group study

    In the weak-coupling regime of the continuous theories, two sets of one-loop renormalization group equations are derived and solved to disclose the phase diagrams of the antiferromagnetic generalized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder under the effect of (I) a staggered external magnetic field and (II) an explicit dimerization. In model (I), the splitting of the SU(2)2_2 critical line into U(1) and Z2_2 critical surfaces is observed; while in model (II), two critical surfaces arising from their underlying critical lines with SU(2)2_2 and Z2_2 characteristics merge into an SU(2)1_1 critical surface on the line where the model attains its highest symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure

    Selective Reflection Spectroscopy at the Interface between a Calcium Fluoride Window and Cs Vapour

    A special vapour cell has been built, that allows the measurement of the atom-surface van der Waals interaction exerted by a CaF2 window at the interface with Cs vapour. Mechanical and thermal fragility of fluoride windows make common designs of vapour cells unpractical, so that we have developed an all-sapphire sealed cell with an internal CaF2 window. Although impurities were accidentally introduced when filling-up the prototype cell, leading to a line-broadening and shift, the selective reflection spectrum on the Cs D1 line (894 nm) makes apparent the weak van der Waals surface interaction. The uncertainties introduced by the effects of these impurities in the van der Waals measurement are nearly eliminated when comparing the selective reflection signal at the CaF2 interface of interest, and at a sapphire window of the same cell. The ratio of the interaction respectively exerted by a sapphire interface and a CaF2 interface is found to be 0.55 ±\pm 0.25, in good agreement with the theoretical evaluation of ~0.67.Comment: soumis \`a Appl Phys B MS 4734

    Hysteresis and stepwise structure in MR curves of granular superconducting ruthenocuprates RuSr2_2(Gd1.5_{1.5}Ce0.5)_{0.5})Cu2_2O10−δ_{10-\delta}}

    Granular superconductivity effects in a polycrystalline sample of ruthenocuprate RuSr2_2(Gd1.5_{1.5}Ce0.5)_{0.5})Cu2_2O10−δ_{10-\delta} are studied. The main attention has been devoted to manifestation of these effects in current and magnetic-field dependences of resistive transition to superconducting state. It is found that current dependences of differential resistance taken at different temperatures intersect strictly at two definite values of current demonstrating crossing point effect. This phenomenon has been explained taking into account inhomogeneous state of intergrain medium which can be considered as a two-component system. The particular attention has been given to magnetoresistance (MR) hysteresis in mixed state of this inhomogeneous system and to influence of applied current and temperature on this phenomenon. Two types of hysteresis (clockwise and anticlockwise) have been found with transition from clockwise to anticlockwise hysteresis with increasing temperature. Stepwise structure in MR hysteretic curves has been observed in low-field range. Possible reasons of the change in hysteresis behavior with increasing temperature and appearance of the stepwise structure in MR curves are discussed taking into consideration inhomogeneous state of the granular superconductor studied.Comment: 31 pages, 13 figure

    Deformation and failure of the ice bridge on the Wilkins Ice Shelf, Antarctica

    A narrow bridge of floating ice that connected the Wilkins Ice Shelf, Antarctica, to two confining islands eventually collapsed in early April 2009. In the month preceding the collapse, we observed deformation of the ice bridge by means of satellite imagery and from an in situ GPS station. TerraSAR-X images (acquired in stripmap mode) were used to compile a time series. The ice bridge bent most strongly in its narrowest part (westerly), while the northern end (near Charcot Island) shifted in a northeasterly direction. In the south, the ice bridge experienced compressive strain parallel to its long axis. GPS position data were acquired a little south of the narrowest part of the ice bridge from 19 January 2009. Analysis of these data showed both cyclic and monotonic components of motion. Meteorological data and re-analysis of the output of weather-prediction models indicated that easterly winds were responsible for the cyclic motion component. In particular, wind stress on the rough ice melange that occupied the area to the east exerted significant pressure on the ice bridge. The collapse of the ice bridge began with crack formation in the southern section parallel to the long axis of the ice bridge and led to shattering of the southern part. Ultimately, the narrowest part, only 900 m wide, ruptured. The formation of many small icebergs released energy of >125 × 106 J

    We investigate the thermal properties of circular semiconductor quantum dots in high magnetic fields using finite temperature Hartree-Fock techniques. We demonstrate that for a given magnetic field strength quantum dots undergo various shape phase transitions as a function of temperature, and we outline possible observable consequences.Comment: In Press, Phys.     Completeness of the Trajectories of Particles Coupled to a General Force Field

    We analyze the extendability of the solutions to a certain second order differential equation on a Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g), which is defined by a general class of forces (both prescribed on MM or depending on the velocity). The results include the general time-dependent anholonomic case, and further refinements for autonomous systems or forces derived from a potential are obtained. These extend classical results for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems.
