This paper examines how monetary policy decisions in Brazil, regarding short term interest rates, have affected the term structure of interest rates. We apply an event study methodology in two distinct periods: between January 2000 and August 2003, right after the implementation of the inflation targeting in Brazil, and between September 2003 and July 2008. The main results are: 1) the surprise effects have decreased; 2) the explanation power has increased in the second period, indicating enhancement of monetary policy; 3) market participants adjust their expectations with greater advance; 4) the surprise effects of decisions on short term rates on the term structure of interest rates are now close to those found in the USA and Germany, but higher to those found in the UK and Italy. Therefore, the results indicate that fixed income market expectations are better adjusted to the Central Bank anti-inflationary policy.Política Monetária, Metas de Inflação, Estrutura a Termo da Taxa de Juros, Sinalização
Erythema multiforme induced by alendronate sodium in a geriatric patient : a case report and review of the literature
Erythema multiforme is an uncommon acute inflammatory disorder caused by exposure to microbes or drugs. Erythema multiforme minor typically affects only one mucosa and can be associated with symmetrical target skin lesions on the extremities. The disease usually occurs in patients in their 3rd and 4th decade of life, but can also affect children and adolescents. Alendronate sodium has been approved for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, but is associated with adverse events. This study reports and discusses a case of erythema multiforme minor. In addition, a literature search of articles published in PubMed-Medline was performed. The case was a 96-year-old woman who had taken alendronate. Intraoral clinical examination demonstrated hypersalivation and macrocheilia of the lower lip, associated with an ill-defined ulcer with erythematous borders measuring 20 mm in greatest diameter and covered with serofibrinous exudates. The aging of the population in developed and developing countries has increased the use of alendronate sodium to prevent osteoporosis and clinicians should be aware of possible oral adverse events associated with this drug
Vertical intertidal variation of organic matter stocks and patterns of sediment deposition in a mesotidal coastal wetland
Tidal coastal wetlands, common home to seagrass and salt marshes, are relevant carbon sinks due to their high
capacity to accumulate and store organic carbon in their sediments. Recent studies demonstrated that the spatial
variability of this organic carbon within the same wetland system can be significant. Some of the environmental
drivers of this spatial variability remain understudied and the selection of the most relevant ones can be context
dependent. Here we investigated the role of bed elevation, hydrodynamics, and habitat type (salt marsh and
seagrass) on the organic matter (OM) net deposition-resuspension rate and superficial sedimentary stocks (top 5
cm) at the tidal wetlands of the Ria Formosa, a mesotidal coastal lagoon in South Portugal. Results showed that
two vectors of spatial variation need to be considered to describe the intertidal sedimentary OM stocks: the bed
elevation that imposes a decrease of the hydroperiod and thus the change of habitat from the lower seagrass
Z. noltei to the upper saltmarsh S. maritimus, and the horizontal spatial variation along the secondary channels of
the lagoon that imposes a decrease in the current flow velocity magnitude. The multiple linear regression analyses, using data from 40 sampling points, explained 59% of the variation of the superficial sedimentary stocks
of OM in salt marshes and seagrasses of the Ria Formosa lagoon and revealed that stocks generally decrease with
elevation, yet with variation among sites and habitats. It was also found that the decrease of the OM net
deposition-resuspension rate with bed elevation was exponential. Our study emphasizes the importance of
considering multiple environmental drivers and spatial variation for regional estimations of organic matter (and
organic carbon) sedimentary stocks in coastal wetlands.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Decreased dentin tubules density and reduced thickness of peritubular dentin in hyperbilirubinemia-related green teeth
It is stated anecdotally that patients with liver diseases in childhood who develop green teeth have increased risk for rampant caries, which may be secondary to changes in dental structure. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that hyperbilirubinemia affects the dentin morphology of green teeth. Sixteen primary teeth were prepared and divided into two groups (green teeth, n = 8 and control, n = 8), which were transversely fractured across the cervical third of the dental crowns; dentin was prepared and sputter-coated with gold, and examined under a scanning electron microscope. The mean density and mean diameter of dentin tubules, as well as the thickness of peritubular dentin, were compared. Hyperbilirubinemia was associated with a decrease in the density of the dentin tubules (p< .01) and the thickness of peritubular dentin of green teeth (p< .01). There was a correlation between childhood hyperbilirubinemia and changes in the dentin morphology, including a decrease in the density of the dentin tubules and a reduction in the thickness of peritubular dentin in green teeth

Solvent-Free Microwave Extraction of Thymus mastichina Essential Oil: Influence on Their Chemical Composition and on the Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities
This article belongs to the Special Issue Antiradical, Chemopreventive and Antimicrobial Analysis of Bioactive SubstancesSolvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) is a combination of microwave heating and dry distillation performed at atmospheric pressure without the addition of water or organic solvents that has been proposed as a green method for the extraction of essential oils from aromatic and medicinal herbs. In this work, SFME and the conventional techniques of steam distillation (SD) and hydrodistillation (HD) were compared with respect to the extraction and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Thymus mastichina essential oil. The main constituent of essential oils obtained using different methods was 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol). The results showed that the essential oils extracted by means of SFME in 30 min were quantitatively (yield) and qualitatively (aromatic profile) similar to those obtained using conventional HD over 120 min. In addition, SFME generates less waste and less solvent, consumes less energy, and provides a higher yield for a shorter extraction time, which is advantageous for the extraction of the T. mastichina essential oil compared to SD. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the T. mastichina essential oil obtained from either SFME or conventional extraction methods (SD or HD) showed a similar pattern. Large-scale experiments using this SFME procedure showed a potential industrial application. The authors acknowledge the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER), and COMPETE 2020 for their financial support under theresearch project “The development of dermo-biotechnological applications using natural resourcesin the Beira and Serra da Estrela regions—DermoBio”, ref.
