    Keep your distance: People sit farther away from a man with schizophrenia versus diabetes

    Although concrete behavior—such as avoidance, discrimination, rejection—is foundational to most definitions of stigma, knowledge of psychiatric stigma has been constructed mostly on the basis of measurement of self-reported attitudes, beliefs, and feelings. To help fill this gap, the current study examined avoidance behavior in psychiatric stigma. That is, we predicted that people would seek more physical distance from a man with a psychiatric problem than a man with a medical problem. One hundred fourteen undergraduates expected to meet a man with either Type II diabetes or schizophrenia. After completing several measures of self-reported stigma, participants eventually moved to an adjacent room and sat in one of several seats that systematically varied in their proximity to a seat ostensibly occupied by the target man. Results indicated that the expectation of meeting a man with schizophrenia, compared with diabetes, led to greater desired social distance, greater self-reported fear, and higher appraisals of the man’s dangerousness and unpredictability. More importantly, participants elected to sit farther away from the ostensible man with schizophrenia. This pattern of findings offers behavioral evidence of the psychiatric stigma phenomenon that has mostly been documented via measurement of self-reported attitudes and impressions. We hope that these results stimulate renewed interest in measuring stigma-relevant behavior in the laboratory setting. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved

    Κ=We±Ί\rm \Psi= W e^{\pm \Phi} quantum cosmological solutions for Class A Bianchi Models

    Full text link
    We find solutions for quantum Class A Bianchi models of the form Κ=We±Ί\rm \Psi=W e^{\pm \Phi} generalizing the results obtained by Moncrief and Ryan in standard quantum cosmology. For the II and IX Bianchi models there are other solutions Ί~2\rm \tilde\Phi_2, Ί~9\rm \tilde\Phi_9 to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for which Κ\rm \Psi is necessarely zero, in contrast with solutions found in supersymmetric quantum cosmology.Comment: 15 pages, Late

    An Integrative Neurological Model for Basic Observable Human Behavior

    Get PDF
    The scientific method uncovers information from the natural world in small increments. This spurs the design of models to explain how the pieces fit together and to identify future targets of research. This is especially the case in psychology, where visualizing concepts is an advantageous practice. One all too common criticism of cognitive and behavioral models in psychology is the lack of a biological basis. This paper aims to alleviate part of this issue by integrating currently understood biological and neurological mechanisms that drive psychological phenomena into a predictive and descriptive model for basic human behavior. To accomplish this task, this paper explores numerous scientific reviews and studies regarding sensory perception, emotion, learning, and memory. This paper also features original research about decision making. Creating this model is a necessary first step for targeting possible future research and clinical practices related to human behavior

    On Saturday, September 19th, local citizens, historians, Civil War enthusiasts, and the rare college student alike converged at the LancasterHistory.org Campus of History for the second day of the President James Buchanan National Symposium. The theme for the symposium was The Worlds of Thaddeus Stevens and James Buchanan: Race, Gender, and Politics in the Civil War Era, thus it featured the lives of two of Lancaster, Pennsylvania’s most prominent historical residents and two of the most colorful characters of the Civil War era [excerpt

    Joshua Chamberlain on Mars: Chambermania and Beyond!

    Full text link
    You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to observe one fact about Mars: it has a lot of rocks. While each is typically given a name based on protocols of scientific classification, many are known by informal, often humorous names like Grandma and Space Ghost. And now on Mars, there’s a rock for fans of Civil War history— Chamberlain, named of course for Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the hero of Little Round Top [excerpt]
