Lifetime Differences, direct CP Violation and Partial Widths in D0 Meson Decays to K+K- and pi+pi-
We describe several measurements using the decays D0->K+K- and pi+pi-. We
find the ratio of partial widths, Gamma(D0->K+K-)/Gamma(D0->pi+pi-), to be
2.96+/-0.16+/-0.15, where the first error is statistical and the second is
systematic. We observe no evidence for direct CP violation, obtaining A_CP(KK)
= (0.0+/-2.2+/-0.8)% and A_CP(pipi = (1.9+/-3.2+/-0.8)%. In the limit of no CP
violation we measure the mixing parameter y_CP = -0.012+/-0.025+/-0.014 by
measuring the lifetime difference between D0->K+ K- or pi+pi- and the CP
neutral state, D0->K-pi+. We see no evidence for mixing.Comment: 14 pages postscript, also available through

Anti-Search for the Glueball Candidate f_J(2220) in Two-Photon Interactions
Using 13.3 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- data recorded with the CLEO II and CLEO II.V
detector configurations at CESR, we have searched for f_J(2220) decays to
K^0_{S} K^0_{S} in untagged two-photon interactions. We report an upper limit
on the product of the two-photon partial width and the branching fraction,
Gamma_gamma gamma cdot B (f_J(2220) to K^0_{S} K^0_{S}) of less than 1.1 eV at
the 95% C.L: systematic uncertainties are included. This dataset is four times
larger than that used in the previous CLEO publication.Comment: 10 pages postscript, also available through

Further Experimental Studies of Two-Body Radiative \Upsilon Decays
Continuing our studies of radiative Upsilon(1S) decays, we report on a search
for Upsilon to gamma eta and Upsilon to gamma f_{J}(2220) in 61.3 pb^{-1} of
e^{+}e^{-} data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage
Ring. For the gamma eta search the three decays of the eta meson to
pi^{+}pi^{-}pi^{0}, pi^{0}pi^{0}pi^{0}, and gamma gamma were investigated. We
found no candidate events in the two (3\pi)^{0} modes and no significant excess
over expected backgrounds in the gamma gamma mode to set a limit on the
branching fraction of B(Upsilon to gamma eta) < 2.1 x 10^{-5} at 90% C.L. The
three charged two-body final states h h-bar (h = pi^{+}, K^{+}, p) were
investigated for f_{J}(2220) production, with one, one, and two events found,
respectively. Limits at 90% C.L. of B(\Upsilon to gamma f_{J}) x B(f_{J} to h
h-bar) ~ 1.5 x 10^{-5} have been set for each of these modes. We compare our
results to measurements of other radiative Upsilon decays, to measurements of
radiative J/psi decays, and to theoretical predictions.Comment: 19 pages postscript, also available through

Measurement of the Mass Splittings between the States
We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for
the radiative transitions: Upsilon(2S)->gamma+chi_b(J=0,1,2). The masses of the
chi_b states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The
ratio of mass splittings between the chi_b substates,
r==(M[J=2]-M[J=1])/(M[J=1]-M[J=0]) with M the chi_b mass, provides information
on the nature of the bbbar confining potential. We find
r(1P)=0.54+/-0.02+/-0.02. This value is in conflict with the previous world
average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P)<r(2P);
i.e., that this mass splittings ratio is smaller for the chi_b(1P) triplet than
for the chi_b(2P) triplet.Comment: 11 page postscript file, postscript file also available through

Equations for the estimation of strong ground motions from shallow crustal earthquakes using data from Europe and the Middle East : vertical peak ground acceleration and spectral acceleration
This article presents equations for the estimation of vertical strong ground motions caused by shallow crustal earthquakes with magnitudes M w 5 and distance to the surface projection of the fault less than 100km. These equations were derived by weighted regression analysis, used to remove observed magnitude-dependent variance, on a set of 595 strong-motion records recorded in Europe and the Middle East. Coefficients are included to model the effect of local site effects and faulting mechanism on the observed ground motions. The equations include coefficients to model the observed magnitude-dependent decay rate. The main findings of this study are that: short-period ground motions from small and moderate magnitude earthquakes decay faster than the commonly assumed 1/r, the average effect of differing faulting mechanisms is similar to that observed for horizontal motions and is not large and corresponds to factors between 0.7 (normal and odd) and 1.4 (thrust) with respect to strike-slip motions and that the average long-period amplification caused by soft soil deposits is about 2.1 over those on rock sites
Synaptic processes and immune-related pathways implicated in Tourette syndrome.
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder of complex genetic architecture involving multiple interacting genes. Here, we sought to elucidate the pathways that underlie the neurobiology of the disorder through genome-wide analysis. We analyzed genome-wide genotypic data of 3581 individuals with TS and 7682 ancestry-matched controls and investigated associations of TS with sets of genes that are expressed in particular cell types and operate in specific neuronal and glial functions. We employed a self-contained, set-based association method (SBA) as well as a competitive gene set method (MAGMA) using individual-level genotype data to perform a comprehensive investigation of the biological background of TS. Our SBA analysis identified three significant gene sets after Bonferroni correction, implicating ligand-gated ion channel signaling, lymphocytic, and cell adhesion and transsynaptic signaling processes. MAGMA analysis further supported the involvement of the cell adhesion and trans-synaptic signaling gene set. The lymphocytic gene set was driven by variants in FLT3, raising an intriguing hypothesis for the involvement of a neuroinflammatory element in TS pathogenesis. The indications of involvement of ligand-gated ion channel signaling reinforce the role of GABA in TS, while the association of cell adhesion and trans-synaptic signaling gene set provides additional support for the role of adhesion molecules in neuropsychiatric disorders. This study reinforces previous findings but also provides new insights into the neurobiology of TS
First Observation of the Exclusive Decays Lambda_c to Lambda pi+pi+pi-pi0 and Lambda_c to Lambda omega pi+
Using data recorded by the CLEO III detector at CESR, we report on the first
measurements of the branching fractions for decays of the Lambda_c^+ charmed
baryon into (Lambda pi+ pi+ pi- pi0) and (Lambda omega pi+). All rates are
measured with respect to the p K- pi+ decay mode. The relative branching
fractions are 0.39 +- 0.09(stat.) +- 0.09(syst.) and 0.24 +- 0.06(stat.) +-
0.06(syst.) for the (Lambda pi+ pi+ pi- pi0) and (Lambda omega pi+) modes,
respectively. The data also suggest decays of the Lambda_c^+ via (Lambda eta
pi+, eta --> pi+ pi- pi0) with a rate which is consistent with previous
measurements of the branching fraction of Lambda_c^+ to (Lambda eta pi+, eta
--> gamma gamma). The measurements indicate that the omega and eta sub-modes
comprise 87+-13% of the (Lambda pi+ pi+ pi- pi0) final state. We set an upper
limit on the contribution from non-omega and non-eta modes of 0.13 at the 90%
confidence level.Comment: 15 pages including 5 figures; submitted to Phys Rev
Measurement of the Ratio of Branching Fractions of the Upsilon(4S) to Charged and Neutral B Mesons
The ratio of charged and neutral B meson production at the Upsilon(4S),
f_{+-}/f_{00}, is measured through the decays B bar -> D* l- nu_l bar,
reconstructed using a partial reconstruction method where the D* is detected
only through a pion daughter from the decay D* -> D pi. Using data collected by
the CLEO II detector, the charged and neutral B decays are measured in such a
way that their ratio is independent of decay model, limited mainly by the
uncertainty in the relative efficiency for detecting neutral and charged pions.
This measurement yields the ratio of production fractions times the ratio of
semileptonic branching fractions, f_{+-}b_{+}/f_{00}b_0. Assuming that b_+/b_0
is equal to the lifetime ratio tau_+/tau_0 and using the world average value of
tau_+/tau_0 as input, we obtain f_{+-}/f_{00}=1.058+- 0.084+- 0.136.Comment: 18 pages postscript, also available through

A search for the decay
We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay in a data sample of 82 fb collected with the {\sl BABAR}
detector at the PEP-II B-factory. Signal events are selected by examining the
properties of the system recoiling against either a reconstructed hadronic or
semileptonic charged-B decay. Using these two independent samples we obtain a
combined limit of
at the 90% confidence level. In addition, by selecting for pions rather than
kaons, we obtain a limit of using only the hadronic B reconstruction method.Comment: 7 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
