High rates of female breeding success and offspring survival are
the two major factors in productivity of any commercial livestock
industry. To im prove breeding success and offspring survival, the
herd m anager will establish selection criteria and choose which
males and females will breed. The genetics or characteristics of future
animals will reflect their parentage.
Selection pressure is evident in both wild and captive populations
of herbivores. Predators, environment, and human harvest
strategies are a few forces which influence the characteristics of freeranging
populations of reindeer, caribou, moose, wapiti, etc. In
livestock production systems, herd managers often breed for specific
characteristics such as larger body size, high birth and growth rates,
leanness, etc. A single color or combination of colors has been
another characteristic often selected by purebred cattle producers as
well as reindeer herders
Detailed stratigraphic correlation of the Neogene sedimentary sequences on the Ontong Java Plateau by well logging; ODP Sites 803, 805, 806, 807, and DSDP Site 586
We used well logs, in some cases combined with shipboard physical properties measurements to make more complete profiles and to correlate between sites on the Ontong Java Plateau. By comparing sediment bulk density, velocity, and resistivity logs from adjacent holes at the same site, we showed that even subtle features of the well logs are reproducible and are caused by variations in sedimentation. With only minor amounts of biostratigraphic information, we could readily correlate these sedimentary features across the entire top of the Ontong Java Plateau, demonstrating that for most of the Neogene the top of the plateau is a single sedimentary province. We found it more difficult, but still possible, to correlate in detail sites from the top of the plateau to those drilled on the flanks. The pattern of sedimentation rate variation down the flank of the plateau cannot be interpreted as simply controlled by dissolution. Site 805, in particular, oscillates between accumulating sediment at roughly the same rate as cores on top of the Ontong Java Plateau, and accumulating sediment as slowly as Site 803, 200 m deeper in the water column. These oscillations do not match earlier reconstructions of central Pacific carbonate compensation depth variations

Reindeer in western Alaska have been described as a free-ranging,
semi-domesticated animal. Herd management is minimal and animals are
less tractable when compared to domestic livestock. Consequently, when
reindeer are moved through a corral system they are more susceptible to
stress. Stress can occur as a result of circumstances that are related to
nutritional, social (crowding), induced psychological or physiological
trauma, and parasitic problems, all of which can be interrelated. Excessive
stress can reduce herd productivity by lowering reproductive rates, weight
gains, survivorship, and immune response. Stress during corralling can
result in trauma from overcrowding and trampling, inadequate food and
water, disturbance of normal behavioral patterns, and exhaustion. Proper
corral design and its operation play a vital role in both prevention of injury
and the level of stress the reindeer experience
Racial Profiling and the Fourth Amendment: Applying the Minority Victim Perspective to Ensure Equal Protection Under the Law
Racial profiling was once thought the figment of an overactive minority imagination. Yet, recent media coverage has thrust the reality of racial bias in law enforcement into the national spotlight. Despite its newfound popularity, the real battle for equal protection and justice under the law has been quietly raging across American courtrooms for decades, and it is a battle that people of color continue to lose. This Note examines the judiciary\u27S tendency to excise racial perceptions and bias from its analysis of racial profiling cases under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments. Focusing on the recent profiling case of Brown v. City of Oneonta, this Note suggests that the imposition of race ignorant standards is itself a subtle but powerful vestige of racial bias in the courtroom. By more broadly considering the subjective perceptions of both police and minority victims of discriminatory police practices, courts will be more responsive to the coercive nature of certain police stops, as well as the discriminatory intent behind abusive police investigations
Archaeological Investigation of a Spring Lake Lot for Joe\u27s Crab Shack Parking
On August 19 and 25, 1997, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an intensive survey for cultural resources at the proposed location of a parking lot for Joe\u27s Crab Shack Restaurants along Spring Lake, Hays County, Texas. The work was contracted by Southwest Texas State University (SWTSU) and conducted under Texas Antiquities Permit number 1877. Upon completion of the survey and subsurface testing, CAR determined that no cultural resources would be impacted by the planned parking lot construction. CAR therefore recommended that the project sponsor be allowed to proceed as planned with the proposed project and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) has concurred

insects, weather, diseases, and-ultimately-dam condition.  In addition, reindeer calves on the
Seward Peninsula are also subjected to annual herding
and handling. The effects of any of these factors
were unknown in reindeer herds on the Seward Peninsula.
Our objectives were to determine the causes
of mortality, particularly through purportedly high grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) predation; and to determine
the survival rates of reindeer calves in one
herd and provide management recommendations,
based on a simple model, attempting to increase
the herd numbers
Downhole logging as a paeoceanographic tool on ocean drilling program leg 138: Interface between high-resolution stratigraphy and regional syntheses
On Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 138, standard shipboard procedures were modified to allow for the real-time monitoring of several laboratory core-scanning systems that provide centimeter-scale measurements of saturated bulk density, magnetic susceptibility and digital color reflectance. These continuous, high-resolution data sets were used to ensure the proper offset of multiple holes and to splice together complete sedimentary sections. Typically, the spliced, continuousediment sections were found to be about 10% longer than the section drilled, as measured by the length of the drill string. While the source of this elongation is not yet fully understood, it must be compensated for in order to property determine sediment fluxes and mass accumulation rates. Downhole logging, in conjunction with inverse correlation techniques provided a means to determine where the distortion occurred and to correct back to true in sire depths. Downhole logging also provides a means, through the generation of synthetic seismograms, of precisely relating the paleoceanographic events found in the core record to the high-resolution seismic record. Once correlated to the seismic record, the spatial and temporal extent of paleoceanographic events can be traced well beyond the borehole. Most seismic events in the equatorial Pacific are related to rapid changes in carbonate contenthat, in turn, are related to both productivity events (often expressed as monospecific laminated diatom oozes) and times of enhanced dissolution. While many of these events may have oceanwide extent, others, like the absence of carbonate in the late-Miocene to Recent in the Guatemala Basin have been shown to be regional and confined to only the deeper portions of the Guatemala Basin. As we identify and trace specific paleoceanographic events in the seismic record, we can begin to explore the response of the ocean through gradients of latitude, productivity, and depth
