Theory of electron spin resonance in bulk topological insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3
We report a theoretical study of electron spin resonance in bulk topological
insulators, such as Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3. Using the effective four-band
model, we find the electron energy spectrum in a static magnetic field and
determine the response to electric and magnetic dipole perturbations,
represented by oscillating electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to the
static field. We determine the associated selection rules and calculate the
absorption spectra. This enables us to separate the effective orbital and spin
degrees of freedom and to determine the effective g-factors for electrons and

Closing the Loophole: A Case Study of Organizing for More Equitable and Affordable Access to Health Care in San Francisco
This paper presents in-depth case study of a successful hybrid political and community organizing campaign to ensure equitable access to health care through the perspective of a grassroots San Francisco community-based organization, the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), which has been organizing low-income Chinese immigrants for over four decades. First, it outlines the Health Care Security Ordinance (HCSO), which, since its passage in 2006, has established a near-universal health care access program, helping to make health care accessible and affordable to individuals living and working in San Francisco. Then it presents the campaign to save the HCSO, focusing on CPAās participation in the HCSO coalition. Finally, it discusses health care as it relates to the San Franciscoās affordability crisis and the political economic context in which it is taking place. Despite the limitations inherent in small case studies like this one, it nevertheless provides a valuable opportunity to better understand how one politically progressive city attempted to address the problem of grossly inequitable health care access through the lens of community organizing, advocacy, and coalition building. San Francisco, like many major American cities today, is being confronted with rapid gentrification and growing economic inequalityāthe backdrop to the HCSO. Through innovative experiments in social responsibility like the HCSO, however, the city has made leaps in health care access. It concludes with lessons learned from local organizing and advocacy to save the HCSO as these may inform other local efforts to promote health care for all
Theory and Calibration of Swap Market Models
This paper introduces a general framework for market models, named Market Model Approach, through the concept of admissible sets of for-ward swap rates spanning a given tenor structure. We relate this concept to results in graph theory by showing that a set is admissible if and only if the associated graph is a tree. This connection enables us to enumerate all admissible models for a given tenor structure. Three main classes are identified within this framework, and correspond to the co-terminal, co-initial, and co-sliding model. We prove that the LIBOR market model is the only admissible model of a co-sliding type. By focusing on the co-terminal model in a lognormal setting, we develop and compare several approximating analytical formulae for caplets, while swaptions can be priced by a simple Black-type formula. A novel calibration technique is introduced to allow simultaneous calibration to caplet and swaption prices. Empirical calibration of the co-terminal model is shown to be faster, more robust and more efficient than the same procedure applied to the LIBOR market model. We then argue that the co-terminal approach is the simplest and most convenient market model for pricing and hedging a large variety of exotic interest-rate derivatives.Swap Market Model, Cap, Swaption, Calibration, Graph Theory
Arsenic Contamination in Groundwater in Vietnam: An Overview and Analysis of the Historical, Cultural, Economic, and Political Parameters in the Success of Various Mitigation Options
Although arsenic is naturally present in the environment, 99% of human exposure to arsenic is through ingestion. Throughout history, arsenic is known as āthe king of poisonsā; it is mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. Even in smaller concentrations, it accumulates in the body and takes decades before any physical symptoms of arsenic poisoning shows. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the safe concentration of arsenic in drinking water is 10 Āµg/L. However, this limit is often times ignored until it is decades too late and people begin showing symptoms of having been poisoned.
This is the current situation for Vietnam, whose legal arsenic concentration limit is 50 Āµg/L, five times higher than the WHO guidelines. Groundwater in Vietnam was already naturally high in arsenic due to arsenic-rich soils releasing arsenic into groundwater. Then, in the past half century, with the use of arsenic-laden herbicides dispersed during the Vietnam War and subsequent industrial developments, the levels of bio-available arsenicals has dangerously spiked. With the proliferation of government-subsidized shallow tube-wells in the past two decades, shallow groundwater has become the primary source for drinking and irrigation water in Vietnam. This is a frightening trend, because this groundwater has arsenic concentrations up to 3050 Āµg/L, primarily in the +3 and +5 oxidation states, the most readily available oxidation states for bioaccumulation.
This thesis argues that measures must be taken immediately to remedy the high concentration of arsenic in groundwater, which in Vietnam is the primary and, in some cases, the sole source of water for domestic consumption and agricultural production. Although there are numerous technologies available for treating arsenic in groundwater, not all of them are suited for Vietnam. By analyzing the historical, cultural, economic, and political parameters of Vietnam, several optimal treatments of groundwater for drinking water emerged as most recommended, a classification that is based on their local suitability, social acceptability, financial feasibility, and governmental support. Further research on irrigation water treatment is proposed due to the need for sustainable crop production, the safe ingestion of rice and vegetables, and the continued growth of Vietnamās economy, which is heavily dependent on agriculture
Self-Efficacy and Sexual Transmitted Disease Prevention Among College Women
According to the Center of Disease Control (2002), sexual transmitted diseases (STDs) are on the rise, especially among women. By far, women bear the greatest burden of STDs because they suffer more frequently and develop more serious complications than men. This study explored the relationship between self-efficacy and safe sex behaviors among college women. The data was collected by using questionnaires from the General Perceived Self-Efficacy Scale (GPSE) and the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale(CUSES). The sample was composed of 38 unmarried female college students between the ages of 18 and 25 years-of-age who had been sexually active within the last 3 months. It was expected that women who have high score in GPSE would be more likely to engage in safe sex. The findings indicated there was no correlation between self-efficacy and safe sex practice

Tofacitinib in the management of active psoriatic arthritis: patient selection and perspectives.
Tofacitinib is an oral Janus kinase inhibitor approved for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis (PsA). It provides an alternative option for patients who have had an inadequate response and tolerance to other disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). It has demonstrated comparable efficacy to biologics, is effective in the management of treatment resistant disease, and is reported to improve enthesitis, dactylitis, and radiographic progression. Tofacitinib is also associated with an increased risk of serious infections, malignancy, and laboratory abnormalities. There is currently a large armamentarium of therapies for psoriatic arthritis, and choosing among treatments can be challenging. Due to this wide selection, a thorough assessment of psoriatic disease phenotype, patient preference, disease presentation, and comorbidities is critical. An Attempt to Probe the Radio Jet Collimation Regions in NGC 4278, NGC 4374 (M84), and NGC 6166
NRAO Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of NGC 4278, NGC 4374
(M84), NGC 6166, and M87 (NGC 4486) have been made at 43 GHz in an effort to
image the jet collimation region. This is the first attempt to image the first
three sources at 43 GHz using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)
techniques. These three sources were chosen because their estimated black hole
mass and distance implied a Schwarzschild radius with large angular size,
giving hope that the jet collimation regions could be studied. Phase
referencing was utilize for the three sources because of their expected low
flux densities. M87 was chosen as the calibrator for NGC 4374 because it
satisfied the phase referencing requirements: nearby to the source and
sufficiently strong. Having observed M87 for a long integration time, we have
detected its sub-parsec jet, allowing us to confirm previous high resolution
observations made by Junor, Biretta & Livio, who have indicated that a wide
opening angle was seen near the base of the jet. Phase referencing successfully
improved our image sensitivity, yielding detections and providing accurate
positions for NGC 4278, NGC 4374 and NGC 6166. These sources are point
dominated, but show suggestions of extended structure in the direction of the
large-scale jets. However, higher sensitivity will be required to study their
sub-parsec jet structure
Effect of imputation on gene network reconstruction from single-cell RNA-seq data
Despite the advances in single-cell transcriptomics, the reconstruction of gene regulatory networks remains challenging. Both the large amount of zero counts in experimental data and the lack of a consensus preprocessing pipeline for single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data make it hard to infer networks. Imputation can be applied in order to enhance gene-gene correlations and facilitate downstream analysis. However, it is unclear what consequences imputation methods have on the reconstruction of gene regulatory networks. To study this, we evaluate the differences on the performance and structure of reconstructed networks before and after imputation in single-cell data. We observe an inflation of gene-gene correlations that affects the predicted network structures and may decrease the performance of network reconstruction in general. However, within the modest limits of achievable results, we also make a recommendation as to an advisable combination of algorithms while warning against the indiscriminate use of imputation before network reconstruction in general
