    Wood Energy Plants and Biomass Supply Chain in Southern Italy

    AbstractIn the last ten years in Italy several companies of the bio energy industry, attracted by Government subsidies planned to build dedicated power that use biomass as their main fuel. The biomass for energy purposes, coming from farms, forestry, timber industry and Short Rotation Forestry (SRF) for energy, can provide various environmental and socio-economic benefits. First of all, the production of forest biomass for energy involves the reduction of CO2 emissions and the improvement of forest functions, such as hydrogeological and biodiversity conservation. Moreover, forest biomass consumption could contribute to the socio-economic development of rural areas, through the restoration of agro-forest activities and technological advances in the bio-energy field. The primary goal of this study is to analyse the local forest wood supply chain. Therefore, field surveys have been done in order to classify the management and the characteristics of the woodchips supply chain (wood sub-product availability, forest enterprises, working systems, forest woodchips quality)

    The permanence in natural environments and the contact with nature, even in urban areas of proximity (neighbourhood green areas or condominiums), have a relaxing and regenerative power and stimulate the fundamental vital processes. The relationship with open spaces and greenery is an element that promotes personal and collective well-being already in everyday life. This has become even more relevant during the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis, which has significantly changed individual and social life habits, upsetting interpersonal relationships and the relationship with the outside world often experienced from a window. In this context, the Project "Tranquillity Areas Mapping" is inserted in the Sila National Park, of which we report the first results. Carried out in collaboration between CNR-ISAFOM, Department of Agraria of the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, and Sila National Park, the project aims to identify Areas of Tranquillity within the UNESCO Mab Area of the Park, based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative parameters that characterize them. In its initial stages (September 2019), the project has seen the activation of participatory processes with the involvement of institutions and key local actors. The work presented here deals with the relevance of participation in the planning and management processes of protected natural areas and, in particular, of national parks. The processes under study play an increasingly important role, especially during the COVID-19 emergency, which has accentuated the need to stimulate public interest in natural parks. Increasingly, natural parks are being recognized for their role in providing environmental ecosystem services. Among these, cultural ecosystem services include preserving those "oases of tranquility" more easily accessible to the population of the territories concerned.  A number of participatory experiences carried out during the project are presented. Several convergent approaches were used, making the most of both e-participation and more traditional forms of confrontation (in-depth interviews, focus groups). Finally, the methods used, and the results obtained from work carried out are indicated as potential developments for mapping the quiet areas of the Sila National Park, in view of sustainable management of the latter

    Life Monza: project description and actions’ updating

    The introduction of Low Emission Zones, urban areas subject to road traffic restrictions in order to ensure compliance with the air pollutants limit values set by the European Directive on ambient air quality (2008/50/EC), is a common and well-established action in the administrative government of cities. The impacts on air quality improvement are widely analysed, whereas the effects and benefits concerning the noise have not been addressed in a comprehensive manner. As a consequence, the definition, the criteria for the analysis and the management methods of a Noise Low Emission Zone are not clearly expressed and shared yet. The LIFE MONZA project (Methodologies fOr Noise low emission Zones introduction And management - LIFE15 ENV/IT/000586) addresses these issues. The first objective of the project, co-funded by the European Commission, is to introduce an easy-replicable method for the identification and the management of the Noise Low Emission Zone, an urban area subject to traffic restrictions, whose impacts and benefits regarding noise issues will be analyzed and tested in the pilot area of the city of Monza, located in Northern Italy. Background conditions, structure, objectives of the project and actions’ progress will be discussed in this article

    Radiological Protection in Industries Involving NORM: A (Graded) Methodological Approach to Characterize the Exposure Situations

    The interest in radiation protection in industrial sectors involving Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) is increasingly growing. This is due also to the recent implementation of the European Council Directive 59/2013/Euratom which in Italy and in the other European Union Member States extends the field of application to industrial sectors never involved before. This paper reports main results of a research project on radiation protection in industries involving NORM carried out in Italy aimed to provide useful tools for stakeholders to comply new legal obligations. The project activities were mainly focused on different aspects relevant to the NORM involving industries, accounting for the positive list reported in the Italian law. Firstly, the inventory of the industries currently operating in Italy in order to identify the industrial sectors with an important radiological impact on population and workers was updated. Based on this information, a general methodology was elaborated taking into account a graded approach. The first phase consists in the identification and characterization of the most critical exposure scenarios and of the radiological content of NORMs involved in the different phases of the industrial processes. In the second phase calculation methods were developed for dose estimation for workers and members of public. These tools require the use of existing and well tested calculation codes, and the development of a dedicated user-friendly software

    Phase II trial of bevacizumab and dose/dense chemotherapy with cisplatin and metronomic daily oral etoposide in advanced non-small-cell-lung cancer patients.

    Bevacizumab, is a humanized monoclonal antibody to vasculo-endothelial- growth-factor, with anticancer activity in non-small-cell-lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Our previous results from a dose/finding phase I trial in NSCLC patients, demonstrated the anti-angiogenic effects and toxicity of a newest bevacizumab-based combination with fractioned cisplatin and daily oral etoposide. We designed a phase II trial to evaluate in advanced NSCLC patients the antitumor activity and the safety of this novel regimen. In particular, 45 patients (36 males and 9 females), with a mean age of 54 years, an ECOG ≤2, stage III B/IV and NSCLC (28 adenocarcinomas, 11 squamous-cell carcinomas, 2 large-cell carcinomas, 4 undifferentiated carcinomas), were enrolled. They received cisplatin (30 mg/sqm, days 1-3), oral etoposide (50 mg, days 1-15) and bevacizumab (5 mg/kg, day 3) every 3 weeks (mPEBev regimen). Patients who achieved an objective response or stable disease received maintenance treatment with bevacizumab in combination with erlotinib until progression. Grade I-II hematological, mucosal toxicity and alopecia were the most common adverse events. The occurrence of infections (17%), thromboembolic events (4.4%) and severe mood depression (6.7%) was also recorded. A partial response was achieved in 31 (68.8%) patients, disease remained stable in 8 (17.8%) and disease progressed in 6 (13.3%) with a progression-free-survival of 9.53 months (95% CI, 7.7-11.46). Our bio-chemotherapy regimen resulted very active in advanced NSCLC, however, the toxicity associated with the treatment requires strict selection of the patients to enroll in future studies. © 2011 Landes Bioscience

    Disciplinary problems among high achiever students: the types and the causes

    This qualitative study has been done to 24 teachers and 72 students from various secondary schools in Penang, Malaysia, in order to investigate the effect of between class ability grouping (BCAG) on high achiever secondary school students. Studies reported that BCAG triggered correspondence bias among teachers, which eventually affect them to show different perception and expectations towards high achiever classes (HAC) and low achiever classes (LAC) students. Symbolic interaction theories explained that individuals tend to be affected by others’ expectation, and therefore behave in a way they were expected to. Therefore, according to the previous studies on BCAG, it was assumed that HAC students would achieve better and would not be significantly involved in disciplinary problems. After semi-structured interview had been conducted in order to collect the data, and two-cycled analyses method, namely In-Vivo and Thematic Analyses had been operated in order to analyze the massive amount of qualitative data, the it was discovered that HAC students were involved with disciplinary problems, such as being disrespectful to teachers, paying less attention in the classroom, neglecting assignments and doing external work during classes. Other findings of this study showed that the disciplinary problems among HAC are related to their self-esteem types due to locus of control difference, as well as bigger issues apart from the competition among themselves. School management system, BCAG itself, reciprocal envy between HAC and LAC students, as well as their inclination towards tuition centers contributed to disciplinary problems among HAC students
