High genetic diversity and small genetic variation among populations of Magnolia wufengensis (Magnoliaceae), revealed by ISSR and SRAP markers
Background: Genetic diversity and genetic variation of 10 populations
and subpopulations of Magnolia wufengensis , a new and endangered
endemic species, were examined by inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR)
and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) molecular markers.
Compared with other endangered endemic Magnolia taxa, M. wufengensis
holds a relatively high level of genetic variation. Result: Total
genetic diversity was found to be 87.7% for ISSR and 88.0% for SRAP
markers. For polymorphic loci (P), the effective mean number of alleles
(Ae) was 1.414 for ISSR markers and 1.458 for SRAP markers, while the
mean expected heterozygosity (H) was 0.256 using ISSR and 0.291 for
SRAP markers. Within-population variation was estimated for P as 74.9%
using ISSR and 74.6% with SRAP markers; the number of alleles Ae was
1.379 with ISSR and 1.397 for SRAP and H 0.235 with ISSR and 0.247 for
SRAP markers. Conclusion: The analysis of molecular variation of both
ISSR and SRAP marker systems indicated that most genetic variation is
within populations, with values of 90.64% and 82.92% respectively.
Mantel tests indicated a moderate association between the two marker
systems and a low correlation between genetic and geographic distances.
High levels of genetic diversity and low levels of population
divergence suggest that genetic drift is not currently of great concern
for this species. Severe habitat loss and fragmentation, predominantly
ascribed to anthropogenic pressures, caused in-situ developing
restriction of this species. Action for conserving this rare species
for its long-term survival should be taken immediately
Analysis of the genetic relationships and diversity among 11 populations of Xanthoceras sorbifolia using phenotypic and microsatellite marker data
Background: Assessments of genetic diversity are essential for
germplasm characterization and exploitation. Molecular markers are
valuable tools for exploring genetic variation and identifying
germplasm. They play key roles in a Xanthoceras sorbifolia breeding
program. Results: We analyzed the genetic diversity of populations of
this species using 23 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci and data on
kernel oil content. The 11 populations included in the study were
distributed across a large geographic range in China. The kernel oil
content differed significantly among populations. The SSR marker
analysis detected high genetic diversity among the populations. All
SSRs were polymorphic, and we identified 80 alleles across the
populations. The number of alleles at each locus ranged from two to
six, averaging 3.48 per primer pair. The polymorphism information
content values ranged from 0.35 to 0.70, averaging 0.51. Expected
heterozygosity, observed heterozygosity, and Shannon's information
index calculations detected large genetic variations among populations
of different provenance. The high average number of alleles per locus
and the allelic diversity observed in the set of genotypes analyzed
indicated that the genetic base of this species was relatively wide.
The statistically significant positive correlation between genetic and
geographic distances suggested adaptations to local conditions.
Conclusions: Microsatellite markers can be used to efficiently
distinguish X. sorbifolia populations and assess their genetic
diversity. The information we have provided will contribute to the
conservation and management of this important plant genetic resource
Effect of acupuncture on lung cancer-related fatigue: study protocol for a multi-center randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND:
Fatigue is one of the primary symptoms in lung cancer, with a prevalence of 88.0% in survivors of cancer, and an even higher prevalence post resection surgery. Effective fatigue control after lung cancer surgery is important for patient recovery and quality of life. Some studies have shown that acupuncture might be effective in treating cancer-related fatigue; however, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of suitable sample size are limited.
METHOD/DESIGN:
This is a multi-center, patient-blinded RCT. A total of 320 eligible patients will be recruited in four centers and randomly assigned to either the acupuncture group or the sham acupuncture group in a 1:1 ratio. Treatment will be given twice per week for 12 sessions. Treatment will be given at acupoints GV20, GV29, CV12, CV6, CV4, and bilateral LI4, LR3, SP6, ST36. The primary outcome will be assessed using the Chinese version of The Brief Fatigue Inventory. The secondary outcomes will be measured using The European Organization for Research and The Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. The primary outcome will be assessed at all main points (baseline, the 3rd week, the 6th week, and at follow up time points) and the secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline and the 6th week. Intention-to-treat analysis will be used in this RCT.
DISCUSSION:
This trial protocol provides an example of the clinical application acupuncture treatment in the management of lung cancer-related fatigue. If the acupuncture treatment protocol confirms that acupuncture is an effective and safe option for lung cancer-related fatigue, it can be adopted as a standardized treatment.

Different brain responses to electro-acupuncture and moxibustion treatment in patients with Crohn's disease
This study aimed to investigate changes in resting state brain activity in remissive Crohn's Disease (CD) patients after electro-acupuncture or moxibustion treatment. Fifty-two CD patients and 36 healthy subjects were enrolled, and 36 patients were equally and randomly assigned to receive either electro-acupuncture or moxibustion treatment for twelve weeks. We used resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess Regional Homogeneity (ReHo) levels, and Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ) scores to evaluate disease severity and quality of life. The results show that (i) The ReHo levels in CD patients were significantly increased in cortical but decreased in subcortical areas, and the coupling between them was declined. (ii) Both treatments decreased CDAI, increased IBDQ scores, and normalized the ReHo values of the cortical and subcortical regions. (iii) ReHo changes in multiple cortical regions were significantly correlated with CDAI score decreases. ReHo changes in several subcortical regions in the electro-acupuncture group, and those of several cortical regions in the moxibustion group, were correlated with reduced CDAI. These findings suggest that both treatments improved cortex-subcortical coupling in remissive CD patients, but electro-acupuncture regulated homeostatic afferent processing network, while moxibustion mainly regulated the default mode network of the brain

Interpolation and Prediction of Spatiotemporal Data Based on XML Integrated with Grey Dynamic Model
Interpolation and prediction of spatiotemporal data are integral components of many real-world applications. Thus, approaches of interpolating and predicting spatiotemporal data have been extensively investigated. Currently, the grey dynamic model has been used to enhance the performance of interpolating and predicting spatiotemporal data. Meanwhile, the Extensible Markup Language (XML) has unique characteristics of information representation and exchange. In this paper, we first couple the grey dynamic model with the spatiotemporal XML model. Based on a definition of the position part of the spatiotemporal XML model, we extract the corresponding position information of each time interval and propose an algorithm for constructing an AVL tree to store them. Then, we present the architecture of an interpolating and predicting process and investigate change operations in positions. On this basis, we present an algorithm for interpolation and prediction of spatiotemporal data based on XML integrated with the grey dynamic model. Experimental results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed approach

A Survey of Marine Coastal Litters around Zhoushan Island, China and Their Impacts
Rapid development of the economy increased marine litter around Zhoushan Island. Social-ecological scenario studies can help to develop strategies to adapt to such change. To investigate the present situation of marine litter pollution, a stratified random sampling (StRS) method was applied to survey the distribution of marine coastal litters around Zhoushan Island. A univariate analysis of variance was conducted to access the amount of litter in different landforms that include mudflats, artificial and rocky beaches. In addition, two questionnaires were designed for local fishermen and tourists to provide social scenarios. The results showed that the distribution of litter in different landforms was significantly different, while the distribution of litter in different sampling points had no significant difference. The StRS survey showed to be a valuable method for giving a relative overview of beach litter around Zhoushan Island with less effort in a future survey. The questionnaire feedbacks helped to understand the source of marine litter and showed the impact on the local environment and economy. Based on the social-ecological scenarios, governance recommendations were provided in this paper
