Chagas Disease and Vectors in North Central Texas

All members of the large hemipterous family Reduviidae are predacious, but only members of the subfamily Triatominae feed exclusively on vertebrate blood. Readio (1927) noted that Mr. J. R. Lembert observed the common Pacific Coast species of Triatoma feeding on carrion and excrement. Lutz (1918) reported that Triatoma sanguisuga LeConte feeds on insects, including grasshoppers and potato beetles. Apparently neither of the above accounts illustrate normal feeding habits

    Demographic Strengthening of European Identity

The European Union is currently undergoing a major crisis within its institutions. Many observers think the EU is doomed, particularly in view of the current refugee situation, when in many countries the national agenda overrides the European project and the aggregate result is widely perceived as a failure of European-level governance. This skepticism is heightened by the UK referendum on continued EU membership. But few of these observers, focused on short-term political developments and crises, offer any long-term view of the alternatives. Is it realistic to return to the old system of nation states with closed borders and individual currencies? And does a majority of the European population want such an outcome

TIR-based dynamic liquid-level and flow-rate sensing and its application on centrifugal microfluidic platforms

    Get PDF
For the first time we present a technique for the spatio-temporally resolved localization of liquid-gas interfaces on centrifugal microfluidic platforms based on total internal reflection (TIR) at the channel wall. The simple setup consists of a line laser and a linear image sensor array mounted in a stationary instrument. Apart from identifying the presence of (usually unwanted) gas bubbles, the here described online meniscus detection allows to measure liquid volumes with a high precision of 1.9%. Additionally, flow rates and viscosities (range: 1-10.7 mPa s) can be sensed even during rotation at frequencies up to 30 Hz with a precision of 4.7% and 4.3%, respectively

A new species of biting midge, Forcipomyia (Euprojoannisia) bibaana, is described and illustrated from an adult male collected in the state Oaxaca, Mexico. The first records of Forcipomyia (E.) mortuifolii Saunders, F. (Lasiohelea) cornuta Saunders and F. (L.) stylifer (Lutz) are provided from Mexico as well as the first record of F. On αrγs(k)-perfect graphs

AbstractFor some integer k⩾0 and two graph parameters π and τ, a graph G is called πτ(k)-perfect, if π(H)−τ(H)⩽k for every induced subgraph H of G. For r⩾1 let αr and γr denote the r-(distance)-independence and r-(distance)-domination number, respectively. In (J. Graph Theory 32 (1999) 303–310), I. Zverovich gave an ingenious complete characterization of α1γ1(k)-perfect graphs in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs. In this paper we study αrγs(k)-perfect graphs for r,s⩾1. We prove several properties of minimal αrγs(k)-imperfect graphs. Generalizing Zverovich's main result in (J. Graph Theory 32 (1999) 303–310), we completely characterize α2r−1γr(k)-perfect graphs for r⩾1. Furthermore, we characterize claw-free α2γ2(k)-perfect graphs

For more than three decades, the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC) at Gardner-Webb University has hosted new student orientations and commencement exercises, indoor athletic events and theatrical productions, concerts, distinguished speakers, and more. It has served both the University and the surrounding community. “And it has done all that,” said Gardner-Webb President Dr. Frank Bonner, “through the Lutz and Yelton families’ generosity.”https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/gardner-webb-newscenter-archive/2811/thumbnail.jp
