    A locally nameless theory of objects

    This paper presents the formalisation of an object calculus in Isabelle/HOL highlighting the binder technique called locally nameless1. This techniques has its origins already in a note at the end of de Bruijn’s paper [5] introducing the classical de Bruijn indices. In the last few years, with the advent of mechanized proofs in the domain of programming languages, e.g. [1], this technique attracted new attention. The most recent work on locally nameless technique [2] provides cofinite quantification, necessary for proving non-trivial properties. Indeed the de Bruijn indices are often criticised, as being too technical, that is why alternative techniques are investigated. The de Bruijn indices method, however, is known to be reliable, and is often chosen in order to focus on aspects of programming languages unrelated to variable bindings. With locally nameless techniques, one expects to spend less time proving auxiliary lemmas dealing with variable bind- ings, but also to obtain theorems that are more convincing because closer to the paper version. Our contributions are a formalisation in Isabelle/HOL of ς-calculus; and an in depth comparison of both locally nameless and de Bruijn complete mechanisations including specification and proofs

    CTMC calculations of electron capture and ionization in collisions of multiply charged ions with elliptical Rydberg atoms

    We have performed classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) studies of electron capture and ionization in multiply charged (Q=8) ion-Rydberg atom collisions at intermediate impact velocities. Impact parallel to the minor and to the major axis, respectively, of the initial Kepler electron ellipse has been investigated. The important role of the initial electron momentum distribution found for singly charged ion impact is strongly disminished for higher projectile charge, while the initial spatial distribution remains important for all values of Q studied.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

The three major subsystems, the pressure garment assembly, the portable life-support system, and the oxygen purge system, are defined and described in detail as is the evolutionary process that culminated in each major subsystem component. Descriptions of ground-support equipment and the qualification testing process for component hardware are also presented

    High-ionization mid-infrared lines as black hole mass and bolometric luminosity indicators in active galactic nuclei

    We present relations of the black hole mass and the optical luminosity with the velocity dispersion and the luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV] high-ionization lines in the mid-infrared (MIR) for 28 reverberation-mapped active galactic nuclei. We used high-resolution Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph and Infrared Space Observatory Short Wavelength Spectrometer data to fit the profiles of these MIR emission lines that originate from the narrow-line region of the nucleus. We find that the lines are often resolved and that the velocity dispersion of [Ne V] and [O IV] follows a relation similar to that between the black hole mass and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion found for local galaxies. The luminosity of the [Ne V] and the [O IV] lines in these sources is correlated with that of the optical 5100A continuum and with the black hole mass. Our results provide a means to derive black hole properties in various types of active galactic nuclei, including highly obscured systems.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

    RAID-2: Design and implementation of a large scale disk array controller

    We describe the implementation of a large scale disk array controller and subsystem incorporating over 100 high performance 3.5 inch disk drives. It is designed to provide 40 MB/s sustained performance and 40 GB capacity in three 19 inch racks. The array controller forms an integral part of a file server that attaches to a Gb/s local area network. The controller implements a high bandwidth interconnect between an interleaved memory, an XOR calculation engine, the network interface (HIPPI), and the disk interfaces (SCSI). The system is now functionally operational, and we are tuning its performance. We review the design decisions, history, and lessons learned from this three year university implementation effort to construct a truly large scale system assembly

    Switching Intentions of Service Providers and Cultural Orientation

    This study performs a cross-cultural comparison to understand how the drivers of switching intentions differ between countries that vary in their long-term orientation (LTO). The authors hypothesize how LTO moderates the influence of the drivers of switching intentions for a mobile phone subscription service. Structural invariance tests between consumer samples of the United States (low LTO) and the Netherlands (high LTO) reveal that, consumers from high LTO nation attribute more importance to relational quality but care less about service recovery in their formation of switching intentions. The theoretical and managerial implications of how differences in time orientation affect the pathways to loyalty are discussed

    Spin and orbital frustration in MnSc_2S_4 and FeSc_2S_4

    Crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat were measured in the normal cubic spinel compounds MnSc_2S_4 and FeSc_2S_4. Down to the lowest temperatures, both compounds remain cubic and reveal strong magnetic frustration. Specifically the Fe compound is characterized by a Curie-Weiss temperature \Theta_{CW}= -45 K and does not show any indications of order down to 50 mK. In addition, the Jahn-Teller ion Fe^{2+} is orbitally frustrated. Hence, FeSc_2S_4 belongs to the rare class of spin-orbital liquids. MnSc_2S_4 is a spin liquid for temperatures T > T_N \approx 2 K.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in Physical Review Letter

    Synchrotron x-ray study of lattice vibrations in CdCr2O4

    Using inelastic x-ray scattering we have investigated lattice vibrations in a geometric frustrated system CdCr2O4 that upon cooling undergoes a spin-Peierls phase transition at TN = 7.8 K from a cubic and paramagnetic to a tetragonal and Neel state. Phonon modes measured around Brillouin zone boundaries show energy shifts when the transition occurs. Our analysis shows that the shifting can be understood as the ordinary effects of the lowering of the crystal symmetry
