Second harmonic generation in SiC polytypes
LMTO calculations are presented for the frequency dependent second harmonic
generation (SHG) in the polytypes 2H, 4H, 6H, 15R and 3C of SiC. All
independent tensor components are calculated. The spectral features and the
ratios of the 333 to 311 tensorial components are studied as a function of the
degree of hexagonality. The relationship to the linear optical response and the
underlying band structure are investigated. SHG is suggested to be a sensitive
tool for investigating the near band edge interband excitations.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
National Geodetic Satellite Program, Part II: Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory
A sequence of advances in the determination of geodetic parameters presented by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory are described. A Baker-Nunn photographic system was used in addition to a ruby-laser ranging system to obtain data for refinement of geodetic parameters. A summary of the data employed to: (1) derive coordinates for the locations of various tracking stations; and (2) determine the gravitational potential of the earth, is presented

Impact of WRF Physics and Grid Resolution on Low-level Wind Prediction: Towards the Assessment of Climate Change Impact on Future Wind Power
The Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model is used in short-range simulations to explore the sensitivity of model physics and horizontal grid resolution. We choose five events with the clear-sky conditions to study the impact of different planetary boundary layer (PBL), surface and soil-layer physics on low-level wind forecast for two wind farms; one in California (CA) and the other in Texas (TX). Short-range simulations are validated with field measurements. Results indicate that the forecast error of the CA case decreases with increasing grid resolution due to the improved representation of valley winds. Besides, the model physics configuration has a significant impact on the forecast error at this location. In contrast, the forecast error of the TX case exhibits little dependence on grid resolution and is relatively independent of physics configuration. Therefore, the occurrence frequency of lowest root mean square errors (RMSEs) at this location is used to determine an optimal model configuration for subsequent decade-scale regional climate model (RCM) simulations. In this study, we perform two sets of 20-year RCM simulations using the data from the NCAR Global Climate Model (GCM) simulations; one set models the present climate and the other simulates the future climate. These RCM simulations will be used to assess the impact of climate change on future wind energy
Leading Order Temporal Asymptotics of the Modified Non-Linear Schrodinger Equation: Solitonless Sector
Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorisation approach for non-linear
evolution equations (NLEEs) integrable in the sense of the inverse scattering
method, we obtain, in the solitonless sector, the leading-order asymptotics as
tends to plus and minus infinity of the solution to the Cauchy
initial-value problem for the modified non-linear Schrodinger equation: also
obtained are analogous results for two gauge-equivalent NLEEs; in particular,
the derivative non-linear Schrodinger equation.Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX, revised version of the original

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Circulation in Short Cylinders
In preparation for an experimental study of magnetorotational instability
(MRI) in liquid metal, we explore Couette flows having height comparable to the
gap between cylinders, centrifugally stable rotation, and high Reynolds number.
Experiments in water are compared with numerical simulations. Simulations show
that endcaps corotating with the outer cylinder drive a strong poloidal
circulation that redistributes angular momentum. Predicted azimuthal flow
profiles agree well with experimental measurements. Spin-down times scale with
Reynolds number as expected for laminar Ekman circulation; extrapolation from
two-dimensional simulations at agrees remarkably well with
experiment at . This suggests that turbulence does not dominate
the effective viscosity. Further detailed numerical studies reveal a strong
radially inward flow near both endcaps. After turning vertically along the
inner cylinder, these flows converge at the midplane and depart the boundary in
a radial jet. To minimize this circulation in the MRI experiment, endcaps
consisting of multiple, differentially rotating rings are proposed. Simulations
predict that an adequate approximation to the ideal Couette profile can be
obtained with a few rings
Marital status distribution of the U.K. military: Does it differ from the general population?
UK media suggest UK military personnel have high divorce rates; to date, these claims are not substantiated. Marital status distribution of the general population and military were compared using data from the Office for National Statistics marital projections (2008) and a military cohort study (2007 – 2009), respectively. Data from the military cohort study was collected via questionnaire with a response rate of 56% for the overall cohort questionnaire and 99.5% for the martial status question. Overall, military personnel (59.4%) were more likely to be married than the general population (49.3%) and less likely to be divorced (3.7%) than the general population (10.0%). Military females and military personnel married under 30 years of age are more likely to report divorce. Military welfare services might target these groups with programs assisting marital relationships
Defining and measuring displacement: is relocation from restructured neighbourhoods always unwelcome and disruptive?
Current regeneration policy has been described as ‘state-led gentrification’, with comparisons made with the ‘social disruption’ caused by slum clearance of the 1950s and 1960s. This article takes issue with this approach in relation to the study of the restructuring of social housing areas. The terms ‘forced relocation’ and ‘displacement’ are often too crude to describe what actually happens within processes of restructuring and the effects upon residents. Displacement in particular has important dimensions other than the physical one of moving. Evidence from a recent study of people who have moved out of restructured areas shows that although there is some evidence of physical displacement, there is little evidence of social or psychosocial displacement after relocation. Prior attitudes to moving and aspects of the process of relocation—the degree of choice and distance involved—are important moderators of the outcomes. Issues of time and context are insufficiently taken into consideration in studies and accounts of restructuring, relocation and displacement
The analysis of 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid in the plasma of smokers and non-smokers
ATCA (2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid) is a promising marker to assess cyanide exposure because of several advantages of ATCA analysis over direct determination of cyanide and alternative cyanide biomarkers (i.e. stability in biological matrices, consistent recovery, and relatively small endogenous concentrations). Concentrations of ATCA in the plasma of smoking and non-smoking human volunteers were analyzed using gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry to establish the feasibility of using ATCA as a marker for cyanide exposure. The levels of ATCA in plasma of smoking volunteers, 17.2 ng/ml, were found to be significantly (p < 0.001) higher than that of non-smoking volunteers, 11.8 ng/ml. Comparison of ATCA concentrations of smokers relative to non-smokers in both urine and plasma yielded relatively similar results. The concentration ratio of ATCA for smokers versus non-smokers in plasma and urine was compared to similar literature studies of cyanide and thiocyanate, and correlations are discussed. This study supports previous evidence that ATCA can be used to determine past cyanide exposure and indicates that further studies should be pursued to validate the use of ATCA as a marker of cyanide exposure
