Penalized estimation in large-scale generalized linear array models

Large-scale generalized linear array models (GLAMs) can be challenging to fit. Computation and storage of its tensor product design matrix can be impossible due to time and memory constraints, and previously considered design matrix free algorithms do not scale well with the dimension of the parameter vector. A new design matrix free algorithm is proposed for computing the penalized maximum likelihood estimate for GLAMs, which, in particular, handles nondifferentiable penalty functions. The proposed algorithm is implemented and available via the R package \verb+glamlasso+. It combines several ideas -- previously considered separately -- to obtain sparse estimates while at the same time efficiently exploiting the GLAM structure. The Mutant Problem: X-Men, Confirmation Bias, and the Methodology of Comics and Identity

This article suggests that scholarship on comics and identity is vulnerable to strong confirmation bias. Engaging with a few common assumptions presented in writing on X-Men comics(1963–1970, 1975–1991) and identity, it offers alternative interpretations on the series’ engagement with the Cold War, civil rights, individual authenticity, persecution, and the Holocaust. Based on these discussions, the article then offers a few methodological suggestions that might help reduce bias in future studies of comics and identity

A case study evaluating export of environmentalfriendly products into Norway

The market for environmental friendly products in Norway is increasing. New research and increased focus on environmental effects are among the largest drivers of demand. Customers who are concerned about environmental effects are willing to pay premium prices on products proven to have better environmental quality. However, exporting environmental friendly products from California to Norway can be demanding.
