Comparison of LOQC C-sign gates with ancilla inefficiency and an improvement to functionality under these conditions
We compare three proposals for non-deterministic C-sign gates implemented
using linear optics and conditional measurements with non-ideal ancilla mode
production and detection. The simplified KLM gate [Ralph et al, Phys.Rev.A {\bf
65}, 012314 (2001)] appears to be the most resilient under these conditions. We
also find that the operation of this gate can be improved by adjusting the
beamsplitter ratios to compensate to some extent for the effects of the
imperfect ancilla.Comment: to appear in PR

Momentum transfer at the high-latitude magnetopause and boundary layers
How and where momentum is transferred from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and ionosphere is one of the key problems of space physics. Much of this transfer occurs through direct reconnection on the dayside, particularly when the IMF is southward. However, momentum transfer also occurs at higher latitudes via Alfvén waves on old open field lines, even for southward IMF. This momentum is transferred to the ionosphere via field-aligned currents (FACs), and the flow channel associated with these FACs produces a Hall current which causes magnetic variations at high latitude (the Svalgaard-Mansurov effect). We show examples where such momentum transfer is observed with multiple spacecraft and ground-based instruments
Blimp-1-dependent and -independent natural antibody production by B-1 and B-1-derived plasma cells.
Natural antibodies contribute to tissue homeostasis and protect against infections. They are secreted constitutively without external antigenic stimulation. The differentiation state and regulatory pathways that enable continuous natural antibody production by B-1 cells, the main cellular source in mice, remain incompletely understood. Here we demonstrate that natural IgM-secreting B-1 cells in the spleen and bone marrow are heterogeneous, consisting of (a) terminally differentiated B-1-derived plasma cells expressing the transcriptional regulator of differentiation, Blimp-1, (b) Blimp-1+, and (c) Blimp-1neg phenotypic B-1 cells. Blimp-1neg IgM-secreting B-1 cells are not simply intermediates of cellular differentiation. Instead, they secrete similar amounts of IgM in wild-type and Blimp-1-deficient (PRDM-1ΔEx1A) mice. Blimp-1neg B-1 cells are also a major source of IgG3. Consequently, deletion of Blimp-1 changes neither serum IgG3 levels nor the amount of IgG3 secreted per cell. Thus, the pool of natural antibody-secreting B-1 cells is heterogeneous and contains a distinct subset of cells that do not use Blimp-1 for initiation or maximal antibody secretion
Elastic forces that do no work and the dynamics of fast cracks
Elastic singularities such as crack tips, when in motion through a medium
that is itself vibrating, are subject to forces orthogonal to the direction of
motion and thus impossible to determine by energy considerations alone. This
fact is used to propose a universal scenario, in which three dimensionality is
essential, for the dynamic instability of fast cracks in thin brittle
materials.Comment: 8 pages Latex, 1 Postscript figur
Atmospheric extinction coefficients in the band for several major international observatories: Results from the BiSON telescopes, 1984 to 2016
Over 30 years of solar data have been acquired by the Birmingham Solar
Oscillations Network (BiSON), an international network of telescopes used to
study oscillations of the Sun. Five of the six BiSON telescopes are located at
major observatories. The observational sites are, in order of increasing
longitude: Mount Wilson (Hale) Observatory (MWO), California, USA; Las Campanas
Observatory (LCO), Chile; Observatorio del Teide, Iza\~{n}a, Tenerife, Canary
Islands; the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO), Sutherland, South
Africa; Carnarvon, Western Australia; and the Paul Wild Observatory, Narrabri,
New South Wales, Australia. The BiSON data may be used to measure atmospheric
extinction coefficients in the band (approximately 700-900 nm),
and presented here are the derived atmospheric extinction coefficients from
each site over the years 1984 to 2016.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Accepted by Astronomical Journal:

Elevated cerebral spinal fluid biomarkers in children with mucopolysaccharidosis I-H.
Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type-IH is a lysosomal storage disease that results from mutations in the IDUA gene causing the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Historically, children with the severe phenotype, MPS-IH (Hurler syndrome) develop progressive neurodegeneration with death in the first decade due to cardio-pulmonary complications. New data suggest that inflammation may play a role in MPS pathophysiology. To date there is almost no information on the pathophysiologic changes within the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of these patients. We evaluated the CSF of 25 consecutive patients with MPS-IH. While CSF glucose and total protein were within the normal range, we found a significantly mean elevated CSF opening pressure at 24 cm H2O (range 14-37 cm H2O). We observed a 3-fold elevation in CSF heparan sulfate and a 3-8 fold increase in MPS-IH specific non-reducing ends, I0S0 and I0S6. Cytokine analyses in CSF of children with MPS-IH showed significantly elevated inflammatory markers including: MCP-1 SDF-1a, IL-Ra, MIP-1b, IL-8, and VEGF in comparison to unaffected children. This is the largest report of CSF characteristics in children with MPS-IH. Identification of key biomarkers may provide further insight into the inflammatory-mediated mechanisms related to MPS diseases and perhaps lead to improved targeted therapies
Non-deterministic Gates for Photonic Single Rail Quantum Logic
We discuss techniques for producing, manipulating and measureing qubits
encoded optically as vacuum and single photon states. We show that a universal
set of non-deterministic gates can be constructed using linear optics and
photon counting. We investigate the efficacy of a test gate given realistic
detector efficiencies.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Scattering of first and second sound waves by quantum vorticity in superfluid Helium
We study the scattering of first and second sound waves by quantum vorticity
in superfluid Helium using two-fluid hydrodynamics. The vorticity of the
superfluid component and the sound interact because of the nonlinear character
of these equations. Explicit expressions for the scattered pressure and
temperature are worked out in a first Born approximation, and care is exercised
in delimiting the range of validity of the assumptions needed for this
approximation to hold. An incident second sound wave will partly convert into
first sound, and an incident first sound wave will partly convert into second
sound. General considerations show that most incident first sound converts into
second sound, but not the other way around. These considerations are validated
using a vortex dipole as an explicitely worked out example.Comment: 24 pages, Latex, to appear in Journal of Low Temperature Physic
